If your main consideration is low maintenance costs and good mileage, you should go for a Maruti model. They are time tested engines and very low in maintenance. Hyundai cars are equally competent, however, they are on the higher side when you consider maintenance and spare parts cost.

If willing for New car then Hyundai i10 will be a good option.If going for used car you can buy a Maruti Swift.

I think you should have a look at the Ritz...newly launched by Maruti. Although the i10 fits your requirements well, the Ritz offers you more features at almost the same price. Maruti after sales service is extensive and widespread.

Any Day Maruti cars for known better for service (But I own a Zen,where I am not happy with Service).JDPowers usually gives the Best rating but all this is bunkum.They may have a dealer at all points,if you consider the term Service,but I consider Service more than that which I am not at all happy.They do not hear to our complaint(as still my noise complaint is there now almost Nine years).Further Mileage and Power are opposite,and low maintenance and Bad roads operation are opposites.I am unable to combine both. It is better you read what others has to say.It all depends upon the area where you want to operate and ask the users of some Maruti and Hyundai owners. They will be a better judge than me or others who give some ideas for time pass.

Keeping your considerations of low maintenance cost etc. you should buy a Wagon R. Since you are willing to spend 4.25 lacs you would comfortably get a new Wagon R. If you are a first time car buyer, then I would suggest that you buy a pre-owned Wagon R in good condition.

regarding which car to pick- u can go for A-star- wagonr- zen estilo- swift petrol- and NEwly launched Ritz petrol. all the cars are great in mileage and performance. from my view u shuld go for the ritz.

HYUNDAI i10 is ever best than any other cars ...maruti swift will not give you pleasure on bad roads.

Buy Maruti Swift DIESEL. The mileage is always above 15km in the city and above 20 on highways. The maintenance is much like the petrol cars. However, you may have to shell out a lakh more in case you are looking for a new Swift.
And yes, if you can go ahead with a used car, be very very cautious as more than 90% of Swift cars are accidented, and most times the seller will hide this info. They are repainted and made to look scratch-free, but most of them are repaired.
Besides, for the road contitions in India, and the expertise of mechanics, Maruti is the safest option (though you may compromise on quality of interiors used in foriegn cars).
