The Indian automobile industry has witnessed a sudden upsurge in the demand of compact Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs). Car makers have been actively switching their plans to produce more compact SUVs as it is sole segment that has not bore the brunt of slowdown prevalent in Indian car market at present. Talking about Nissan Motor India Private Limited, the company started its operations in the Indian auto market during 2005 and since then, it has been faring well among the price sensitive domestic buyers. With its X-Trail model, Nissan maintains its presence in the SUV segment but in the recent past, the car has not got a favourable response from buyers, thereby being unable to register good sales figures. To change this, the Japanese car maker decided to introduce a compact SUV named Terrano. The car was unveiled way before its launch, which helped the company to devise its marketing strategies accordingly. Nissan Terrano comes loaded with a power packed features and superlative engine performance that is apt for Indian roads. The car is offered in two fuel options, namely 1.5-litre diesel and 1.6-litre petrol. The design of the car mainly resembles to that of Renault Duster, its cousin. However, Nissan has managed to give a far more attractive appearance to Terrano as compared to its sibling. In terms of competition, the car is squaring off against the likes of Mahindra Quanto, Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster.
Nissan Terrano Launch History
In order to generate hype for Terrano, Nissan showcased its vehicle long before the car was launched in October. Till the time of launch, the company officially released each and every detail regarding Terrano but maintained silence on the price of the vehicle. Besides, another noticeable clause was that the price of such a re-badged version would be a touch expensive than the sibling. This prompted Nissan to price its car higher than its sibling Renault Duster. Apart from this instance, other re-badged versions of alliance between Nissan and Renault, including Micra - Pulse and Sunny - Scala, Terrano is completely different from its sibling. Currently, the car is being produced at the shared production facility at Chennai, which has an annual production capacity of 2 lakh units. It has been raking good sales number ever since its launch and as announced by the company, Terrano had received 6000 pre-bookings before its launch. However, the car did not match the demand shown by Ford EcoSport, which accounted for 30000 bookings in the first 17 days of the launch. According to industry experts, it is too early to compare the figures of Terrano with EcoSport as both the cars appeal to different set of audiences in the compact SUV segment. Nissan Terrano Competitor Analysis
As Nissan Terrano is a compact SUV, the competition for the car is intense as plenty of cars have already stemmed their position in the respective segment. Car makers like Ford, Renault and Mahindra & Mahindra have already launched their models long before Nissan and they are actively competing with each other. While for Nissan Terrano, it will face its toughest rivals in the form Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster. These two cars have made significant inroads in the Indian car market and have gained a large customer base in short span of time. Industry experts believe that Terrano could find it hard to outpace the demand of its competitors during the initial stages but the car poses a serious threat to the supremacy of the two.
Nissan Terrano Pros
Nissan Terrano strikes onlookers with its captivating look in the very first glance, as it bears close resemblance to the robust and rugged Renault Duster. However, Terrano's design cue is much more refined as against the Duster, which has a tough built. Unlike Renault's SUV, Terrano is slightly subtle and possess a grown up body structure. The powerful compact SUV of Nissan has been manifested with features aplenty to give its exterior a spectacular appearance. These include distinct body panels, headlamps that blend nicely into its grille and double lamp headlights. Adding to the Terrano's allure are features like a body coloured bumpers, antenna, body coloured outside rear view mirrors and silver finish outside door handle.
The compact SUV not only impresses buyers with its attractive exterior, but it has capacious interiors as well. Posh upholstery and dual tone colour scheme incorporated in Terrano, lends it a sophisticated and classic look. Terrano's interior has a premium feel and is abound with comfort oriented aspects, to lure customers. For enhanced comfort, it features luxuriant seats with lumbar, avant-grade air-conditioner, an air quality control, armrests, and more. A 2-Din Audio system is also integrated in Terrano, to cover the entertainment aspect.
The talk of a car is incomplete without mentioning about its engine, which vouches for its fuel efficiency. Both petrol and diesel engine based versions of Terrano are made available to buyers. The engine integrated in Nissan's compact SUV is extremely powerful that bolster an impressive performance. While the petrol variant offers 145Nm of peak torque value at 3750rpm and incorporates a 1.6-litre MPFI (multi point fuel injection) petrol engine, Terrano's diesel variant integrates 1.5-litre diesel engine with a peak torque of 248Nm at 2250rpm.
Nissan Terrano Cons
Despite its sophisticated features and impressive looks, Nissan Terrano lacks on certain grounds, which has hindered its establishment as one of the best in the segment. To start off, Terrano falls short in terms of fuel efficiency. The diesel variant of Nissan Terrano features engine in two states of tune- 83 bhp and 110 bhp motor and both gets turbo-lag. This in-turn makes revving troublesome. Other factors that have resulted in Terrano's stagnant market position are its low brand value and high pricing.
Nissan Terrano Conclusion
While concluding on Terrano, it must be said that the car has got the right mixture of power and comfort at the same time but it could have been much better if the manufacturer would have improved up on some aspects of the car. It has got a powerful engine and comes loaded with best-in-class features but the pricing and timing of the launch could have been much better. Although the car has few demerits, it is still doubted that would better the strong showing of Ford EcoSport as it priced aggressively. It is not doubted Terrano looks more mature and modern than its sibling but the question that arises is whether or not it is wise to pay the extra bucks for better appearance and safety. Nissan has certainly not lived up to the expectations on the pricing aspect, which could affect the success of Terrano in India. Besides to these, the car of Nissan has got the potential to overturn the market on its own in the coming time.
