Mercedes Benz GLA
The Mercedes-Benz motors revealed glimpse of the latest offering Mercedes-Benz GLA, up against the likes of Audi Q3 and Range Rover Evoque. The GLA has been made public ahead of its planned formal debut at the 2013 Shanghai motor show. The first glance of the car is an all new compact Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) that will be up for sales in the early phase of the next year in the Indian auto market. It must be noted that the upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLA has shared the designing platform from A-Class and is powered by the same four-cylinder engine.
Front plus four-wheel drive models are expected to be on offer and a GLA45 AMG model with the same turbocharged 355 bhp engine as the CLA 45 AMG and A45 AMG is likely to be provided. Having roughly the same size proportions as the Evoque, the upcoming model from three pointed star will be 438 cm in length and 158 cm in height. According to the company's naming conventions, the car's attributes has been described as “softcubes” - soft, raised pads that “help give definition” to the radiator grille, side sills and exhaust tailpipes. Big curvature along the sides are some of the features that GLA shares common to A-Class and the CLA saloon.
Post launch, the main competition for the Mercedes-Benz GLA will come from the likes of 2015 BMW X1, and the Audi Q3, which the company plans to road in 2014. With regard to BMW X1, which had a pleasure run globally, when it was made public in Europe back in 2009, it was pretty much a unique model, but things have changed quite a lot since then. Furthermore, BMW now has already started its work to soon come up with a second-generation X1, which they expect to arrive by time the new GLA will be put on sale. BMW's main concentration will be to refresh both exteriors as well as the interiors, while the current engine line-up will receive numerous modifications in order to reduce the vehicle's fuel usage.
On the other hand, the Q3 is a comparatively new model for the market, but even then, lot many customers have turned their focus from the X1 to Audi's latest offering, the compact SUV. The car is offered in three engine options, which include one TDI and two TFSI units with power outputs values in the range 140 bhp to 211 bhp. Its engine is clubbed with direct fuel injection, turbocharging, a start-stop system and an new add-on in the form of an energy recovery system.
There are constant reports for several years on Mercedes-Benz's plans to add to its kitty an all new compact crossover based on its 'MFA' small car platform, which presently exist in latest A-Class and B-Class models. Interestingly, all these models are already present on roads in the international auto markets as well as the 2014 CLA Class four-door coupe that got released in the United States. Then the company came up with a compact crossover in July 2013, declaring the production of its new A-Class that the MFA platform will eventually span five different models, which include the crossover.
In the recent spy pictures of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLA, the outer design of the model more clearly showcased with previous thick plastic cladding now absent, in its place, a simple looking black and white camouflage has been put into place. The shape reflects the kind one would expect from a compact Mercedes-Benz crossover, though with enhanced haunches and a more open looking roof. An arched roof line has been fitted in the upcoming model, having a sudden slope at the rear which provides an almost hatchback-like feeling. On the other hand when we look at the earlier clicks of the GLA Class showed it testing in taxi cab form, complete with a sign on the roof top, with camouflage still intact. Much of the car's finer definition's kept hidden, but the basic feel was totally clear, combining some of the European A-Class's styling with the more crossover-like posture.
The company has not disclosed any specific name for the crossover model; however, some sources hinted that the name GLA Class are taking rounds, which is believed to go on sale towards the last phase of the year, to be released as a 2014 model. Its main rivalry is expected to come from the likes of Range Rover Evoque, BMW X1, soon coming Lincoln MKC and, to a lesser degree, from the MINI Countryman, where the only deviation coming is that the the GLA is made sporty in looks than the crossover already prevailing in the market. The engines, however, are sourced from the current A and B-Class versions. To state this other-way round, one should expect from the GLA to look fast, but there is a slight let down as the car does not go so very fast (for that one has to go for the powerful AMG version offered by the auto maker).
Some of the images revealed that the styling is similar to the one found in A-Class hatchback, however, the vehicle is slightly broader with more pronounced grille. From the car's graphics, especially at the tail light, we can observe that this version has some elements common to the A-Class and latest release CLA. The car's base engine in the U.S. is believed to be the same turbocharged 2-litre four-cylinder, which is present in the CLA. Rated at 208 bhp and 350 Nm of torque. Thanks to the improved technology, the drive can be conveniently transferred to either the front or all four wheels by using the seven-speed dual clutch transmission.
The soon to be released GLA-Class has been found on test runs many a times, openly on public roads and by some on the famous Nurburgring race track. When compared to its current counterpart offered by Mercedes-Benz, namely the GLK, the smallest SUV in its kitty, the GLA's body is much rounder in appearance. Also, if you place it parallel to the A-Class what you will experience is a beefier and more muscular front end, considerably more tilted back side window, and, of course, a higher ride height. The AMG version will house a more pronounced and aggressive feel with dual exhaust pipes, bigger wheels and cross drilled brakes.
According to company policy, not every market will receive the same unit, bifurcated based on the power needs, which is true for both petrol as well as diesel variants. Another version namely AMG, most likely to be labelled as GLA45 AMG is also in the rounds. This particular model comes with the same turbocharged 2.0 litre four-cylinder churning out 330 BHP that also comes fitted in A45AMG and CLA45 AMG models. The inside feel of the GLA is somewhat similar in nature to that of the CLA Class. That includes the standard Bluetooth, cruise control feature, powered driver seat and MB-Tex trim. Mercedes-Benz has also made it a standard to provide a 5.8 inch monitor screen with COMAND interface, where a 7.0 inch is also on offer if the user demands.
The multimedia section of the car has in its kitty a DVD changer, 10 GB music drive, backup camera and voice controller. Still its not done as the company is always toiling to come up with the best in class features, so stay connected to get the latest news on development with regards to the GLA. In order to facilitate the acceptance of a new crossover, Mercedes-Benz's present model, the GLK Class, is believed to grow in proportions for its upcoming generation.
Engine of Mercedes-Benz GLA
The Mercedes-Benz GLA is expected to come equipped with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine, which will have the potential to churn out a maximum power of 208 bhp and 349 Nm of peak torque. With regards to production, the company has plans to provide the same line-up as we have seen in the A-Class, which means we will see an option of both gasoline and diesel-run engines, with power in the range 134 bhp to 208 bhp in the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine. Mercedes-Benz also plans to offer an AMG version, that will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine expected to deliver 360 bhp and peak torque of 450 Nm. Every engine will be clubbed with a standard six-speed manual gearbox with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic offered as an additional option.
Exteriors, Interiors and safety features of Mercedes-Benz GLA
In terms of looks the distinguishing factor in GLA concept is the pronounced and powerful bonnet, along with the sporty grille and the large roof spoiler kept at the rear end, which provides the car an overall muscular and sporty look. From what we have observed from some of the leaked web clicks, these features will surely be integrated into the production model, but it is somewhat clear that the company will tone them down, but will still be kept recognisable. The differences that are expected between the production and concept versions are classier looking upper grille and lower air intake, more traditional side view mirrors, along with body coloured door handles.
The interior exhibited in the concept is way overboard to be put into assembly/production. However, the GLA-Class has a custom fit instrument panel broken into two different sections, a three-spoke steering wheel with 12-function buttons, a display screen with a black piano lacquer-look main panel and silver coloured flush fitting. Keeping no stones unturned when it comes to the quality of fabrics and materials, Mercedes-Benz has on offer the best possible quality, along with a broad selection of leather and woods, plus an additional carbon fibre and Alcantara for the special AMG version.
The new GLA-Class is a must for the brand with three point star to stay updated with the current market trend. If the production model is mostly kept as it is, with what is being offered in the concept version, then the GLA is expected to be a real success. The production version of the GLA is to appear at the LA Motor Show at a later phase of the coming year, before putting it up for sale in the early part of 2014. The GLA version which will be soon put on sale, is expected in the year 2014. With the actual prices to be released sometime later. In Europe, it will act as a replacement for the current left hand drive only as Mercedes-Benz discontinued the GLK crossover, but will enter by making a new parallel segment when it will be introduced in the UK.
