Hi,
The torque developed by Diesel Engines are much better than petrol versions of similar power.This is one of the reasons why its much used in commercial vehicles.

High Torque means initial low pick-up but heavy load whereas low torque is accelleration high with immediate pick-up but not much heavy load to carry

TORQUE is the TWISTING POWER of the SHAFT.
Swift Maruti Petrol Engine has Torque of 113 NM at 4500 rpm whereas the FIAT diesel engine given to Maruti has 190 NM at 2000 RPM.
Whatever is the shortfall for its functioning of the car is suitably taken care of by the Gearbox ratios and the Final drive ratios. Even for the layman, gear changing is a bit easy and less tedious in case of diesel engine as it has a higher lugging capacity and it TWISTS at LOWER RPM than the Petrol engine.
As a common man, you need not worry as the Designers will take care of that,but you have to pay a LAKH of rupees extra for Diesel engine Swift and maintenance after a year, will be costlier than Petrol as the parts and labour is costly .

put it this way.. petrol for power and diesel for torque...
good torque with diesel engine is btr for it gives btr mileage, good accn in 40-70 kmph range compensating acceleration and sound.

Toque indicates power produced by engine at certain revolutions per second.Revolutions per second depend on dia of shaft.Torque is a physical quantity like force and power.SO torque produced will vary from engine to engine.But If a diesel engine and a petrol engine produce same torque at certain RPM ,both engines are producing same power that is called Break Horse Power.So we can not say which torque is better.
