Maybach Company was founded as Luftfahrzeug-Motorenbau GmbH (Aircraft Engine Building Company) in the year 1909. Karl Maybach, son of Wilhelm Maybach, was director of this venture.

Production was halted during WW II, which was resumed 20 years later, when Daimler-Benz acquired the company in 1960. Mercedes-Benz introduced Mercedes-Benz Maybach (V12, 5987 cc, and 550 hp) at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1997. Thereafter, Mercedes-Benz has been engaged in producing and marketing ultra-luxury cars in the name of Maybach.
