It is nothing but improved MM 540.M&M is trying to sale its old chasis and body with the new engine with a price tag of Rs. 6 to 8 lakhs. It is better to buy a second hand MM 540 4wd in Rs. 30000 and recondition it by investing Rs. 1.5 lakhs and take the pleasure of Thar. Then why to invest 8 lakhs. Why not to wait for worlds cheapest SUV hard top Dacia Duster which u can search on the Net and u will find no one can compare with it with a price tag of Rs. 7 to 8 lakhs. Dear friends,
I don't want to hurt your feelings but the concept of modifying an old decommissioned Jeep is not as easy as it looks when we talk.
First of all you invest lots of time and efforts to search a vehicle. Then it is not sure what is the condition of it. Then your hard earned money is in the hands of road-side grease monkeys. They put all kinds of "Jugad" and may also suggest you to put Toyota and Nissan engines. Which will never be on your RC paper and forget about the Insurance. Your vehicle is fully illegal. Thanks to the Indian police that they give little respect to the Jeeps and don't ask for the papers much as per my experience. You are always involved in the rectification like wiring, gear mismatch, clutch problems, alternator. Even the best quality paint goes within one year. Me and my friends are maintaining Jeeps but it is more adventure to maintain rather then to drive. If you want to beautify your home garage then of course go for a customized jeep with thick alloy wheels and flashy color. But if you really want to drive to the adventurous trips then always go for a trusted vehicle.
Of course if you want your own customization then purchase the DI version from Mahindra and do a makeover on the body. You can modify it like the old classic, even to the low bonnet but again don't play with it's mechanics like engine swap etc.
Excuse me for the harsh realities but I wanted to share them with you because I respect your Jeep passion.
