There have been absolutely contradictory reviews about the mileage of the Tata Nano on portals . While some Nano owners have written that they are getting an excellent mileage of 21 Km per litre in City Traffic with the AC on there are other Nano owners who have written that they are getting only 10 Km per litre or even lesser in City Traffic with the AC on.
How can there be such a wide variation of over 50% in fuel average whatever the driving conditions or driving skills may be ?
I am a Nano LX owner and my Nano is consistently giving just 10.5 Km per litre for the past nine months having covered 4000 Kms. I have carefully tested my Nano for the last six months running 2500 Kms and have with me irrefutable data to prove that my Nano is consistently giving a mileage of only 10.5 Km per litre in City Traffic. I have passed on this data to Tata Motors.
Mr. R Gopala Krishnan - Senior Manager - Customer Support, Tata Motors Chennai has driven my Nano along with a two member Plant Testing Team for three days and has orally confirmed that my Nano gives only 10.5 Kms in City Traffic. He has also confirmed that my Nano also gave him a mileage of 23 Km per litre when he tested it on the Highway which is a blatant lie because I have tested my Nano on the Highway with a diagnostics laptop attached and the mileage recorded was only 18 Km per litre.
From what I have gathered in the last six months speaking to several Nano owners in Chennai and Kolkatta is that most of the Nano's are giving 16 to 18 + Kms per litre in City Traffic with the AC on and the mileage apparently goes as high as 21 Km per litre in City Traffic with the AC on which is really fantastic.
At the same time, there are a handful of unfortunate defective Nano owners like me who are consistently getting just 10 to 11 Km per litre in City Traffic with the AC on.
This kind of variation is absurd and what is even more absurd is the statement of Mr. V. Ramesh Kumar (another Senior Manager with Tata Motors, Chennai) wherein he has confirmed in writing that "Your car is absolutely trouble free and the fuel average you got in such conditions is very appreciable". Absolute nonsense and pasteurised bullshit.
I am still waiting for Tata Motors to break their silence and come forward to do whatever needs to be done so that I also get a mile of 16 to 18 Km per litre.

Dear Prabhakar
Very comprehensive testing and report.
I am sure this is the case with almost all vehicles, but as you said it may be because of the different style of driving.
Since your case is different some good engineer from Tata should get back to you on this, otherwise you need to take another Nano and drive the you do, prepare the test reports and then you will have a solid evidence on what you said.
I was looking for owning a Nano, for my city use

Dear Mr Prabhakar,

Could you share with me how you have calculated the fuel efficiency. Iam a mecahnical engineer myself, and beside the obvious reasons of intellect,I have a similar problem with my Alto LXI, which has done around 3800 km and is consistently given a fuel average of around 10.5km/l in city condition. As in your case, Maruti Suzuki has not been able to resolve the issue but only try to prove that this is OK and given "free" advise on how to get better mileage.
If I can get similar data, I plan to sue MSIL for this in consumer court. Hence I would be thankful for your advise.

Mr Prabhakar,
if u have such detailed reports and are such a harrassed person why dont u sue tata motors ,instead of running from pillar to post .generally there is a drop in milage in city conditions but to this extent surprising and even more surprising why u are waiting if every thing is fine on ur end.nano seems to have complete extremes reaction some customers are very happy with the performance some really troubled.

Hi,
As you have got mileage of 18KMPL with diagnostic kit attached, the mileage of 18KMPL on highway is reliable. The fact that you are getting 10.5 KMPL in city is to be considered based on traffic conditions in which you are driving like peak hour traffics etc.
It is also interesting to know the officials could not give satisfactory explanation on performance of car.

i for once would like to question your testing methodology. In the big post that you have made, there are no figures that you have mentioned other than the fuel efficiency you got. I can mention that, following the tank full to tank full method, I got 180kms out of 10.6 litres of fuel. So if you do the math, its 16.9 kms to the litre, with the AC running, and a lot of city driving.

And to note this was during the first 1000 kms running in, but i am not straining my engine by adhering strictly to the running in process. Im making sure that the engine is not stressed, even if i have to run it at a higher rpm.

With a diagnostic laptop connected? how did u get the fuel efficiency please confirm.

have you gotten any other checks done? like compression test? condition of the air filter, spark plugs?

Did you try another petrol pump? And please share data, in terms of distance covered, how much city how much highway.

Awaiting a simpler reply.

This is my response to Mr. Pradeep's post regarding my testing methodology.
I have tested the Nano initially for about 2 1/2 months continuously by filling up the tank right upto the nozzle level (approx 15.77 to 16.80 litres) and running the car till the fuel level indicator reached the 1st Bar each time. On testing it this way six times I have made an excel sheet which clearly shows that my Nano covered only around 170 Kms each time therefore clocking a average mileage of just 10.5 Kms per litre in City Traffic with the AC on. In the subsequent testing for the last 3 + months I have filled up 10 litres of petrol around 14 times and find that the car runs only 100 Kms (+ / - 5 to 10 Kms) every time therefore giving a fuel average of just 10.3 Km per litre in City Traffic with the AC on. If you can send me your mail ID to sprabhakar@vsnl.com I would be glad to send you both the excel sheets which would be quite self explanatory. I was also extremely careful during the running in period (first 1000 Kms) and did not strain the engine at all. I think most of the dealerships from where the Nano is sold will have a diagnostics laptop with them which, when connected to your Nano engine while driving, will clearly display the fuel average. Lastly, the Nano engine does not have spark plugs etc and is completely controlled by the pre programmed ECU (Electronic Control Unit). I hope I have been able to answer your queries. If you need any more information please do send me a mail on the above mail ID and I would be glad to respond.

"Lastly, the Nano engine does not have spark plugs etc and is completely controlled by the pre programmed ECU (Electronic Control Unit)" - please read up on basic engine technology, and you will understand that every petrol engine uses spark plugs to ignite the fuel. The ECU is merely a replacement to the carburettor, which controls all the functions like injection, timing, etc. The spark is still given by the spark plug.

And why not a tank ful to tank ful method. I have noticed that the fuel gauge does not remain steady towrads the end.

Why not tank up till cut off. Then drive for 100 kms, and then tank up again till cut off?? The number of kms you cover ( 100 ) divided by the number of litre of fuel taken for bringing back to full tank again??? Why not try that? rather than going by the fuel level.

and the name is jaideep... lol

I suggest follow the max speed guideline provided by tata motors. The mileage I got for city cum small long drives is around 19 kmpl. Driving at 50-60km/hr give good milage. Follow the guideline of max speeds provided i.e. 1st gear 15km/hr, 2nd gear max of 30km/hr, 3rd gear max of 40km/hr and 4th gear not more than 70km/hr.
Running on high RPM or on lower gears constantly will reduce the mileage

In the good old days we used to disconnect the fuel tank and connect a measured quantity of fuel to the Carb and drive the vehicle until it stopped,. This way both the parties were sure about the issue and there was no peanut butter or pasturised whatever. If one takes the car out in heavy traffic and stops at many halts and signals and fills poor fuel in a bad filling station all that he will have is a couple of excel sheets and a lots to write in such forum. If one is not happy with a car then surely there may be other options. Just wait for the small car to grow up.

Kudos to you Mr Prabhakar. Now in Jan 2012, my experience is exacctly the same....18 kmpl when tested by dealer, 11 kmpl actual, uncooperative attitude of dealer and Tata Motors staff. They say that i am not driving properly. Even though i was getting 17kmpl on my Maruti 800. Same driver, same roads, same traffic. What next can i do?

Sir I think the nano comes with a 15 litre tank but yes maybe a little more fuel can be coaxed into its filling nozzle neck. What i dont understand is that at 1st bar you have 2 litres fuel plus 3 litres reserve if im not mistaken when the E symbol starts to blink. so how could you have filled 15 litres + (3+2) in the tank remaining . meaning u have a 20 litre tank in all? I think the pump ppl are taking u for a ride. in town my nano gives 15kmpl with light ac and i stay in a hill station. I would recommend filling to a particular mark on the filling nozzle drive for X kms and then fill tll that level again, then calculate, also measure with a beaker the real qty of fuel going in

HOW IS AFTER SALES SERVICE?

There's nothing called "standard' with the TATAS. You got a lousy piece, period. Even bad driving would alter the mileage by a Km at the most. Nothing can be worse than Bangalore traffic and my Alto returns 16-18 KMpl each time. Get rid of it asap. Tata Engineers will never be able to set it right.

sorry to say but TATA sever persons has clear idea about there products, bcz i bought tata indica Xeta (petrol) car and it has given me 9km/lt without AC ( 1400CC one) .when asked the service person he told that ur lucky sir for others it is giving 7 Km/lt. ofter that when i have tested on peak city traffic with AC it gave me 3 Km/lt again vnt to service station he checked it all car and sensors and other electronic equipment which controls fuel (MPFI) and said every thing is good u must get 6 km/lt ,but no solution. later it has has stopped 1400cc and and they manufactured Xeta with 1200cc LPG model which is a flop model. The quality is very poor compare to Maruti but impressive design and spacious interior is the only plus point.

Dear Mr. Prabhakar,
I am an Indian and an engineer and an owner of TATA NANO LXI - 2011. I am confident to say that after covering 57000 km I get 23 to 24 km/lt with AC, car fully loaded 3 adults and one child and an additional load of 70 to 100 kg at a speed of 80 km/hr. At 70 km/hr without AC I get 28 km/hr. These data are highway. I live at mountains so I am helpless to provide any other data of city drive but my general observation says that it gives around 18 km/hr without AC.
I fully agree with your point on the funny answers of the engineers and technicians at TATA Motors.
Me too am fed up with their level of understanding and dusting their hands off by giving any any sort of mismatched justification. My support to you is as 'WHY WOULD YOU SAY 10km IF YOU ARE GETTING 18km? YOU ARE TALKING TO THEM IN TERM OF DATA.' Not TRYING to understand the concept of the query is my first point, if this point is accepted then many issues can be resolved with joint effort, rather the attitude is how to close the request ANY HOW.
ANY PLANS to chase them ahead? Being myself an higher end engineer they fear to face me as my query starts 'that if I do not have [x] problem why would I waste my time standing at the service station, there is a problem in my [x] car so I am here.., Being an Indian my wish is there that TATA Motors move toward No. 1 on the world map and full assistance is there for TATA Motors in this competitive world.

We purchased Baleno alpha petrol in March 2016, the car has run ~10,000km and has undergone the three free services. Since beginning it is giving an average of about 15km/litre.
