First impressions of Maruti Suzuki A-STAR - A User Review

It can be said that the Maruti Suzuki A-Star was born to rule the roads.

Maruti Suzuki has come up with a strong competitor for Santro, i10 D-Lite and Getz GLE. The body style of the A-Star looks similar to the Getz, but improved. The front of the car gives a good impression of a skilled work in improving style. At the same time, the car can be called as an intermediate between an Alto and a Swift.

There is distinguishable difference between the model shown in the Auto Expo and the one actually produced - it looks like a decent updated style car. Surely though it will be disappointing for the people who were expecting the actual concept car A-star.

The interiors look good. The legroom has been improved and the seats are very much comfortable. Dashboard is awesome with all controls available at no stretch of arm. The consol and dashboard display are delightful with dashboard lights on . The hatchback door design gives impression of an improved version of Zen.

Performance

With 3 cylinder 998 cc engine and a power output of 67/6200 you can expect 16KMPL in city and max 20KMPL in highway. The power is quite good compared to i10 with 4 cylinder 66 ps engine.

Overall

With the power of 67Ps, very good dashboard design, refreshing body style compared to Alto, this car will become the chosen one for the people looking for a car better than an Alto and with a lower price and decent body style compared to a Swift.

  • Europe has a higher standard in terms for road safety, emission control and vehicle specification. Also they are more concerned about space and comfort. We in India almost always have travelled on Indian Railway, Indian buses and ofcourse cabs that are stripped down to an extent where they will be called choppers. A-star meets good vehicle specification, stringent emission control norms, and safety standards. It also have a level of comfort and space. Hence europeans are lapping it up. In India, we are trying to be too intelligent for our own good. We prefer a wagonR rather than a a-star. No wonder we are Indians. I mean just look at wagonR. It has a drag so high that you would burn 20% more feul any day.

  • Everything is good Height is is fine when compared with other cars in its segment . mileage is good. on highway it is around 21 and 16-17 in city.Price is also low as compared to others in this segment.on the whole a-star is a best choice

  • I also felt after sitting inside this car that Maruti should have launched this as a 2-seater car because it has very less leg space at the back.

  • I was watching the A-Star promos & was catching a few glimpses on the road. I am 6 foot +, I am driving a Maruti 800, I decided to take a test drive & visited Sagar Automobiles.
The Car (VXI Model) of course is good for short people, It has smooth, joystick type gear shift, Power steering, powerwindows, Audio System with AC. It has power even though it has a less than 1000 cc Engine. Turning is easy. It is a wide body car.

But Beleive me the driver seat is really cramped, I feel that a 800 is more spacious than a A-Star. The boot back seat space & the boot space is really negligible.

As many have said, the pricing is very high.

  • Maruti Astar is completly bulit on loadcart assembly line i think. it has some much nonsense stuffed inside a box. Swift steering doesnt go nice with Astar. Cramped legroom. Windscreen view too little. dashboard restricts ur view to see things around you. bootspace ekdum bakwaas. headroom too little . Even though they claim mileage @ 19.6km but what hell its cost you when you are not enjoying the drive.sirf headlight accha dene se car bikti nahi hai bhai...

  • What i can say for A-Star is that, i'm not impressed. Doors are short to enter and space in Diggi is also not too much. I prefer i10 in place of A-Star

  • I wanna to purchase a car in december. I want to choose in between i10, santro gls or A star. can any one guide me to get the best, maintenance wise affordable, and value for money.

    10 December 2008 By  Mithilesh
  • I liked the review, very balanced. And I am inclined to agree with you. The car is very different from what's already out there on the Indian roads. It's got a very niche and well-defined positioning and it fills the gaps in customer demands very well.

    10 December 2008 By  Manisha
  • Oh My Gawwd! I loove the A-star. It's the hottest looking car ever. Can't wait to get my hands on it!!

    09 December 2008 By  Swati
  • I Test drove the car ... Its terrific.. Power, Solid built,High ground clearance, Wide ... Dashboard looks good... But seriously feel Maruti is fooling the Indian Public on the Price front..Wont Rate it more than 3 lacs Ex Showroom...

  • HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET A AUTO TRANSMISSION IN THE A SEGMENT FOR VERY LONG. OTHER THAN I10, NO OTHER OPTION, I10 IS REDICULOUSLY HIGH PRICED, RS 5 LAKH ON ROAD IN CHENNAI,, EEVN THIS CAR A STAR DOES NOT HAVE A AUTO OPTION, HELPPPPPPP

    02 December 2008 By  Suresh
  • First Impression is very bad... Legs space is very small. My high is 5.8 and i am not comfortable bez leg space is very small. i think less than Alto 800.
Maruti was and will continue to be a company that lacks good design skills. No car from Maruti have good look.
I thing i10 is best option as compare to i10

    28 November 2008 By  Kumar
  • Mr.Mithilesh and Vijay . Think A-star would be the Best option.

    28 November 2008 By  Hemant
  • i test drove the a - star.
tachyometer position terrible. Vxi version better without it.
true that rear seats are cramped. cannot stretch legs or place feet below the front seats since front seats are v low. my maruti 800 has more room.
boot space seemed fine to me.
    road visibility also good.
look of the car also stylish.
advan over i-10 is the mileage and servicing.

  • Hyundai i10 and Indica vista petrol are the best alternative to A Star.

  • Hello friends,
Please use good photos, I have driven maruti 800 and Esteem, and of course maruti cars are of best vehicles, but this A-Star is on little expensive side considering its features, maruti cars interiors are very bad and they use very cheap plastic materials type, and dash board is very ugly, not much on height also, should be more on comfort like free leg space and luggage room, space between front and back seats etc., Maruti should learn to change these factors, as take Hyundai and Matiz models which more spacious. Anyhow Maruti is still market leader, as its target is always Indian Middle class. Shyamsundar(Sandur) - Blore

    26 November 2008 By  Shyamsundar
  • This is one of the best car in its segment i have ever seen. After all maruti is maruti

  • this car looks funky i want to know more abt height differnce wagon r & A-star

    25 November 2008 By  Jimmy
  • What's all the noise about?

Take the bonnet of the swift and attach it to the Estillo, fiddle with the lights, dashboard and what Viola!!! You have a A-Star.

As always, neither here nor there.

Maruti was and will continue to be a company that lacks good design skills. No car from Maruti (with or without A Star) is truely complete - always lost of issues.

Maruti sales are best simply because they offer a middle class car with good after sales service - that is what the middle class want - middle of the road car - neither here nor there.

    Jai Maruti

PS: I drive a Maruti Zen Estillo.

  • Good looking, fantastic color matching upholstry. a chalange with other cars like getz, prime & iio on maintanance . A little consideration can be shown on price.

    22 November 2008 By  Subramanian
  • hi ,
Beautiful and lovely modal lets see how much catch market plese be fast .

22 November 2008 By  Jai Prasad Subba
  • Maruthi is small cars thinks in different angle. I Being the user of Maruti 800 and also Alto, I have already fed up with the concept. I can challenge Maruti 800 fit with A/c.is a better performer than Alto. On this comparison I am dam sure Just increasing the power of the engine and trying to impress the people with Looks and Interiors costing double than a Maruti 800 is a foolish Idea. I feel now my car should be other than maruti in small car segment. Being the Proud owner of maruthi after seeing this car I feel sorry. I shall better go for one more 800 instead or other company cars.

  • Since the name is "A" Star, so its Demanding "A" grade star pricing, this movie will be a complete flop,

    22 November 2008 By  Mithun
  • Hi
first impression of maruti A-star is great look but in this credit crunch the valube should be around 2.5lakh to 3 lakh

    22 November 2008 By  Valmiki
  • Hi,
First of all, all maruti small car models are good but legroom, dashboard is very very small and very uncomfortable to drive, lookwise very good, not much on luggage room space, and height is also small, price is too higher side, it should be avilable max. of 2.5 to 3 lakhs most. S.Joshi - Bangalore

22 November 2008 By  Shyamsundar Joshi
  • No doubt lookwise maruti A star is good but pricewise too high, it should be max upto 3 laks.

    22 November 2008 By  Suhas
  • pls use good photos. already the look of the car is out of focus. lets see what is going to happen in the market and how it is going to competete with the other budgeted cars

    22 November 2008 By  Imrankhan
  • HI,
This is a clean competetitor for i10, people going for i10 in hundai this car is the best compare to prize ,maintenance, economy and service points.i think there is no other car in this segment with these features. So this is a SURE success for maruti.

    21 November 2008 By  Ravishankar
  • head lamp so good as PORSCHE the body seems lite ,

21 November 2008 By  Manu Satkar

  • Marutis star seams to realy get good responce as per yr artical

    21 November 2008 By  Narhar
  • FIRST LOOK IS NICE BUT REAR SEAT IS A LETDOWN ,FRONT STYLING IS GOOD BUT NOT CHEERING AGAIN NO DIESEL OPTION,WHEELBASE BETTER,SEETHROUGH HEADREST ARE MUST

21 November 2008 By  ASHOAKE SATKAR
  • Though i haven't have a close look on the car, but what appears from the brochures and snaps posted here... The car looks high on styling, letdown from the rear end, and quite high on the pricing. I would expect a car of this size to be close to 3.0-3.25 L Tag, nothing beyond. Dash board and IP are truly new and promising. From the concept car they should have picked the Headlamps and Rear lighting.... having worked on some component development for the car, i was waiting for this car ... not anymore. I would stick to i10,spark on lower segment and Swift/Uva/Getz on higher segment. Doesn't look a Value for Money product to me.

  • Hi
A Star is a small nice and compact car. I wanna to know, is the luggage room is big enough to accommodate CNG cylender if one wanna to fit?

    21 November 2008 By  Mithilesh
  • the car will fail like rajnikanth's baba movie. It created huge expectations and differs a lot from which was relased earlier. Its a real scrap u can exchange it for dates(perichambazham)

    21 November 2008 By  Yogesh
  • everything good but price is high. it should be around 300000

21 November 2008 By  Rajesj Cv
  • Hi!
Maruti A-star, it just deserves A grade and its look so stylish and very comfortable too.

    21 November 2008 By  Rima A Kunvrani
  • tottal disappointment i had it was looking better in autoshow its waste

    21 November 2008 By  Sekar
  • The car looks great but still performance on road is more important. i hope maruti suzuki will do always good. iam worried about the leg room space where maruti always fails compare to other competitiors. Anyway Astar is going to be a star in india and Europe.

    21 November 2008 By  Aashish
  • ofcose yes, it has a great look & millage, but let watch & see the performance for next 2 months. price is on little bit higher side..but it has got style & millage both, which is the desire for every customer... best of luck.

    21 November 2008 By  NAGRAJ D PAGAREY
  • Good Look. Super Mileage. greate success for MAruti.

    21 November 2008 By  Saheer P K
  • Look wise this car is a star, but a complete car has to good looks, good space and should perform well. We would have to wait and see for the performance part feedback. I am sure, the space is reduced considerably to give it good looks. For good pics, please logon to maruti official website.

    21 November 2008 By  Blaze
  • The pictures here are very blur, quality wise, pathetic and doesn't give the first impressions of Maruti A-Star. Please use better camera.

    21 November 2008 By  Manohar
  • price should be less. Mileage is impressive

21 November 2008 By  Satya Prasad
  • Congratulations !in frst impresisions of maruti A star is great look, This is a very good car from Maruti. A perfect reply to Hyundai i10 and santro{but over all disapnting!}gaurav ganglani

    20 November 2008 By  Gaurav
  • Maruti has done the same mistake again.....this is on the Wagon R platform and rear seats are same as Estilo...I saw this car 2day n was very disappointed with the concept

    20 November 2008 By  Chandy
  • The car is a bit congested, less leg room. Moreover the Dash board is high for the driver's seat. Therefore the front view is not clear.Boot space is also very less.Seats are less comfortable.I think, Alto is better than this car other than the looks from outside.

20 November 2008 By  VIKALP DUTT
  • concept was good looking the real car seems ugly built, it could hav been better let's see wheather it defeats i10 or get itself out of compitition.

20 November 2008 By  Janeshwar Banshtu
  • Congratulations ! This is a very good car from Maruti. A perfect reply to Hyundai i10 and santro. A Winner.

  • I was w8ing for A Staar concept not this bogus model. Will buy i10. Maruti is flop.

20 November 2008 By  Ashis Saxena
  • its a crampy car, the leg room behind is very very less; ever lesser than the alto. the rear seats are not comfortable. the rear windows are too small and its a stuffy car. the boot space in the dicky is very less, a big bag wont fit in ..the tachometer in zxi is kept on the dashboard, this is the most stupid thing..No alloy wheels in zxi, thats so sad....i feel the old alto is much better to look and more spacious

20 November 2008 By  Gunjan Puri
  • i think its not look as concept,& in this price i go for indica vista tdi at the same price.........

    20 November 2008 By  Vijay
  • Maruti A-star cannot be compared with Maruti Swift. The price is on higher side. Range be with 3 lakhs.

    20 November 2008 By  Subramanian
  • car is not attractive....lets see whether hits market or not....

    20 November 2008 By  Vishal
  • Rear styling is verey good but the front looks disappointing. Interior is average. On road performance and fuel efficiency needs to be seen. THe price could have been slightly lower.

20 November 2008 By  Iype Koshy
  • The first impression of A - star is very much disappointing and comparing to Alto the cost is very high @ almost same performance.

    20 November 2008 By  RAMESH
  • Looks good. But the price a bit on the upper side.

20 November 2008 By  Prakash Narayan
  • good but little dear price. Price 3.0 lacs is ok .

20 November 2008 By  Omvir Singh
  • No other good images a?

    20 November 2008 By  Arun
  • Price seems on the higher side

    20 November 2008 By  Pravin
