New era, new power and a capacity to lure old and new customers! This is what Maruti Suzuki India Limited has kept in mind when it launched the new powerful variant of its best selling model Maruti Alto. The model now comes with more powerful engine with improved styling cues. Maruti holds nearly 50 percent market share and new entrants in the market pose a threat to its market supremacy. With the launch of newer models every day, it shows that it intends to give a tough fight to its competitors in coming next few decades.

Today we take a look at the new Maruti Alto K-10.

The earlier version of the Maruti Alto featured a 797 cc engine delivering power of 45 BHP, and the car proved to be India’s best selling small car. Still, cars like Santro, Wagon R, and Indica which all deliver power above 60 BHP, certainly had an edge over Alto in terms of power and comfort. Nevertheless, the Alto did achieve universal acknowledgement for reliability and lower maintenance cost.

Now Maruti Suzuki has introduced its new Alto K-10 in which it has implemented its new k-series 998 cc engine which already has proven good performance in Estillo, A-Star, and New Wagon R.

Exteriors of the Maruti Alto

Alto has oftentimes been considered an extended version of the no-frills M800 model. The car has all the basic features that 800 lovers may miss and yet want something more. With the new Alto, Maruti has done little in changing the exterior designs, though a subtle sleekness has been introduced. There is nothing that is majorly noticeable and the car still looks like a simple, no-nonsense model that captures customers based on price and usability. Yet, the new Alto has its curves just at the right places to give an overall sleek and sliding appearance.

It may not be noticeable but the front end has been pushed a little, by 125mm, making the overall length of the new Alto to 3620mm as against 3495mm of the old variant. The change comes mainly to accommodate the new engine.

The new Alto features a new clear lens head lamp and newly designed rear combination lamp and new colour options in which Sunlight Copper seems to be the most likeable colour for Alto k10. New door trims, body colour bumper, and body coloured rear view mirror option makes it look like a complete and personalized hatchback.

Interiors of Maruti Alto K-10

The top end model of the new Maruti Alto has a touch of dual tone. But do not expect anything in stark contrasts. The two tone interiors are mild where Maruti has placed a combination of grey with light bluish colour which does not really stand out as contrasting interiors. The colour pads on the doors match the seat interiors.

One of the noticeable things is that the front seats have been given a curve from behind. This means a little more space to the rear passengers and makes them more comfortable. Even though the wheelbase remains the same and overall length does not change, intelligent interior designing can definitely make more space within the same frame.

Further, there is introduction of integrated head rest seats in front and all seats are of good quality fabric. Apart from that additional features like cupholder in console, and rear seat head rest add to the additional comfort of interiors.

Despite the seat redesign, the main drawback of the Alto is the leg space which feels congested for front seat passengers, especially the driver seat. I felt (My height is 5’ 9”) like I got fixed to the front seat with two legs resting on pedals, right hand elbow on door pad .

Engine and Specifications of Maruti Alto K-10

Now in the engineering is where Maruti has really introduced a major change. The new 3-cylinder engine has displacement of 998cc and is boosted with MPFi components. It yields a power of 67 bhp at 6200 rpm and 90Nm of torque at 3500 rpm. Currently, it is available as petrol model but diesel is soon to follow. The new model has boosted performance of at least 45 percent even though it weighs 50kgs more than its predecessor.

Colour options of the Maruti Alto K-10 include Midnight Black, ECRU Beige, Silky Silver, Fire Brick Red, Superior White, and Sunlight copper.

It is currently available in two variants, LXi and VXi, the specifications of which are shown below.

Some interesting features of the Maruti Alto include collapsible steering column, side impact beams, child lock, immobiliser, all of which add to the comfort of using the car.

Maruti Alto Drive

The new engine speaks of performance through and through. Even at 100kmph, you do not feel that engine is strained. A test drive on highway was a pleasure and the car accelerated from 0-100kmph in around 15 seconds although Maruti claims it to be 13.3 seconds. Power to weight ratios plays an important role in maximum utilization of power developed, and the Alto with gross vehicle weight of 1185 KG clearly has an advantage in this regard.

As can be expected, a small car is economic in nature. In our drive, we achieved a mileage of 18 KMPL against Maruti’s claimed 20.2 kmpl.

The new Maruti Alto K10 has 155/65 R13 tubeless radials whereas the older F-series model had 145/80 R 12s. Moreover, the brakes and suspensions have also been beefed up which means better driveability and a smoother ride. The larger wheels are well-supported by enlarged brakes and gas-filled shock absorbers.

While returning to the city, the car could be manoeuvred easily and the rear was not dancing away at the turns. The car gives a contended sense of driving and manoeuvrability under tough urban traffic conditions. The cable actuated transmission is a bonus to the drivers.

Comparison of Maruti Alto

In its segment, the Alto competes mostly with the Spark and a number of other cars from the Maruti stable. The table below shows the comparative overview.

Conclusion

Maruti Alto K10 is a simple car with a simple design that has all features like practicality, driveability, mileage, comfort and price, in a manner well-suited to Indian mind-set. Moreover, it being a Maruti, it can be expected to have excellent re-sale value as well.

The Alto K10 with 998 cc engine is clearly a great initiative from Maruti Suzuki. An interesting thing will be the consequences for the A-Star which features the same engine and costs higher by 67 thousand for VXi variant. Even the Wagon R and Estillo also have the same engine and have a price difference of around 67k or so onroad. Of course, the major advantage of other models would be the interior space and hence comfort.

As far as Alto K10 is concerned, it has all ingredients to take up the legacy left by earlier model Alto. If anyone can feel comfort with the leg space provided, then Alto K10 would certainly give highest satisfaction of owning a small hatchback.

In sum, for people looking for a powerful compact car at a minimum price, the new Alto is the answer.

Comments on this review

  • I am not satisfied by my Alto K10 VXI model. Milage is not more than 10kms. Reported the same to service centre, but still mileage not improved.
Its just a waste of money.

  • I bought the Alto K10 Vxi this May 2011. Just driving for 200km the A/C gave me problem. Starnge sound was heard from the engine compartment whenever I switch on the A/C. I have send my car the workshop but till today there is no solution. A/C gas depeleted at least three times but there is reason given my the technician.

  • whenever I over take a lorry or a bus in my old Alto-LXI, it was very difficult as the engine was not raising, I have to shift my gear to third, and then over take. But, I could feel the difference in K10. My problem is only with the dealers as they don't concentrate on what we try to remark. I have taken a drive at 130 KMPH in Alto-LXI. Hope, I will again have a long drive and share my comments.

  • Maruti Alto K-10 Lxi very nice car more space & good control. I think K-10 Lxi is good budget car ,but vry lack space in front seat.

  • There is a AC leakage problem which I felt while driving this Alto K10 VXI. when you have AC settings to only body side, the AC is still provided to the leg space of the driving seat.

I think this should be taken care by maruti suzuki, other wise people will stop buying Alto K10, because its more usage of fule unnecessarily.

    18 February 2011 By  Jags
  • Hi, I think there is some problem with AC setting.

You set the AC option to default Body side alone, even then the AC is supplied to your foot like wise in the option of body and foot of the driving seat.

This is my obsrvation. you can find it in demo cars of Alto K10 also.

This could be a big draw back after using for soem time....

  • I have alto K10 ,which has run around 1000 KMS.
My vehilce has a peculier problem of wobbling/vibraction @ only 60 to 70 km speed from 300 kms of drive till now .
Which is being reported to workshop form my 1st visit, the problem was
taken care but no solution, And even called one of the incharge person.
Many experiment was done on the service station
    but no solution was provided.
I owned maruti alto 800 earlier which was not having any problem
. Really worst performance . Vehicle is not good on road grip poor breaking and more worst in rain road compared to alto 800 . Worst engineering .
I suggest alto k10 buyers not to go with alto k10.
not worth for the money .....

  • good to read, the changes made in new model, but again you have left security bag which is most important for security purpose. You might going to change in next model to attract Indian customers for Alto small car.

17 August 2010 By  Sudesh Sharma
  • taken test drive of alto K10 on 15th august.

Exterior - Looks same as older version(no noticable change)
Interior - for small ht'ed person 5'5 like me, boot space is ok. For ht more than 5'8 very crampy.
luggage space is better. Interior also improved with curved back of front seat for some leg space for rear seat.
drive was not very plesent, even with new power was very difficult to cruz smoothly(like wagon -r)
With Ac on and 4 people sitting vehicle dragged, i drive zen and definately felt zen is always better.

After evaluation, although slightly over prised, a good car overall for middleclass family person.

  • THE ALTO K10 IS A DISASTER FOR MUL
AT A LOWER PRICE U CAN EASILY BUY ESTELLIO , A DEALER IN DELHI OFFERS IT FOR FOR AS LOW AS RS.3,40,000 ONLY ,
I THINK i10 ERA IS A MUCH BETTER CHOICE & BARGAIN

    16 August 2010 By  Rahul
  • Why should I buy this mediocre/cramped car for 3.7+ lakhs? Go and buy bigger/better/stable/solid/quieter Santro for less! And the gimmic of "introductory" price is absolutely ridiculous! Estillo (another crappy car from Maruti) has kept giving 50k discount since its lanch 3-4 years back! Whole low pricing of m800 and Alto is like this - every one sells a kg of rice for Rs 30, where as Maruti sells 0.5 kg for Rs 20. Average people don't look at per kg price, they just think Rs 20 is less than 30!

This car is not more than 2.5 lakhs onroad, period.

    16 August 2010 By  Srini
  • Ex show room price for Alto LXi in Bangalore is 3.11 lakh and For VXi its 3.24 Lakh . List of features is correct.
Realy Sorry for the typo error.

    16 August 2010 By  Shiva
  • It is sure that the review is without actually driving the car. the front portion of alto k10 is increased for about 10 cm and it makes very ugly in appearence( it is not merc for such a long bonnet). DRIVING IS NOT SMOOTH. It is like fitting 100 cc engine to a bicycle.

15 August 2010 By  BOSCO LAWARENCE
  • I think its good news for indian car markets and we indian , good gift in the occosion off 15 aug(Idipendent day)
