About Renault Pulse [2015-2017]
Summary
Renault Pulse, launched in 2012, is the rebadged Nissan Micra, which received quite a few interior updates in 2015. The new model features automatic headlamps along with the conventional large grille, wider air dam and bulged front bumper. The updated interior gets a new centre console with a piano black finish, a dual tone dashboard and steering mounted controls. Features like a 2-DIN audio system with Bluetooth, USB and Aux-in connectivity, crash sensors, ABS+ EBD and dual airbags are carried forward from the old model. The hatchback is offered in two engine options - a 75bhp, 1.2-litre, in-line petrol unit and a 63.1bhp, 1.5-litre, K9K diesel motor. The diesel model is the same that powers other Renault car models as well including the Scala and Duster, but in different states of tune. Both the engines are coupled with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The ride quality and handling of the car is quite impressive. It’s easy to drive in city traffic. However, the brakes are spongy and pedal lacks feel.
Further to this, read Renault Pulse Road Test details by our expert.
Exterior
The hatchback shares most of its styling elements with the Micra, except few tits - bits. The new model gets automatic headlights, while rest of the styling remains similar to the old model. It sports a large trapezoidal grille, pronounced front bumper, wide air-dam and green tinted glass. The RxZ diesel variant gets 170/60 R15, 15-inches alloy, while rest of variants come with 165/70 R14, 14-inches steel wheels.
Interior
Renault cars in India are known for their spacious and practical interiors, so as the Pulse. The company tweaked the interior of the hatch, in 2015, which is now looks similar to the updated Nissan Micra. It gets a new centre console with a piano black finish, a dual tone dashboard and steering mounted controls. Whereas, 2-DIN audio system with Bluetooth, USB and Aux-in connectivity, crash sensors, ABS+ EBD and dual airbags remain unchanged.
Engine and Transmission
The Renault Pulse is available in both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol version is powered by a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, in-line, DOCH engine, also powers the Nissan Micra, producing a maximum power of 75bhp @ 6000rpm with 104Nm @ 4000rpm.
The diesel version gets its power from a 1.5-litre, 4 cylinder, in-line, SOCH engine. It churns out a maximum power of 63.1bhp @ 4000rpm with 160Nm @ 2000rpm. Both the engines are mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Performance & Handling
Engines are quite refined, but get noisy at high speeds, especially the diesel one. Both the powertrains are punchy and have negligible turbo-lag. Low-end throttle response and mid-range performance are good. Handling is predictable, and ride is comfortable.
Braking System
Braking performance is mediocre. The front ventilated disc and rear drum brakes are spongy, and pedal lacks feel. The car remains stable under sudden braking situation, thanks to ABS (anti-lock braking system) + EBD (Electronic brake-force distribution).
Mileage
The 1461 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 22 kmpl in city and 24 kmpl on highways, while the Petrol variant offers a mileage of 16 kmpl on urban roads and 18 kmpl and freeways, respectively.
Safety Features
Features like front fog lamps, engine immobilizer, driver airbag, speed sensing auto door lock, high mounted stop lamp, child proof rear door locks, front and rear head restraints and anti-pinch safety function on driver side door come as standard. ABS+ EBD and dual airbags are available on the top-end variant only.
Verdict
The Renault Pulse is a complete package with modern styling, well-equipped interior and punchy and frugal engines. It’s easy to drive in city as well as on highways.
Competition
Renault Pulse Vs Maruti Suzuki Swift
The Pulse looks more aggressive and stylish than the Nissan Micra. It’s a more feature-rich and up-market product than its predecessor. Engines are punchy across different rev-range. It’s among the most fuel efficient Renault cars in India. The new Swift appears sportier and more outgoing than its rival. Interiors of the Swift are quite practical and premium. The fuel efficiency, ride and handling are improved, too. What favours the Swift of the Pulse is its drivability, ride & handling, power, fuel efficiency and Maruti’s strong dealership network.

- Addition comfort-enhancing features
- Punchy and frugal K9K engine

User Reviews for Pulse [2015-2017]
Amazing car with good features
Whats GoodLooks, feel and driving pleasure. It has ABS, is fuel efficient, is easy to drive in the traffic and even if it is made on the same platform as the micra, it looks more rugged and i think it is the most underrated car in the compact car segment.
What Can ImproveMarket this car more. It is a decent car but people are swayed by what they hear. It's interiors could be worked upon a bit too. Recent launch of a better pulse is a good move.
Test drive this car before ruling it out.

Just press accelerator to unleash this devil
Whats GoodPros - Driving comfort, Peppy & Powerful Engine (1500 cc), Mileage, Maintenance, Front shape, Brand Renault, Almost negligible engine noise inside cabin, negligible car vibration, Unique (as not much sold in india), Base model has driver airbag, Electrically controlled side mirrors, Fantastic company fitted sound system, Solid Suspension, Though ABS not avaialable but brakes are super powerful (no chance of skidding) I just love brakes of this car(Driving at even 100 km/hr can stop your your car without hassle)
What Can ImproveCons- Resale value(Guessing), Car tyres (Company fitted) are not of famous international brands so tyre pressure needs to be checked very frequently, few service centres, and surely dashboard
Mileage depends upon one's driving style (to large extent). I personally got 27.5 kmpl on highway, gurgaon to chandigarh. Use less hard braking and drive at 90-100 km/hr. All Engines for hatchbacks and compact sedans (for indian market) are designed to deliver better mileage than just sheer power, so if driven above 100 km/hr, mileage will suffer (undoubtedly). I already drove this car 25,000 kms without even a single penny spent apart from service. Highways, village roads, city traffic everywhere. At minimal cost of 10,000 you get airbag for co-passenger also.
