Founder & First Car

Nissan Motor Company Ltd., is a multinational car manufacturer with its headquarters situated in Japan. However, the company began its operation as Datsun. The company's name came after the manufacturer's partners' family names - Kenjiro Den, Rokuro Aoyama and Meitaro Takeuchi - DAT. In 1918, the name was changed to Kwaishinsha Motorcar Co. and the name transferred to DAT Motorcar Co. in 1925. DAT Motors was known for offering trucks and passenger cars. With majority of sales coming from trucks, the passenger car sales of the company was pretty low. In 1926, DAT Motors joined hands with the Osaka-based Jitsuyo Jidosha Co., Ltd. to become DAT Automobile Manufacturing Company Limited until 1932.

Yoshisuke Aikawa founded a holding company Nippon Sangyo in 1928. The name Nissan came during 1930s as an abbreviation was used on the Tokyo Stock market for Nippon Sangyo. In 1931, DAT Motors introduced its new small car - the "Datson". In 1933, Nissan acquired DAT Motors and the last syllable of Datson was changed to "sun". During the world war, Nissan and Datsun developed vehicles for the Japanese army. Nissan signed a legal agreement with Austin UK to develop the Seven in Japan from 1952. For the next 15 years, Nissan produced cars under Austin Motor Company and developed engines for domestic market as well. The brand became quite popular in the American market, thanks to the 240Z Coupe.

USP

Nissan cars are known, globally, for their high performance and premium characteristics, though Indian buyers still favour budget and highly-fuel efficient cars. Therefore, the produced cars that offered both performance and high fuel efficiency while keeping their prices competitive. That is the reason why fuel efficient Nissan cars such as Sunny sedan and Micra hatchback became quite popular in a short span of time. Though almost all the Nissan cars are known for offering high mileage, the most fuel efficient Nissan Cars are - Evalia, Sunny and Micra.

Resale Value

The resale value of Nissan cars in India is decent; however, the resale value of cars from Honda, Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki are comparatively better. The low maintenance cost of Nissan cars also played an important role in the decent value of its cars in the used market.

Competition

Nissan Motor India is aiming to acquire 10 per cent market share in the Indian automotive industry; however, the competition level is very tough in the Indian car market. The company is facing stiff competition from the likes of Ford India, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra and Renault.
