The Chevrolet Beat Diesel comes with a 1.0L SMARTECH Diesel Engine with peak power output of 58.5PS@4000rpm and peak torque output of 150PS@1750rpm. Some of the highlighted technical features in the car are the usage of Turbocharger with intercooler, advanced common rail fuel injection, Feather light Electronic power steering, advanced intra torque boost, Smart engine and clutch protection model, Gas charged rebound tuned suspension etc.

The other important attraction of the car, is the Beat diesel’s mileage, which has been certified at 24 KMPL.

Color options in the New Chevrolet Beat diesel include Green cocktail, Misty Lake, Olympic White, Switch blade silver, Caviar Black, Super Red, Moroccan Blue, Linen Beige, and Sand Drift Grey.

The Beat Diesel comes in 4 variants, PS, LS, LT and LT option. The on-road price of the Chevrolet Beat Diesel PS variant in Bangalore is Rs 5,27,989/-, LS is Rs 5,64,368/-, LT is 6,17,766/-, and LT Option is Rs 6,73,149/- , for the metallic variants; for non-metallic colors, the on road price would be lesser by Rs 8,000/-.

Chevrolet Beat Diesel drive

Eager to check the high fuel efficient beat diesel, I took a drive of the LT model Beat. Getting into the car is easy and convenient with the help of the large front door. Once seated in driver seat, one feels that that the seat height is slightly low. The controls are positioned accurately. Starting is quite easy with no need to wait for some time.

I took out the car from the congested parking place. I could easily steer the car smoothly and take out the same. The gear operation is quite smooth and we could easily accelerate to 60KMPH while in the city. While driving one can notice there is slightly excessive noise from engine, especially if one has driven the smooth performing petrol engine. One tends to feel that insulation could have been even better.

The car accelerates smoothly and nicely and it’s easy to keep up with the traffic. However, when one leaves the city, there is some more pressure to keep up with the traffic. All in all, however, the car provides a good drive.

The car is touted to carry a 24 KMPL mileage, which we will be testing on a future drive. The major boosting factor with the Beat apart from this mileage is the class leading ground clearance of 175MM which directly influences the ease of crossing humps and potholes. It could be felt when driving the same, especially in the city.

The Beat diesel’s A/C is good and cools the cabin quickly and efficiently.

Competition for the Beat Diesel

There are many competing models for the Chevrolet Beat Diesel, starting from Tata Indica, Ford Figo, Maruti Ritz, Swift, Fiat Punto, VW Polo, Nissan Micra etc. The table below gives the brief comparison of the same. Overall, it can be noted that though the power output of Beat diesel is slightly less compared to others like Figo, Indica etc. it still is reasonable. The under power is caused due to the fact that the Beat diesel comes with a 1.0L engine compared to 1.2 L and higher of other models. The mileage and pricing are other stand out facts.

The claimed mileage of Beat is 24KMPL which is in par with most of the recently launched diesel version hatchbacks like Indica eV2, Micra, Figo etc for which mileage ranges from 20 to 25KMPL.

Conclusion

Chevrolet has come up with a good solution in providing a diesel hatch back giving best of mileage added with the styling and quality of Chevrolet cars. The great boosting factor is the warranty backup, smooth performance, quality of interior fit and finish, as well as the ground clearance of 175mm.

However, the drawback could be that of the price which seems to be a bit high for lower variants like PS  and LS, but is quite justifiable for higher versions with better features.
