Upcoming Hyundai cars in India
Hyundai who entered India with their small micro hatch Santro were confident that they will end the dominance of the largest car manufacturer in India. They were not aggressive initially and adopted a strategy to make sure their progress does not get highlighted. They studied the key reasons for a car manufacturer to be successful in India and accordingly devised a plan to enter India. Challenging the likes of Maruti, the Santro was a success and even though it has been long since it was launched, Hyundai continues to produce it from their Indian plants. Hyundai will be continuing its momentum in 2014 with its series of launched.
The Hyundai HND7 will be the company’s first foray in the MPV segment. As the concept name goes HND7 means an MPV that can comfortably seat 7 people. It will be a compact MPV and will challenge the existence of Honda Mobilio and Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. Hyundai has shown the concept version at the 2012 Auto Expo in Delhi and many consumers with large families had shown great interest in this MPV. The exteriors of the HND7 concept car are characterised by streamlined appearance, swept-back LED headlamps and fog lights. The modern looking rear portion of the vehicle has angular taillights that merge into the Fluidic side profile of the car. It is expected to be 4.3 metres in length, 1.82 metres in width and 1.65 metres in height. Along with these dimensions, the car will also have a wheelbase of 2.75 metres and run on 19 inch wheels.
The most striking feature of the Hyundai HND7 model is the innovative interior designing elements incorporated by the car maker. Reportedly, the final production version of the vehicle will be able to seat a total of 8 passengers comfortably through a three row seating arrangement. Despite two rows of three seats each and last row with two seats, passengers will never feel cramped in the HND7 model. We expect the HND7 to be the most modern looking MPVs in India as it will be based on the company’s popular Fluidic Philosophy 2.0 which has got a lot of updates from its previous version. The new design has already made way India with the Elite i20 and thus is obvious; it will feature on the HND7 MPV as well. Hyundai will price the HND7 MPV at par with competition between Rs.8 lakhs to Rs.10 lakhs.
Jumping in the Compact SUV rave, Hyundai is readying its compact SUV rumoured to be code named ix25 to launch the same in India. Upon its launch in the country, the ix25 will compete against the likes of Renault Duster, Ford Ecosport and Nissan Terrano. Like the MPV, this one too shall be a sub 4m compact SUV with potential to take on off-roads. It is still not sure, if Hyundai will offer it in automatic version but the possibility of offering the ix25 with a 4x4 is very strong. "From this year we have started entering segment where we are not present. We will continue to do this in the coming years to enter segments where we are not present currently," HMIL Vice President Sales and Marketing Rakesh Srivastava told PTI
It is supposed to be offered in India with 1.4 and 1.6 litre engines. Hyundai might plonk similarly constructed engines as seen on the Verna and the Elite i20 but if the same would be detuned or tweaked would be clear once it is launched. Hyundai will price the compact SUV at Rs. 8lakhs to Rs. 12 lakhs.
Santro Xing, which has already set a benchmark in budget hatchbacks is also said to receive a more efficient engine in the form of a diesel unit. The Xing might make use of an 1100cc CRDi engine. This engine will produce a maximum power output of 75 hp at 4000 rpm and has a maximum toque of 150 Nm at 1900 rpm to 2750 rpm. The Santro Xing Diesel will deliver a mileage of 23.5 Kmpl which will make it a class rival for its main competitors like the Tata Indica eV2 and Chevrolet Beat.
Hyundai will retain the design of Santro Xing since the diesel engine will make the car heavier and any new changes in the design and construction of the car will increase the costs further. Hyundai will offer airbags only on the premier versions while the lower variants will not get any. Hyundai might also equip the top end variants with ABS which will be a class leading feature at that budget.
Entry level sedans are also gaining popularity in India and Hyundai already has its Xcent sedan which is based on the Grandi10. There is also a chance of Hyundai launching the HB20S sedan in India. It will be based on the i20 and will be more premium compared to the Xcent with more features. IT will fill in the gap between Xcent and Verna and will be offered at great price. The design of the Hyundai HB20S follows the fluidic design language that is seen on all new models such as Verna, Elantra, Eon, i10 and i20. Reference to nature has been made and dynamic lines give the vehicle a modern appearance. It also has ten spoke alloy wheels which add class to the overall appearance of the car. With a steeply raked rear window, this car appears to be bigger than it actually is, presenting a Coupe like appearance. The boot of this vehicle is fairly voluminous and has a chrome strip at the bottom for a sophisticated look. Hyundai will price the HB20S at Rs.7 lakhs to Rs.11 lakhs.
