Upcoming cars of Maruti in 2013
India’s leading passenger car maker, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) is one of the few auto companies, which have profitably rolled out a number of models in the market. Although several auto makers did not witnessed not-so-good times in the Indian auto market during 2012, MSIL continues to be optimistic in 2013 with its decision to launch a CNG version of Maruti Ertiga. Experts believe that this 7-seater Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) will become a more popular model in the market than before, with the practicalities of a CNG powered engine. With a 1.4 litre K-series powertrain under its hood, there will be enough power in the upcoming CNG version even when fully laden. Auto analysts are expecting that the Ertiga CNG will be priced slightly higher to the current generation model, as nothing is confirmed by the auto maker yet on the this terms.
Along with, a decision to launch the diesel version of the Maruti WagonR has been in the pipeline for quite a while now. MSIL has been using the 1.3 litre Fiat Multijet diesel engine from sometime and it is possible that a reworked version of the same could be used in this hatchback. Current petrol price and expanding cities are showing that an increasing number of buyers are shifting towards diesel as it both cheap and offers more mileage than the petrol. To tap this section, the WagonR is anticipated to be launched at a competitive price between Rs. 4 lakhs and Rs. 5 lakhs, which will make it below the below the Swift and Ritz. Another hatchback expected to be launched this year by Maruti Suzuki is Cervo. Reportedly, it would be powered by the same KB10 1 litre engine, which has been installed in the current Alto K10, A-Star and WagonR. Industry experts are of a view that being a small car, it would be agile in handling and will be priced around Rs. 3 lakh to Rs. 4.5 lakh for the Indian auto market.
The most eagerly awaited launch for MSIL in 2013 has to be the XA Alpha Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV). This radically designed compact SUV was first showcased in the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo and would take on competition from the Renault Duster, Mahindra Quanto, Ford EcoSport and Premier Rio, among others. Interestingly, this model has been designed especially for the country’s youth. It is expected to be priced between Rs. 6 lakhs and Rs. 8 lakhs and is believed to witness Indian daylight around October this year.
Hot hatch Swift may get a Sports version this year. Its exterior design has been modified to give the vehicle a sportier look than before. Every year, the Swift continues to be the best selling hatchback in the country and then MSIL takes it a step further by making changes. It could get a 1.6 litre diesel engine, just as is available in the Volkswagen Polo and Skoda Fabia. On this launch, auto analysts believe that the Swift may be more stable with a new ground hugging avatar. Sources close to the development process said that new aerodynamic parts have been used in the designing process of Swift Sport.
As Indians have a penchant for small cars, another hatchback is expected to be launched by Maruti Suzuki, Regina. Reportedly, the model is anticipated to be slated right below the Maruti Swift at a price point of around Rs. 4 lakhs. With a single glance, one can say that the design of upcoming Regina is a mixture of modern and retro looks. Interestingly, this car was first seen at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2011 and since then no updates for the model are being revealed by the company. It remains to be seen whether Maruti would use a Fiat-sourced diesel engine in the model or a petrol motor. Maruti Regina is expected to mark its presence in the Indian auto market somewhere in September 2013, amid great buzz.
Next model in the league is facelift model of SX4. Initially, the demand for the model was great, but then figures happened to fizzle out over a period of time, losing out to its younger cousin, the Swift DZire. Presently, an updated version of the model is on sale in China and is also expected to come to India soon. Headlamps, bumpers and the grille have been modified, giving it a highly modern appearance from the outside. Interiors are expected to get a heavier dose of luxury as compared to the earlier version, which will facilitate it to compete against the likes of Volkswagen Vento, Honda City and Hyundai Verna, amid others. One can expect the SX4 to be in India any time after March 2013.
Though the A-Star has always been overshadowed by WagonR and the Estilo, it may have a point or two to prove after the launch of a facelifted version in 2013. In the new model, the round headlamps are expected to be replaced by sharper headlamps. It would be available both in 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic versions, which will cater to the demands of a large number of buyers. A bigger grille with chrome on the front bumper would also be new. MSIL may decide to incorporate more changes on the interior front, which have not been observed so far. However, industry experts are of a view that one should not expect any technical changes in the upcoming model. The car is expected to be priced between a price bracket of Rs. 3.6 lakhs and Rs. 4.6 lakhs.
Another flagship model expected to be introduced this year is Maruti Gypsy, which was initially launched in the Indian market in 1986. It has received only a single engine upgrade, in the form of a 1.3 Multi Point Fuel Injection (MPFI) engine over the previous generation model. Some changes that could be made in the revamped model include a softer suspension, power steering, air conditioning system, interiors with better plastics and a few changes to the age-old design. Next model in the list is Grand Vitara, which was launched along with the Kizashi luxury sports sedan. Interestingly, a new model of Grand Vitara has been launched as Escudo in Japan, which could be seen as a turnaround for the big SUV in India. New grille with twin bars, bumper with a black trim, new headlamps and alloy wheels are some of the changes that have been made to the exterior. Also, new material is expected to be used for the cabin and door panels, which will make the model stand apart from other competitors of the same segment.
A vehicle commonly manufactured by Suzuki in Japan is the Solio, which was also seen at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo. MSIL was looking for comments and suggestions on the design of this vehicle, which looks like a futuristic version of the WagonR. In fact, it may even replace the WagonR in the years to come. On the interior designing, it was seen that the vehicle has a manual transmission attached to the dashboard. One can expect the Solio to be powered by a 1.2 litre K-series engine, which will be capable of developing 91 bhp of power.
Top industry experts believe that Maruti Suzuki knows that its forte lies in the hatchback and entry level segment. However, it has also scored well with the Ertiga in the MUV category. But the company would be very cautious, if it decides to launch an expensive product like the Grand Vitara. With the launch of above mentioned models, MSIL expects to continue being the best manufacturer among Indian buyers.
