Recently I visited the Showroom of Royal Enfield to check out the New Classic Bullet. It was not surprising to see many potential customers energetically examining various models of the Bullet Family. The showroom itself looked like a museum with an assortment of models of Royal Enfield bikes. Each model a class in its own merit, the Thunderbird, Electra were other models attracting the customers.

That being said, the center-stage of the showroom was clearly taken by the New Bullet Classic 350 and 500EFi. The design of the Bullet is based on the classic versions during World War II, and the same appearance has been used for the updated high- performance engines,

The History

The history of Royal Enfield starts from 1851 when it started as a needle manufacturing company called Givry Works. The innovative ideas of the founders led to the manufacturing of Bicycle parts and onwards to the manufacturing of motor cycles.

The current reputation of sturdy frames and build quality still reminds us of the great foundation of this legendary company and its Bikes.

Coming on to the 1939 classic bullet, it had two rocker boxes which led to better volumetric efficiency; swinging arm rear suspension and hydraulic dampers were the new introduction in technology of Bullet. In 1948, the 500 cc twin spark bullet was introduced, delivering 25 BHP power.

The Bullet 350 cc was launched in India in 1949. Though initially parts were imported and assembled in India, in later stages full manufacturing was started in 1955. It’s really an achievement that there is still demand, which continues to grow for the legendary models. Though some of the models of 650cc and 250cc were introduced and discontinued, the Standard 350 cc and 500 cc engines still remain ever popular.

Specifications of Royal Enfield Bullet Classic 350

The Classic 350 is fitted with a 346CC engine with twin spark ignition delivering 19.8 BHP and 28 NM torque output. The bike has Front Disc and Rear Drum brakes, and conventional left foot operated gears. The maximum speed that can be expected is 120KMPH, and as per manufacturer the mileage is around 50KMPLmax. It’s available in three colours, namely Red, Silver and Black.

Specifications of Royal Enfield Bullet Classic 500

The Royal Enfield Classic 500 features a single cylinder, 4 stroke, air-cooled, 499 CC engine with electronic ignition. The engine delivers a power output of 27.2 BHP and 41.3 NM torque. The maximum speed that can be expected is 130KMPH and it has a stated mileage of 40 KMPL. The Classic 500 is available in colours of Blue, Red and Black.

Comparison with Old Bullet Classic

Coming on to the present launched Classic, the common things with the 40s model are the engine size and body style (ie. single seater). However the new Classic is technologically very advanced, examples of which include the fuel injection system, halogen bulbs and many more. But thankfully, whatever may be the changes in technology the classic bullet sound remains the same trademark sound of the Bullet.

Test Ride of Royal Enfield Bullet Classic

It was a quite easy for me to ride the Classic, as I am already using a modified 350 cc Bullet with right leg gear shift. The new Classic comes with a conventional left leg gear shift. It’s the best thing that Royal Enfield has done to the Bullet as it was a bit difficult to get used to the right leg gearshift mechanism. (I have to mention some instances where the rider met with accident as during an emergency situation he pressed the gear pedal like that of brakes in conventional bikes to stop the bike, and it was too late by the time he remembered it had left leg operated brakes.)

Riding the bike is as easy as a conventional bike, thanks to the left leg gear shift and improved suspension and brakes which help for better control of the bike - though the rider has to be prepared to take on the woofing power of 27.2 BHP for 500 cc Bullet and 19.8 BHP for 350 cc. The ride quality is awesome and rider tends to be full of JOSH to zip around in the traffic and for the onlookers the moving legend with classic sound, draws great attention. Though I went around for a small As I went around for a small test ride, it was a great fun in riding the legendary bike which justifies the improved quality as experienced from conventional version. It will indeed be a good idea to take the bike for a test ride and experience to believe it.

Remember also the mileage of the Bullet Classic which is awesome considering the cubic capacity of engine.

Price

The on-road price of Classic 350 is Rs 1.11 lakhs on-road (ex-showroom Rs 98,000) and the 500 CC comes at Rs 1.42 lakhs.(ex-showroom 1.25 lakhs).

Conclusion

It would take a lot of pages to describe the legendary models of the Royal Enfield which has evolved as part of a century long evolution. The New Classic version acts as a beautiful combination of Vintage and Next Gen bike.

The price of the Classic 500 is quite high and only very few customers with absolute fascination for class, power will opt for it. (In fact many of the fairly good conditioned used Maruti 800 cars or even an Esteem of 96/97 can be bought within the range.). But the fun and feeling of riding a classic bike is a great thing and it does justify the investment made.

In general, the Bullet Classic 350 and 500 are the benchmarks in the Royal Enfield stable and they signify the Brand value of Royal Enfield for its reliable long life engine and the bike as a whole.

As far as I myself am concerned, I am motivated to use the modified Bullet 350 cc which has been lying idle from quite some time.

  • hi,

i am a owner of RE 350 cc classic. This bike as a vibration if we go beyond 80 KM speed. that you can feel very clearly, but expecting not to affect the helath issues. If there is another constraint never belive on the showroom peoples mileage this gives only 32 KMPL in city and may be in highways its around 35 at a modeate speed of 70 KMPH... so please check this if ur a middle class men.

  • I have done test rode in most of the Bikes and gathered more details about Two wheelers above 150cc bikes. Based on my experiance and I have met big loss, it forced me to write more here. If it hurt anybody really opologize to those persons.

Really am telling you all Two wheeler will give us a back pain, Bike with GRS suspension may be give us a back pain after 1year or alter. But only Bullet Classic will be smooth forever but not other Bullets.

I had test rode on all RE bullets yesterday. By GOD JESUS grace , there was a very bad street road near to the show room as likes as my street road condition. I done test rode on it, Really am telling you I had big hit in back bone by CBZ(without GRS), Had a Hit in Back by Bullet Electra and Thunderbird too , both of it' s having GRS( but little bit less hit compare to CBZ). Finally I rode Classic. Really Awesome man. We wont find bad roads feeling in it. There is no hit in Back, Spring in Seat itself save our back bone greatly.

previously I had no idea about bullet, I thought due to its heavy weight handling ,City ride will be critical for it. But after Rode, there is Damn smooth and handling wise being very easy.

Both of me and my Brother rode Classic, Thunder Bird and Electa , Really we coludn't find Bad road feeling when we rode Classic. But in Both TB and Electa make feels a Bad Road condition. So both of us planned to buy Classic.

I had test rode in most of all Bikes.

Persons who are all planned to buy Bike for above 70K+, surely they are go with below options only:-

    1) Bike should be Good in looks
    2) It should be have smooth Ride
    3) It should be have Good qualities
    4) It should be Comfortable
    5) It should be Good for both Youth looks and Family usage.
    6) It should be Good in Mileage( atleast 40 to 55kmpl).
    7) Good Pickup and Good Breaking Conditions( disk Break)
    8) It should be with us for atleast 3+ or more years without giving any issue
    9) Good for Long Drive
    10) Never get back pain and it should be so smooth in any road conditions
    11) Handling wise should be Good
    12) Good Light at night Riding

You can get many above things from some of company Bikes but you can get all the above things from only Royal Enfield classic Bike only( Especially for Back pain, comfort,Mileage(depend upon ride) and Comfort)

Important:- Who are all having little back pain or who are all want never get back pain by Riding bike. I am strongly advicing to those persons never go for any other bikes, please go only for Royal Enfield Classic 350cc or 500cc. This will help you to ignore getting Advice from Doctor as dont Ride Two wheelers.

Back pain is not a real pain, real pain will occurs come when Doctor advice us to ignore Two wheeler.

My Experience:- Instead of getting suggestion from others, you should go for test Ride( especially in Bad Roads) before you buy. otherwise you will feel more and need to meet big loss by it.

Any Bike you can Ride in your Life for short and have a fun in it but only bike you can ride forever and help us to continue fun forever in our life( after Retired age also without any pain I believe).

Many of you who are all read it, may thing why this person writing about RE classic here, this is Just I want to share my experience to save some of them who are all seeking help about Good bike as like as me and I believe it will help many peoples.

I think u Guys knows it well so plzz help me if u can...

    11 March 2010 By  Deepak
  • check for leaking petrol tanks scratched parts the bike needs a decompressor to kickstart its the usual story the battery does nt get charged enough to turn the self motor the head lights could ve been connected directly to the alternator ive been riding these bulls for 45 years its shame the atitude of the company is the same as ever notbothered.

  • I always love RE its been my passion and my dream come true movements always.

Riding any new bike at initial stage will be always awwsome and wounder full feelings cos it wont create any problems, untill one year or 40,000 KM run. it would be great to see if any body have run the 550cc EFI or the 350 cc clasic for 40,000 KM and if they have put draw back and advantages it would be better for the new buyers…. i suggest for the RE lovers……

I always had problem with the tapped rod noise with TB and i did had problems with the service provider they never did the good job and the iron engine 1983 or older models where always the best…… hpe all RE lovers will agree for it.

How ever, last week i took a test drive of classic 350 cc and 550cc EFI, i never felt something more amazing with 350cc,compare to my tb pickup and performance but how ever compare to the 1973 iron engine the pickup of new 350 cc classic is great and there is a big different and it can be measurable
Both 350 and 500 cc engine is too noise compare to the iron engine and iam sure on the long run it will be pain under ur butts. the auto start is nice but got to think much on the batts for a long run iam sure it will be offen down and create problems……

Swap of right side gear to left side is not really the true feeling for the bullet lovers….

550 cc is wounderfull and iam about book one this April and i loved the inital pickup and 3+ sec to reach 0 to 60 is wounder full i never felt is with any other Indian bike so far. the fuel alert is nice, and the EFI from keihin is nice hpe it will be stable even after 40,000 Km.

There is always drawback and +point, how ever RE is alway my passion and i alwasy love it……

  • yes u rite.,, while purchasing the bike the sales manager promised me dat dey provide excellent service , but after purchasing its completely reverse.,, for de first 4 free services dey do nothing, jus dey water wash de bike, more over the service ppl r not supportive and the service timings are too odd (8am to 6pm @ BARODA) for a job holder.,i request Eicher motors to look after dis and provide gud service.otherwise GOD only save us.,

    07 February 2010 By  Victor
  • very nice review,i been having a TB for last 5 years and a old 1972 iron engine of my father for last 30 yrs.
one of th major problem is the service that is been provided by the RE service station, there response realy sucks..!! and all they want is just to market the bike and they dont think or provide a great servce.
I like the classic 500 for the great initial pickup is awsome...,wt '
Naved Ansar' comment is true, it should be with the right side gear shifter to make it really classic.

Thinking about advance technology,it just got a buzzer light alert for low fuel, its hard to measure your fuel on long drives without it.May be rpm gage is missing in talking with technology it would be more nice if it had a really one!!
    Draw backs:
The auto start doesn't really worths for the huge bike, sure on the long run its going to painful...and iam sure its going to mess up cos of the spare cost will be...
I admire the EFI technology, it wounder full to see the great bikes are implemented with it, and sensor for side stand parking are great, hpe there is no body got suck with the sensor problem..ops!!

How ever, i still like the bike and i am planing to get 500 RE soon.
old standard iron engine bikes still the great charms with stability and cheep spare cost. LB engine got there own high pick with buzzy engine with offen tapic noise.
how ever once u get use with RE u cant go with anyother bike, its a kind of adict that always make you to ride it for life..

Always there is good things and drawback of any product int his world.
For better performance, for high speed and to zip the road its always the 500 ECI...

    01 February 2010 By  Murliz
  • Are you sure when you say you can get 50 kmpl on a bullet - no matter whichever model and 40 kmpl from a 500CC bullet - This puts me in a lot of doubt on whether you have an experience of riding a bullet in the first place. 50 kmpl is what you get on a pulsar / apache - With a bullet, you might just manage to get something halfway.

    21 January 2010 By  KVSKP
  • Your dates are a bit off. Bullets started to be imported systematically to India in 1949. In 1955 the factory was established to assemble complete knock down kits imported from the UK. Full assembly only took place in India towards 1962.

  • what is the use of a Classic Bullet if it is not known for its historical manoeuvring of Gears at Right and Break padel at left?

This is not for real Bullet lovers.

  • grt work by RE., presently havng red TBTS.,it catches all attention in my township,, thanks to RE., literally i became RE ambassador here at Baroda, coz nearly 100 ppl (more dan 200kms)test trailed my bird., recently RE announced abt 800cc nd 1000cc,,am waitng waitng waitng.wen i park it ,really all other bikes r just toys in front of RE .BUt ofcourse i am facing problem in servicing, dese local service providers are not soo faithful nd more over dey r not bike lovers(especially at baroda).,, pls RE do somding.,, i need bike lovers as de service providers.,
