Is buying a Used Safari Dicor Worth it. Please Help!!!!!!!!!!!

I am interested in purchasing an SUV and am currently thinking of purchasing a 2nd hand tata safari dicor, i have been under the impression and lotsa guys have told me not to pick up a 2nd hand diesel engine, so im a bit lost but want to buy another car. I currently own a Santro Xing 2008 model and have driven 11000 kms on it and also own a Mahindra MM 540 jeep 93 model completely redone and before that i used to own an Esteem. We are a family of four but when i count my extended family, it is quite big as i drive them around. I have a few reasons for buying another vehicle and need your advice on the same. They are

1. Looking for a diesel engine as petrol prices are too high.
2. Want something that stands out and makes a presence felt, i would love to own a Skoda Laura or a Cruze but its out of my budget.
3. Would also love a Pajero or something, but again price point comes into picture
4. Want something spacious and make me feel good like owning a beast as i currently have one jeep.
5. Dont want any other small car as its not me because my earlier one was a compromise.

My typical driving is around 35-40 kms per day (going to office n back). And sometimes travel to locations such as Goa, Konkan side and Borivilli as i have relatives there and also travel. Besides this over the weekend, its mahabaleshwar and lonavala the usual, but for city driving i would like to still use to santro and not give it up and use that as well. I want something BIG as i really love to own such vehicles. Also another reason for a second hand car, is that i live in an old building and would have to PARK the vehicle outside the building, so don't want to buy a new one for sure till i don't move and own a new place to stay which will be for a good number of years.

Now coming to the main question, i saw this AD on ( and as you can see the dealer is asking for a price of 7,45,000. So i would like to get some advice from you guys.

1. Is this Dicor worth the price?
2. Should i go in for this or what other car would you recommend best to me?
3. How do i check for the condition of this vehicle
4. What tests should i do before buying it?
5. What would be the best price that i should quote to the dealer.
6. Also if I want to get the vehicle checked in Pune, to whom should i take it for giving it a complete over view. I per say dont have my own mechanic for 4 wheels.
7. Will that dealer mind that i am getting is checked from someone else. Also is this right,

I have seen the Dicor from outside and it looks really nice and in decent condition, i havent gone behind the wheel yet and need to take it for a spin and checked.

hello amitabh,
yes it is somewhat correct that used diesel cars should be avoided until you have proper faith about its maintenance done.
this price on the ad seems to be okay.
like our expert told, it is better to take a reliable mechanic or even if you can ask any tata engineer(assisting personally) to check the car as paying 7.5lakh is huge amount.
however it is better to buy a new diesel only.
don't expect safari to be economical to run and maintain.
however this new 2.2vtt engine is far better than 3.0l

you may pursue with the deal and also find any in local classifieds.
