Volvo XC60 car, which was launched in India on 24 November, 2010, is the perfect blend of power, performance and technology. The car was introduced in five variants out of which two are petrol and three are diesel. Engine power differs among the models due to which power and torque varies.

Volvo XC60 Launch History

Volvo XC60 car was first unveiled in the premier show at Geneva Motor Show on 4 March 2008. At its launch at Geneva Motors Show, the car was available with three engines of different configurations. Subsequently, Volvo officials announced that they are planning to launch a 2.4 L, diesel engine and front-wheel drive (FWD) version next year. Upon its domestic launch in November 2010, the auto maker imported the vehicle as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) from Belgium, with a price tag of around Rs. 39.50 lacs.

Volvo XC60 Variants

Volvo Group has launched five variants of Volvo XC60 in the international automotive market. These five variants include two petrol variants and three diesel variants. The diesel variants are Volvo XC60 2.4 D, 2.4 D DRIVe and D5 AWD and Volvo XC60 3.2 AWD and T6 AWD are the two petrol variants. All these variants are equipped with the same luxurious and safety features. However, the power generated differs among the models.

The new Volvo XC60 cars are provided with standard and optional features and equipment, which improve the efficiency. These features include Driver Alert Control (DAC), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Active Bending Lights (ABL), adaptive brake light, Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) and Intelligent Driver Information System (IDIS). Moreover, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with distance alert, Collision Warning with Auto Brake (CWAB), DSTC anti skid system and RSC active stability system are also available in new XC60 cars.

Some of the preventive features included in the car are Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), front fog lamps, side marker lamps and warning triangle. The Volvo XC60 cars are also equipped with reinforced passenger compartment, energy absorbing frontal structure, Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) and Roll Over Protection System (ROPS). Moreover, Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), head restraints for all seats, pre prepared restraints, anti-submarining protection and safety belts with pre-tensioners are available in the new XC60.

Some of the safety features included in the variants of new Volvo XC60 car are driver and passenger airbags, side airbags and inflatable curtains. Apart from these, energy absorbing interiors, collapsible steering column, lower cross-members, pedestrian protection, Volvo on call and first aid kit are also equipped in the car.

Volvo XC60 Interiors

Interiors of Volvo XC60 cars have cut-off switch, passenger air-bag, ISO-fix-outer position rear seat, emergency brake assist and emergency brake lights. Volvo XC60 Fuel Economy

Diesel variants of Volvo XC60 deliver better mileage as compared to the petrol variants. The Volvo XC60 2.4 D delivers an impressive mileage of 10.75 kmpl on the city roads and17.8 kmpl on highways. The Volvo XC60 2.4 D delivers a fuel economy of 14.4 kmpl. The Volvo XC60 2.4 D DRIVe provides a fuel average of 12.8 kmpl in city, whereas it delivers an impressive economy of 20 kmpl on the highways. However, Volvo XC60 2.4 D DRIVe provides an economy of 16.6 kmpl, which is impressive.

Volvo XC60 D5 AWD provides fuel economy of 9.8 kmpl on city roads and 18.4 kmpl on the highways. Moreover, Volvo XC60 D5 AWD delivers an impressive average of 13.3 kmpl. The petrol variants of Volvo XC60 also deliver a sufficient mileage, but lesser as compared to diesel variants. Petrol model of Volvo XC60 has two variants and have different engines. The Volvo XC60 3.2 AWD is incorporated with a 3192 cc engine, which produces maximum power of 238 bhp at 6200 rpm. Other petrol variant Volvo XC60 T6 AWD has a 2953 cc engine, which produces maximum power of 285 bhp at 5600 rpm.

Volvo XC60 Acceleration and Pick Up

Since all the models of Volvo XC60 are equipped with powerful engines, the rate of acceleration is also very high. Volvo XC60 2.4 D smoothly accelerates between 0 and 100 kmph within 10.2 seconds, whereas Volvo XC60 2.4 D DRIVe glides from 0 to 100 kmph within 9.8 seconds. The Volvo XC60 D5 AWD also accelerates very fast and reaches a speed of 100 kmph within 8.9 seconds.

The petrol variants are equipped with different engines, which provide different acceleration and pick up. Engine of Volvo XC60 3.2 AWD produces torque of 320 Nm at 3200 rpm, which affects the acceleration of the car. Volvo XC60 3.2 AWD smoothly accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph within 9.4 seconds. The Volvo XC60 T6 AWD is equipped with a 2953 cc engine, which produces a maximum torque of 400 Nm at a fairly low 1500-4800 rpm. With a high acceleration, the Volvo XC60 T6 AWD glides between 0 and 100 kmph within 7.5 seconds.

All the models of Volvo XC60 are equipped with standard safety features as well as few optional security features. The standard safety features include the basic alarm, interior movement sensor, level sensor, immobiliser, key integrated remote control, home safe lightning and central locking. Volvo XC60 Competitor Analysis

The increasing demand of Volvo XC60 in India has led to the entry of new automobile manufacturers in the same segment. Volvo XC60 cars's main competitors are Mercedes M-Class and Audi Q5. Engine incorporated in these cars has different configuration.

Mercedes M-Class is a diesel variant, which is launched in the D+ segment. It is incorporated with a V6 engine that has a displacement of 2987 cc. The maximum power generated by the engine is 234 bhp at 3800 rpm, whereas the maximum torque produced is 545 Nm at a fairly low 1600 rpm. The improved power of the engine enables the car to attain a top speed of 219 kmph, whereas it smoothly accelerates between 0 and 100 within 9.10 seconds.
