The maintenance of a car relatively increases during winters, especially if you are living in an area which experiences heavy snowfall. There are a few things that should be kept in mind to make sure that you do not find yourself in trouble when the snow hits your area hard.
Generally, the best idea is to get your car checked and serviced by a mechanic well in advance before snowfall begins, but if you like to get things done the old-fashioned way, these tips will definitely come handy to you.
Tires
Having a set of tires that are in good condition under your car is a must. In the conditions of heavy snow, the tires are likely to give-up at some point, and therefore it is advised to carry a new set of snow tires that provide better traction during the season.
If you already have snow tires, check if they have treads that are deep enough (usually 4/32”) and get them replaced if they are not. Maintaining the correct tire pressure is also important as the tire pressure decreases when it gets cold.
Top Up The Antifreeze
Make sure that there is enough antifreeze fluid in your radiator so that your engine remains protected during winters, and see that the mixture of antifreeze and water is close to 50/50.
Check Your Wipers
Make sure your wiper blades are in good condition so that you have a clear visibility through windshield, especially when you drive through snowfall and muddy roads.
Windshield Washer Fluid
Generally, washer fluids freeze when it gets too cold. Notably, it is required the most while driving on snowy roads as the dirt from the tires of other vehicles, running in front, falls directly on your windshield. The nozzles of the washer system must be also cleaned using a pin, in case they are blocked.
Brakes
Brakes are the only things that will help you in stopping your car, so do take a notice of them. Along with, top-up the brake fluid and inspect the brake calipers to ensure safety.
Lights
You must have all the exterior lights of your car working properly, which includes headlamps, tail lamps, fog lamps and the indicators.
Wash Your Car
The salt from the road's snow tends to damage the body paint of your car. Regular washing and polishing the car will ensure that there is no occurrence of rust on your car’s body.
Battery and Spark Plug
Check if your battery is charged and clean the spark plug so that you don’t face any kind of ignition problems.
