Upcoming models of Mahindra for 2013
Top Utility Vehicle (UV) manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra wishes to launch six new models during the year 2013. All these vehicles will be belonging to different segments of the Indian automobile market. One of the new models would be a hatchback version of Mahindra Verito. Spy pictures of the new hatchback have been taken in different parts of the country.
It appears that the new hatch would get the same 1.5 litre diesel motor already being used in the Verito sedan. This engine would produce a maximum power output of 65 bhp. In addition, a new 1.2 litre petrol engine may also be seen in this vehicle that would help it stand up against the competition. The new vehicle is expected to be a very practical version of the successful Verito sedan, which means there would not be many changes on the inside or on its front fascia. Platform sharing will definitely help the company in reducing development cost of the new hatchback. However, the new engine would be retuned to deliver better acceleration and fuel efficiency.
Another vehicle to be launched by the Mahindra would be the Korando Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), built in collaboration with SsangYong Motors. Along with the Rexton that has been launched in January, the Korando was also seen at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo. Reportedly, Mahindra is currently surveying the market to launch this SUV at an appropriate time. From the engine perspective, the new Korando should get a 2.0 litre turbocharged diesel engine, capable of generating 175 bhp of power at 4000 rpm, with a maximum torque of 360 Nm. On the outside, this SUV has a slim roof and aggressive front design, along with coach doors. Interestingly, this would be the fourth generation of the Korando, as it has been present in international markets since 1983.
In India, Mahindra's revolutionary SUV, XUV500 is already selling well and it is also being exported to international markets. Now there are talks of a possible smaller version of this mammoth SUV. With a smaller length, Mahindra feels that the new compact SUV could be a lot more attractive than the current Quanto. The company may be able to generate higher sales from the compact XUV500 than the present Quanto. In terms of changes, the XUV’s expensive monocoque chassis could make way for a cheaper ladder on frame, which is currently being used in the Quanto. Such a move would surely help in keeping overall costs down. As an engine, the new XUV is expected to get a 1.5 litre diesel engine, churning out a power of 100 bhp. There are also chances of rear jump seats being present in this new vehicle, which would increase practicality.
Just like the Verito hatch, a few spy pictures of the Verito CS sedan have come into limelight from the internet. As per what has been observed, it is possible that the CS may be a notchback (longer than hatchback), instead of a sedan. Interestingly, its alloy wheels have a ten spoke design, which is not common on most cars. In its class, Verito CS will face stiff competition from Maruti Swift DZire and Tata Indigo eCS. Reportedly, the vehicle may be launched in April 2013.
The Verito CS is expected to be powered by the 1.5 litre K9K diesel motor, also present in other Mahindra vehicles. One can expect a high mileage of about 19 kmpl from this notchback. From the side, Mahindra has just about managed to keep the proportions of this vehicle under 4 metres, which means that it would qualify for excise benefits. There will also be a suffix on this name, to differentiate it from the sedan. It is expected that the new product portfolio from Mahindra & Mahindra could make it into a worthy competitor in all segments, apart from just UVs.
