Hello,

I am in a big dilema as to go for which Car. Since this will be my first Car , so I have no previous experiences which casn help me take a better decision. Firstly , the big Question is whether to go fo Petrol or a Diesel Car. Currently I stay very near to my office so my running is not that much. It will be arrpox 15 km per daty. So generally people recommend to go for Petrol car since its better and Long lasting, less maintenance. But what if tomorrow my running gets more and obviously Petrol prices are going to increase on with time. There is a difference of 16 RS right now. But Diesel gives more mileage. and Expensice by an LAkH atleast. I am confused. I like Swift and i20 both. But i20 Diesel is very expensive since I do not want a low variant. My Budget is around 7Lakh for Diesel. Please help me select a car and also choose wisely between Petrol & Diesel , since I dont want to repent later on.

as first time user must go for less expensive car so as to have good feeling of driving.go for petro as use is less and can switch to diesel by disposing this and going for diesel version when likely to have more mileage perday..status in society also matters that u have to decide.parking space at home and in outside getting problematic..diesel also going up per month.subsidy will go for cars when election fear goes off

Since I am having a car (Petrol) I personally feel that petrol car is better than diesel. No doubt the diesel is cheaper than petrol but the maintenance is much more as compared to the petrol car. I would like to advise you to go in for petrol car and use your car only when it is must and just do not burn your money while driving aimlessly. Moreover, the initial investment for purchase of diesel car is much morethan the petrol car. Act wisely. regards.

Go far petrol car and then you have option for converting to CNG when petrol prices go up or go far CNg car right now. CNG cars are little expensive but factory fitted CNG cars come with warranty and lower RTO taxes. Cheapest and highest milage CNG car is alto 800. Maruti Ertiga CNG and SX4 are also close to your budget.

Hi Tripti,

Firstly you need to decide whether you want a Hatch Back that's got Oomph value or you want just a decent Car to commute day to day.

If you want Luxury & Oomph value in the Entry Segment i.e Hatch back, then there's no car that comes even close to the i20 Asta variant, right from the fancy gadgets to the ride comfort this is the car to go for.

However if functionality is your 1st priority, and a fairly nice sporty looks as well, then the Swift "Z" variant is definitely your choice.

Do remember the difference between the two i.e. i20 & Swift both in their Top variant will be well over a lakh. So that's your 1st decision.

Coming to a choice of Petrol over Diesel, - There's no disputing that although the Diesel variant of any car is almost a Lakh more than the same in it's Petrol avtar, The Diesel will never leave you dissatisfied. Reasons:
1. When you go to sell a Petrol Car, you literally have to beg to get the car sold. Which means that unless your looking at using the car for a minimum of 5 - 7 years, you can be rest assured that you will get little or nothing for your Petrol variant when the time comes to sell or upgrade.

2. Assuming the difference in price between Petrol & Diesel no longer exists, i.e. diesel subsidy is withdrawn altogether, you will still benefit on the mileage, as again the difference between a Petrol & a Diesel car of the similar make & variant, is a minimum of 3-4 kms/liter in favour of the Diesel variant.

And Finally Everyone has a common misconception that the maintenance of a Diesel is more expensive - Analyze this for your self based on a Normal Periodic Servicing:
1. Oil Change Intervals - Common for both Petrol & Diesel Cars (No Benefit)
2. Oil & Air Filter Change - Common for both Petrol & Diesel Cars (No Benefit)
3. Vehicle Hygiene & Washing - Common for both Petrol & Diesel Cars (No Benefit)
4. Spark Plug Change - Only in Petrol Cars, Diesel Cars have No Spark Plugs (Benefit Diesel)
5. Oil Quantity at Time of Oil Change - (about 1 Ltr extra in case of a Diesel Car (Benefit Petrol)
6. Fuel Efficiency either real or recommended - Between 3 - 4 Kms / Ltr better in a Diesel
7. Re-Sale between Petrol & Diesel - No comparison as Diesel's are in way more demand.
8. Life expectancy - At 100,000 Kms a Petrol is over 75% life expectancy while a Diesel is a paltry 35% (Reason it's a far stronger & sturdier engine)
9. Comfort - Gone are the days of Shake Rattle & Roll Diesels, today's decibel difference between Petrol & Diesel's are almost negligible.

So If I were in your Shoes with a Budget of 7 Lakhs - I'd ideally look at any one of these 3 options in order of priority and of course budget:

1. i20 Sportz Diesel - Very Chic Car Excellent Ride & the Most Powerful of the 3
2. Swift ZDI Diesel - An allaround great Car, fuel figures marginally better than the i20
3. Tata Indigo eCS VXI (The Recently launched version) - Best Mileage, More Space & Best Warranty. Draw backs the Brand Value, Fit & Finish & not the best electrical's compensated by the 4 year peace of mind warranty. - But you have to be Strong with the Dealers or write in to Tata's directly.

Hope the above information was useful,

Happy Motoring

Hello Francis,

Your Answer was the best amongst all posted here . Your viwes were not biased. And I must say I am quite impressed with your feedback. I keep on discussing with my Colleagues regarding Petrol vs Diesel. They all say Petrol but I dont agree with all of them. They say that Diesel is expensive , more maintenance etc. So it Petrol it all depends how you handle the Car. I like i20 but its too expensive. And Mileage will be less . No doubt i20 is class apart. But I like Swift also since I want a low maintenance and more mileage. I was thining of Swift VDI since it meets all my requirementsd except for it doesnt have rare wiper which I wanted but thats the only thing I wanted from the ZDI option. ABS is not a mandate for city drive and Air Bags also not mandate since you really need more than 130 -140 speed to get those airbags out.

Lets see , I am still in the planning phase .

Thanks a lot guys for your valuable feedback.
