Upcoming Mahindra cars in India
Mahindra and Mahindra, who started their Indian operations by assembling Willys Jeeps in India has come a long way. They command unparallel success and recognition in India’s utility and sports utility vehicles. The success of Bolero which is the largest selling SUV in India has guaranteed confidence among Indian consumers for the brand. In spite of being a known name in SUV space, they have often ventured into offbeat zones like launching an electric car e2o. Their flagship products like the XUV500 and Ssangyong Rexton have done great for the brand. Carrying its legacy ahead, they have multiple plans for 2014.
Mahindra Quanto was the first sub 4m SUV by the UV maker in India. It might have not tasted success but then Mahindra is still not letting it down. They have prepared an automated manual transmission for this sub 4m SUV. It was shown at the 2014 Auto Expo and also claims to be the first compact SUV to feature a transmission like this. Clearly, its simple construction sans the presence of a torque converter will help keep the costs at a minimal best. The Quanto AMT will also feature regenerative braking which means as soon as brakes are applied the same kinetic energy will be converted into electric energy and will be used to charge batteries in the car. In terms of design, not a lot will be changed from its existing design except for the new radiator grille which has been seen on the XUV500 and 2014 Scorpio. Raised headlamps with an aggressive line flowing all the way to the hood, give it a very prominent design. The front bumper is rather simple and features minimalistic profiles on it with fog lamps. It has a wide front windshield design which gives a better view from inside. Cabin Space too will remain similar except for few tweaks which will come in the form of Instrumental panel which has a speedometer, tachometer along with the engine temperature and the trip meter. The Mahindra Quanto AMT also carries a digital drive system which seems to offer a better response than the one in Xylo as this unit is easier to handle. The small screen displays the distance to empty, average fuel consumption and the current speed followed by the outside temperature, gear engaged and time. We expect Mahindra to price the Quanto AMT at Rs.6.5 lakhs for the base variant and Rs.8 lakhs for the top end variant.
Another feather to Mahindra’s cap will be the hybrid version of their best selling XUV500 SUV. Sticking out of convention and not just giving visual and internal upgrades, Mahindra has plans to launch hybrid version of their XUV500 with technology from their electric car maker acquisition Reva. This was shown at the 2014 Auto Expo and again promised to be the first in the segment and the first hybrid SUV in the country. In terms of performance, the XUV500 will have the conventional 2.2L mHawk diesel engine but it would also have an additional electric motor which would primarily kick in during the initial performance cutting the need of a diesel engine. Mahindra has newly designed a combination of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) and lithium-ion battery that will be incorporated with the standard diesel engine of the SUV. By blending the electric motor with a conventional engine, the company claims that the new SUV will be 18 per cent more fuel economical that the normal model. The ongoing Mahindra XUV500 is equipped with a mHawk140 type, Direct Injection Diesel Engine with 5th generation Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT). The power and torque figures of the diesel engine remain same while the transmission of the XUV500 might be similar to that of the Quanto with a heavier construction. In terms of design, Mahindra won’t be fiddling with the looks of the XUV500 as it is already a well accepted SUV in the country. We expect Mahindra to price XUV500 Hybrid between Rs. 14.50 lakhs to Rs.17 lakhs.
The most important of them all would be the S101 compact SUV. It is still not clear whether the S101 will be a replacement of the Quanto or will co-exist with it. One of the strong reasons for Mahindra to be developing the S101 can be the drop in demand for the Quanto SUV. The compact SUV segment has robust offerings like the Ford Ecosport, Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano and the Mahindra Quanto looks a total misfit in this area. Neither does it have an impressive design nor engaging interiors. In terms of performance, it gets a decent engine. To eliminate all these issues and revamp its brand image in the compact SUV segment, Mahindras are developing an all new from scratch compact SUV under the project name S101. It is believed and for obvious cost reasons, the S101 will share its power train with the Quanto though with more refinement and lower NVH levels. The S101 will also be offered in petrol version which will be priced lower than its equivalent diesel versions. It is based on a platform similar to the XUV500 and its chassis will be of monocoque construction designed especially for use in compact SUVs. The overall appearance of the SUV is quite similar to that of the hatchback, while bulk has been added to the nose. Further, it has a rear mounted wheel that gives the vehicle a distinct appearance. The S101 is believed to have ample space volume for 6 passengers. We expect Mahindra to price the S101 between Rs. 5.5 lakhs to Rs.8 lakhs.
