Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is one of Japan’s largest automakers and in the top 20 of global automakers. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is the automobile division of the Mitsubishi Keiretsu Group, one of Japan’s largest industrial groups. Mitsubishi Company’s official headquarters are in Tokyo, Japan. Currently, Mitsubishi Motors has over 30 thousand employees, located all over the world.Mitsubishi is present in India in collaboration with Indian Hindustan Motors, and has a portfolio including SUVs (Mitsubishi Montero, Outlander and Pajero) and sedans (Lancer, Cedia, EVO-X). The company is known worldwide for performance cars as well, and the EVO-X is an exponent hereof.
Mitsubishi Motors Corporation was formed in April, 22, 1970 as a spin-off of the automotive wing of Mitsubishi Heavy industries. Mitsubishi’s automotive history dates back to 1917, when Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Company Limited launched its first car named ‘Mitsubishi Model-A’. In 1934, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) was formed from Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Company Limited which undertook the automobile production. As explained, this finally led to formation of Mitsubishi Motors.
In 1937, Mitsubishi unveiled a new prototype military-use four wheel drive passenger car called ‘PX33’. In the year 1950, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries was divided into 3 regional companies, namely West Japan heavy industries (Mitsubishi Shipbuilding & Engineering), East Japan heavy industries (Mitsubishi Nihon Heavy-Industries) and central Japan heavy industries (Shin Mitsubishi Heavy-Industries). Year later, East Japan Heavy Industries begun importing an inexpensive American car called Hendry J to Japan and distributing the same. Meanwhile, Central Japan Heavy (Shin Mitsubishi) industries signed a similar contract with Willis for the assembly of the Willis jeep.
In the early stages of 1960s, Shin Heavy-Industries introduced new cars like Mitsubishi 500, Minica kei car and Mitsubishi Colt 1000. In 1964, three regional companies merged back into Mitsubishi Heavy-industries. In the same year, a car named Debonair, a high-class passenger car, was launched, followed by the Mitsubishi Colt 1500, a passenger car. Then in 1969, Mitsubishi launched a new car named ‘Galant’.
On April, 22, 1970, Mitsubishi Motor Corporation (MMC) was formed as a wholly owned division of MHI under the leadership of Tomio Kubo. The company went on to attract investment of U.S. automotive giant Chrysler in 1971.
In the subsequent years, a number of launches followed. The famous ‘Lancer’ was launched in 1973, and three years later, cars named Galant Sigma and Galant Lamda were launched. In 1978, the ‘Mirage’ was launched.
Finally in 1980, Mitsubishi attained annual production of 1 million. This milestone was followed by a slew of launches, including the Eterna Sigma, Lancer EX1600 Turbo, Tredia, Cordia, and Starion.In the years to follow, Mitsubishi increased its focus on SUVs and performance vehicles. Today, the company’s cars are sold in over 160 countries. One of its key mascots is actor Jacky Chan, who uses Mitsubishi cars often in his movies.
Mitsubishi in India
Mitsubishi entered the Indian market in 1998 in a joint venture with Hindustan Motors. While the cars are sold under Mitsubishi’s label, Hindustan Motors is responsible for distribution of the cars.

Mitsubishi Used car market
Mitsubishi cars have established their name in the Indian market. Mitsubishi cars are relied on by many people in India because of their utility, low cost maintenance and looks. Since Japanese giant Mitsubishi is a global brand in cars and heavy industries, Mitsubishi cars also have good resale value. Mitsubishi Future plans
In the future, Mitsubishi plans to launch a newer and better version of its top selling sport utility vehicle (SUV) in India, Mitsubishi Pajero. Hindustan Motors, distributors of Mitsubishi cars in India, have announced that they are targeting sales of ten thousand units for the current fiscal year against two thousand two hundred units sold previous year.
While the company is operating for over a decade in India, Mitsubishi has not introduced a compact car yet which affects its market share.
Till now, Mitsubishi has presence only in premium sport utility vehicle (SUV) and upper mid size sedan segment.According to sources, Mitsubishi is thinking of introducing its first compact car in India, codenamed as ‘eco car’, which the company is building first for the Thailand market. Mitsubishi plans to alter the car to the Indian situation and to launch the car in the first half of 2012, though there is no formal confirmation yet of this project.
Mitsubishi Models in India
As explained before, Mitsubishi sells the sedans Lancer, Cedia and Lancer Evo X in India, and the Mitsubishi SUVs Pajero, Outlander and Montero are also sold in India.
Mitsubishi Lancer is a family car designed by Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, in the premium C sedan segment. Lancer is a neat looking sedan and is well proportioned in dimensions and power. 7 million Lancers have sold from 1973 to 2007, globally.The Lancer is considered innovative in design. The car has a vertical front grill. Car’s advantages are its rally-image and its stylish look and the Lancer comes with attractive door trims with fabric inserts. The seats in the Lancer are quite supportive and offer comfort. Interior of the Lancer is spacious and allow generous space to keep the luggage.The Lancer is available in petrol and diesel, with pricing between 4 and 6 lacs. Mitsubishi Cedia is a next version of the Mitsubishi Lancer. This C segment model was launched in 2006 and is one of the stylish sedans of the country. Mitsubishi Cedia exterior is trendy as it has a stylistic cut and its exterior is equipped with wide halogen headlamps, 6-spoke alloy wheels and so on. The Lancer’s interior is occupied with door pads, four-spoke steering wheel, gear knob, cup-holders, arm rest, trendy instrumental cluster and so on.Mitsubishi Cedia is available in four variants, viz. Mitsubishi Cedia Sport, Mitsubishi Cedia Elegance, Mitsubishi Cedia Select LPG and Mitsubishi Cedia SPIRIT. Mitsubishi Cedia prices range between 9 lacs and 10.5 lacs.
Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution or Mitsubishi Lancer Evo is a luxury sports sedan of high performance. This model was launched in 2007 and in India it was introduced in November 2010. Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X has an aggressive shark-faced front exterior with 18 inch alloy wheels and the other features of its exterior are a short pole 200mm antenna, large side air dams, aluminum rear spoiler and so on. It has a luxurious interior with a comfortable seat, which is covered with techno-suede leather. Apart from that it is equipped with SRS airbags, ACD, ABS and so on.Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X comes with one variant. It has 1998 cc petrol engine with manual transmission. Its price ranges from 50 lacs onwards.
Mitsubishi Montero comes under SUV category and it was launched in India in 2006. The Indian version of Mitsubishi Montero is fully packed and it is exactly similar to international Mitsubishi Montero. It has a powerful engine that assures to give commendable high speed.Mitsubishi Montero exterior is durable and sturdy and it is equipped with xenon headlamps, front grille with chrome coated, sporty front and rear wheel cover and so on.
Mitsubishi Montero interior is luxurious, comfort and spacious and its seating is impressive as the second row seats are foldable and the third row seats are completely removable.Mitsubishi Montero is available in two variants with 3200cc diesel engine. Mitsubishi Outlander was launched in 2001 in Japan. However, in India it was launched only in 2008. This Sports Utility Vehicle is ideal for adventure-filled traveling and it assure to give high performance both in off and on road. Mitsubishi Outlander is a tough competitor in its categories. Its exteriors are muscular and come with large wheel arches. Apart from that it has sturdy bumper with deep-set headlamps. Mitsubishi Outlander interior is also luxurious like other Mitsubishi cars. It is equipped with 650 Watts Rockford Fosgate Music System. Mitsubishi Outlander is available in one version, the Mitsubishi Outlander 2.4 MIVEC, which is equipped with 2360cc petrol engine with automatic transmission. The price of Mitsubishi Outlander is 20.27 lacs.
The Mitsubishi Pajero is a 4-wheel drive SUV. The Pajero has been around now for many years but it continues to maintain its presence. The Pajero looks purposeful, handsome and balanced. Today, Mitsubishi Pajero is the best selling sport utility vehicle for Mitsubishi Motors. The Pajero looks like a rough but good looking car. Some important features of exterior are a stand out grille, roof rails, back spare wheel, unique double color and Sidebar. The purposeful look of Pajero is a big advantage for the car.
Inside, the Mitsubishi Pajero offers supreme level of comfort and the leather seats are well designed. The Pajero has roomy, sporty cockpit with dual tone interiors.
