I have a Tata Indica '02 LXi petrol.
The mileage is not that great, is low mileage a known issue with Tata petrol cars or is there some thing that I can do (I am a pretty decent driver and utilise all known driving skills to obtain max. mileage) to get decent milege. I am currently getting 7 kmpl or lesser with AC in city.

Hello Amol,
Tata Indica petrol & diesel version both share the same engine block, diesel block being heavier, the petrol engine hence is known to give lesser mileage. 8-10 kms in city is the usual norm for the petrol engine in the older versions. I donot think you can do much on the mileage factor, except go for regular maintenance as per OEM suggestions.

I am currently driving INDICA DLS - DIESEL so i really don't have any idea about petrol indica. As far as my car is concerned even after 5 years, running more thsn 1 lac km, it is still giving me an average of 14 to 15. I found it quite economical and no issues regarding mileage.

thanx

Dear Amol, I think MPFI engine injector needs to be replaced or cleaned. Go to good workshop and ask for cleaning or replacing.
thanks

Dear Amol
YOU DID A MISTAKE WHILE CHOOSING THE CAR, PETROL INDICA IS BIG FAILURE OF TATA MOTORS IN INDIA.
THE COMPANY HAD PUT PRESSURE ON DEALERS TO SELL THE CARS.
INDICA DISEL VARIANT IS VERY GOOD AND GIVING AND MILEAGE AROUND 20KMS/IN AC IN CITY AND ABOUT 22 IN NON AC.
NOT ONLY THAT ON HIGHWAY IT GIVE 22 IN AC AND AROUND 26 IN NON AC.
I AM HAVING 2001 V2 MODEL, AFTER DOING SMALL MODIFICATION.
I HAVE PUT FCI UNIT OF PADMINI MAKE FROM TATA MOTORS WHICH COST ME AROUND RS.2000/- AND MY INDICA BECOME LIKE TURBO.
YA IT WORKS WHEN WE START AC IT AUTOMATICALLY INCREASES THE RPM OF ENGINE SO THAT PICKUP WILL REMAIN CONSTANT. ESPECIALLY IN CITY.

SO I WANT TO SUGGEST YOU BETTER SELL OF PETROL VARIANT AND GO FOR DISEL ONE. WHICH IS ONLY REMEDY FOR YOUR PROBLEM.

Diesels of Tata are great in Fuel efficiency, However petrols are just opposite.
I have a diesel travel 50% city and 50% outskirts. Returns 17 kmpl with a/c. No complaints on fuel economy...

If it is Indica 1.2 petrol it must give return a mileage of minimum 10 KMPL with AC in city condition and 15 KMPL on highways. I dont have much idea about 1.4 petrol(Earlier versions). So you need to get it completely checked at workshop to get the mileage improved.

Hi,
Please get decarbonising done for cylinder head if it was not done earlier.Check oil level using the gauge provided for the same .If oil level is greater than the normal level and if there is content of petrol in that then it certainly indicates fuel pump leakage.

Normally petrol indica 1400cc give avg. 10-12 KMPL.
Please check your Breaks. If breaks are not released properly then vhehicle will consume more fuel. Check Front Disk brak calipper. Or lift car on jack and rotate your wheel by hand it should rotate freely. if wheel is jam then there is problem in breaks or Bearings.
to get good Avg whehicle should be light Weight & Wheels should be free rotating.
Do not convert your car on GAS.

TATA did try to sell their petrol version to me.I settled for PalioELX which is a good car and gives 10km in city and 14 in highway(petrol).I would suggest the following
1.Switch off a/c unless it is very hot.A/C gobbles up fuel like anything
2.Try using premium fuel like Speed or Extrapremium.
3.Shift to higher gear as soon as possible.Never mind a little underevving.
4.Use gear-brake(shifting down to decelerate) often rather than brakes

Dear Amol,
You got a gas guzzler in your garage buddy, the sooner you sell it of is better. Old Indica petrol models are the worst car tata has ever made, ( indica cars are in general made for taxi operators, which I realized after buying my Turbo diesel)
Any way, the forum gave you very good tips, primarily regular cleaning of fule injection system ( try the 3M system clean service in your workshop), usage of fuel additive; ( not the stupid extra premium petrol)you can try Bardhal, Wurth or 3M and checking the spark plag for defect, these will increease your milage to some extent. I have my own theory of driving with AC, which you may try out; keep the thermostat at mximum cooling and mannually switch off Ac as soon as you feel cold inside. Also switch off when you accelerate from stand still to 1st gear or from 2nd to 3rd gear. This mannual operation, though irritating has proven successful in increasing my car's milage upto 18 kpl in Delhi with AC. Also always switch of engine at 30sec+ stoppages. You can also try the desi method of driving with 32 psi or more tyre pressure, but I am not sure if it really imrpves milage.
Please let us know whatever you tried and whats are the result.
Happy driving
Sharbendu

Hi Amol,
There are many people who as said correctly that the Petrol version of Indica is the biggest failure. There is nothin much u can do about it but to get the MPFI checked, Tyres Pressure checked regularly, Swicth off the AC in the lower gear (esp 1 & 2) etc...
U have to live with it if u continue with Indica.....another advice if its really killing your pockets .....scrap it out....

I am also using a TATA Indica for the past 6 years and it has never worked more than 8km/lit of Petrol. I was convinced by the TATA dealer that it normally works more than 10 km and low performance is something to do with my driving! I was foolish enough not to check blogs. Now I realize that this model is a failure. Can I even sell this for a reasonable sum?
