AB Volvo is a Swedish automaker, known for its sturdy and safe passenger vehicles as well its commercial vehicles like buses, trucks and construction equipments. Apart from that, Volvo supplies aerospace, marine and industrial drive systems. Volvo is a recent entry into the Indian car market but has ambitious plans for it.
Volvo History and Launch
Though Volvo was incorporated in 1915, the company started operations only in 1927, when it entered into car manufacturing business. The company introduced its first car Volvo OV4 series, which was manufactured in the Hisingn factory in Gothenburg. The company built 280 Volvo cars in its debut year.
In 1928, Volvo introduced its first truck ‘Series 1’, which was not only an instant success product within Volvo’s home country but became a hit even in outside countries. The company had sold 639 cars in 1930 and it increased its truck exports to Europe soon after that. In early 1929, the company launched its U-21 outboard engine, which was manufactured till 1962.In 1934, Volvo introduced its first bus named B1, and in 1935, Volvo made its debut at Stockholm stock exchange, listing the Volvo shares on the company exchange.
In the beginning years of the 1940s, Volvo also started to produce aircraft engines another addition to its product range. Between the years 1940 and 1950, the company launched the PV-60, which was a large car in American style. In 1944, the company introduced the new small car PV444, a Volvo car in American design but with European size. The Volvo PV444 became highly successful later and its production lasted more than two decades. Many trucks, taxis and ambulances were also made during this decade.
During 1950 to 1960, Volvo introduced cars like Volvo sports car P1900 and Volvo Duett 445. In 1957, the company started producing the Volvo 120, which is also called as Amazon in Scandinavia. In 1960, the Volvo P1800 was produced, lauded for its attractive design and won awards for its design. In 1964, the company launched a new plant in Torslanda, with the capacity to produce 110,000 units per annum.
A number of important launches took place further in this period. In 1966, the company launched the Volvo 144, which was an advanced car in terms of safety and this model was a successful model abroad also. Later, Volvo 145 was introduced, which was similar to other 140 models.In 1971, Volvo introduced the new version of P1800, which was called as P1800 ES. In 1975, Volvo introduced its new generation cars Volvo 240 and Volvo 260, the former came with six different models and the latter came with two different models.
In 1981, Volvo had become a large car exporter from Europe to United States, and in 1982, the company launched its new model Volvo 760 GLE. By the 80s and 90s, Volvo started launching cars in a higher speed, following a large acceptance of its cars in the market.Examples are the Volvo 850 GLT, which won more than 40 international awards, and the ubiquitous V70.
In 1999, Volvo was sold to Ford, the American Motor Company, for $6.45 billion. Though it represented a bit of hurt pride for the Swedes, it turned out a good thing for Volvo as the company started flourishing in this new millennium. In 2000, the company sold 4,22,100 units, which was a record. In 2002, Volvo released its Volvo SUV XC60 in America, which was awaited for long period.The last few years have seen constant launches from Volvo, with cars that have gradually become more stylish and impressive.In 2010, Volvo became part of Chinese auto group, Geely Motors. Management has assured that there will be no change in Volvo’s business and products.
Volvo Launch in India
Volvo manufacturing facilities in India were started in 1998, with its first production plant in India located at Hoskote, which is near Bangalore. The plant covers 122 acres and there are more than 1,000 people working in that plant. From the last decade, Volvo products are increasingly appreciated in the country and it has changed Indian commercial industry by series of advanced technology and new concepts.
Apart from that, Volvo has trained more than 14,000 bus and truck driver in India at its plant near Bangalore and at its regional centers.Besides the important commercial vehicle sector in India, where Volvo has both trucks and buses, Volvo also has started selling its passenger vehicles in India. Volvo cars in India are typically imported as CKD or CBU and not built in India, for now.
Founded in Sweden, Volvo’s founders were Assar Gabrielsson, a Swedish industrialist and a sales manager of SKF, and Gustav Larson, an engineer of SKF.Volvo founders Gustav Larson and Assar Gabrielsson had planned to construct Swedish car in the year 1924. They dreamt to build a car suiting for Swedish cold temperatures and rough roads. This way, Volvo brand and its products came to existence.
Volvo Dealer Network in India
Volvo has its dealership and service centers through out the country. Some of the famous Volvo dealers of major cities are – Talwar Cars in Hyderabad, Auto Kashyap India Private Limited in New Delhi, MFG Auto in Cochin, Shreenath Motors Private Limited in Mumbai, Planet Exklusiv in Pune, Bhagat in Mohali, Liv Cars Private Limited in Chennai.Presently, Volvo is yet modestly present in India and is looking to expand.
Volvo Used Car Market
Since Volvo still is of modest size in India, there are yet few used Volvo cars in the country. However, Volvo does have an advanced certified car programme abroad.A Volvo Certified Pre-owned vehicle passes through 130 Volvo certified inspections. Volvo CPO vehicles come with six year warranty that covers every part - components are repaired by Volvo expert engineers or it can be replaced by Volvo original parts. Volvo Future plans
Volvo plans to redesign Volvo S60 by refreshing its style, power and by adding new futures in 2011 Volvo S60. This is the premium-midsized car that comes with all-wheel drive in single T6 trim level. Turbocharged five-cylinder is replaced tp inline six-cylinder engine.Volvo also plans to facelift it C70 convertible in its 2011 C70 model. The new C70 2011 Volvo comes with the newly styled bumper and a wider grille and it will have new swoop headlamps and new tail lamps.
Volvo Car Models, Volvo variants, Volvo Prices
Volvo India has its operations throughout the country for busses, construction equipments, trucks, industrial power systems and marine goods. Currently, the company sells wagons and sedans in India. Volvo India’s models today are the Volvo S80, Volvo XC60 and Volvo XC90.
Volvo S80, a luxury sedan, comes in three variants with different types of engine models and one type of transmission (automatic) in India. Volvo S80 variants, features and their prices are – S80 D5 that comes with five-cylinder 2400 cc diesel engine and costs 38 lacs, Volvo S80 3.2 with a six-cylinder 3192 cc petrol engine at 39 lacs, and the Volvo S80 V8 AWD which comes with eight-cylinder 4414 cc petrol engine and it costs 44.50 lacs.
Volvo XC60, a mini SUV, is available in only one version. It comes with a 2400cc diesel engine with automatic transmission. The cost of Volvo XC60 is 40.5 lacs and the available colors of Volvo XC60 are Seashell metallic, flememco red metallic, Barents blue metallic, terra bronze metallic, silver grey metallic, cosmic white metallic, silver metallic, black sapphire metallic and Barents blue metallic. Volvo XC60 is an All Wheel Drive (AWD) model.
Volvo XC90, a larger SUV, comes in three versions in India with different types of engines. All the three versions are all wheel drive models. Volvo XC90 variants, features and its prices are – Volvo XC90 D5 AWD has five-cylinder and 2400 cc diesel engine and it costs 42.50 lacs, Volvo XC90 3.2 AWD comes with six-cylinder 3192 cc petrol engine and it costs 43.50 lacs, Volvo XC90 V8 AWD comes with eight-cylinder 4414 cc petrol engine and it costs 49.50 lacs.
