Based on the same platform as the Volkswagen Vento, the C-segment sedan enjoys a decent popularity among Indian buyers. In order to improve sales, Skoda India had launched the updated Rapid in the country last year. The new model gets minimal changes to both exteriors and interiors, but the major change is given to its engine.

It measures 4386mm in length, 1699mm in width, 1466mm in height and it comes with a large wheelbase of 2552mm. With a ground clearance of 168mm, it is easier to drive the sedan through Indian road conditions. Like we mentioned, the sedan has high resemblance to the Fabia especially from the front. The vehicle gets horizontal grille with single chrome lining running above, which is complemented by stretch back headlamps. The long hood features flowing lines that moves upward to meet the A-pillar. The bumper features wide, but thick air dam while the fog lamps are directly lifted from the hatchback sibling. The new model gets new Skoda logo on the front, rear and wheels. The sedan is finished in black and chrome, while the top-end Elegance trim now features projector headlamps. On sides, the sedan looks identical to the Vento. The flared wheel arches have been fitted to newly styled 15-inch alloy wheels. It is available in six exterior shades- Brilliant Silver, Candy White, Cappuccino Beige, Deep Black Pearl, Flash Red and new Toffee Brown.
On the inside, the new Vento features the same brown and beige colour scheme. The fit and finish, and material quality are top-notch. In order to offer premium feel, the interior door handles, centre console, gearshift indicator, air-conditioning vents and steering wheel get chrome inserts. It is equipped with a 2-DIN audio system with USB, AUX-in, SD/MMC card and Bluetooth. The multi-functional steering wheel has controls for audio and Bluetooth telephony.

The new Skoda Rapid sedan is available in two engine options- a 1.6-litre DOHC petrol and a 1.5-litre TDI diesel. The petrol engine is capable of producing a top power output of 103bhp at 5250rpm and a peak torque of 153Nm at 3800rpm. The oil burner is a 1.5-litre TDI unit, which is basically the stripped down version of the 1.6-litre turbocharged motor. This engine is capable of producing 103bhp of power at 4400rpm and 250Nm of torque at 1500rpm. A five-speed manual gearbox driving the power to front wheels is available as standard. While the petrol automatic gets a six-speed gearbox, the oil burner gets a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
Performance & Handling
The Skoda Rapid is known for its excellent driveability and handling. The suspension is tuned to absorb most potholes, and the vehicle performs best on highways. The steering is light on low speeds, and it gets stiffer on high speeds for better stability. Skoda cars are known for their build quality and handling, and the Rapid isn’t an exception here. Powering the vehicle is a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel and a 1.6-litre petrol motor. Both engines perform well on both low and mid-revs, and the high-range is also decent. The vehicle accelerates to 100kmph from zero in about 10-12 seconds.
The Skoda Rapid features disc brakes up front and drum type brakes at the rear. The braking system is further assisted by ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution) that avoids wheel-locking and skidding on panic braking.
The 1598 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 19 kmpl in city and 21 kmpl on highways, while the Petrol variant offers a mileage of 13 kmpl on urban roads and 15 kmpl and freeways, respectively.
The Skoda Rapid sedan is equipped with a host of safety and security features. The top-end variant sports dual airbags (driver & co-driver), ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution) and Brake Assist, ESP (Electronic Stability Programme), engine immobilizer, remote central locking, child safety lock, rear parking sensors, and front and rear fog lamps. However, the entry level variant misses out on some important safety features like airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist and ESP.
The Skoda Rapid offers lots of features, fuel efficient and powerful engines along with the choices of manual and automatic gearboxes. With the addition of new diesel engine and a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox, the sedan gets more appealing and lot more desirable. The vehicle offers comfortable and quality interiors, along with rock solid build quality. Overall, the Rapid is a perfect car to drive home.
The Skoda Rapid sedan is a mid-sized sedan, which directly rivals against the likes of the Honda City, MarutiSuzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna, Fiat Linea, Nissan Sunny, Renault Scala and the Volkswagen Vento.
