Maserati, the renowned Italian car manufacturer is based in Modena. This company holds expertise in manufacturing various types of sports cars and racing cars. Maserati company with its exclusive range of cars provides tough competition to Jaguar, Astro Martin, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW. Since 1993, the Maserati company is owned by Italian car giant Fiat S.P.A. However, this company was further purchased by Ferrari in 1999. Two famous models were introduced by Ferrari known as the Quattroporte and the MC12. The high luxury saloon Quattroporte was launched in the market with a V8 engine. Gran Turismo is the latest model of this company, which could be the basis of all future cars of this brand. However, the company is planning to launch a convertible model of the Gran Tourismo car.
The manufacturer of lust-worthy exotics “Maserati” was founded in 1914 in Italy by six brothers namely Alfieri, Mariao, Carlo, Ernesto, Bindo and Ettore. All Maserati brothers were racing enthusiasts, who wanted to design car for private use. On a statue of the mythological god Neptune in a Bologna square, Mario based the trident emblem of the company. Several record-setting racers were produced by Maserati throughout the 1930s, which included V4, with its 16-cylinder engine and 8C 2500. During the great depression, the Maserati brothers sold their shares to the Orsi family and shifted the headquarters of the company to Modena.
Maserati company produced spark plugs, machine tools, electric vehicles during World War II. At the end of the conflict, they again started manufacturing racing cars and introduced A6 1500. With various car models such as Tipo 60 and 61 "Birdcage", the automobile giant continued to rack up impressive racing victories. Until the A-6 coupe, Maserati did not start building road cars. In the mid-1950s, the company launched 3500 GT, which was fitted with a double-overhead-cam inline. The first four door sedan of the company Quattroporte was launched in the year 1968.
This was a crucial year as the Orsi family shares was bought by French auto maker Citroen. Before the global gas crisis took momentum, various Maserati cars were produced in the early 70s like Bora, Merak, and Khamsin. The company was purchased in 1975 by Alejandro de Tomaso, an Argentinean. After making the purchase, he introduced anew Maserati model known as Quattroporte III, which was a four door sedan. In 1980, the main model of Maserati, Biturbo was considered unreliable and the company had to stop importing cars in U.S. The company was further purchased by Fiat in 1993. Until the factory was closed for refurbishing, the production of Biturbo continued till 1993. After the factory was restarted Maserati company produced the four-seat Coupe and the two-seat Spyder roadster. With the use of an F-1 style gear box, powerful V8 engine and styling by Giugiaro, the reputation of Maserati cars was enhanced in the US market. Maserati was split from Ferrari in 2005 but was within the Fiat fold. The luxury sports sedan was introduced in the year 2005. Few years’ later GranTurismo coupe and convertible was introduced, which enhanced the brand image of the company.

The production of racing cars was suspended by Diatto in 1926 leading to the creation of Maserati. Alferi won the 1926 Targa Florio by driving one of the first Maserati company car. With 4, 6, 6 and 16 cylinders, Maserati began making race cars. Based on one the Fontana del Nettuno, Bologna, the company's trident emblem was devised by Mario. After the death of Alfieri Maserati in 1932, the other Maserati brothers kept on making new cars, which won races.

Indian automobile market welcomed another member, Maserati in April 2011. This Italian exotic carmaker and Ferrari’s sister company has immense international reputation. Sheyan group brought Maserati in India like Ferrari. Maserati company in India plans to open the first showroom in Mumbai by the end of this year. Another showroom will be opened by the company in the national capital New Delhi in early 2012. Maserati car price range starts from Rs. 1.2 crore and goes up to Rs. 1.43 crore. The models of Maserati comprise Gran Cabrio Convertible, Gran Turismo Coupe, and the four-door Quattroporte sports sedan. Maserati has positive hopes for Quattroporte as it is considered to be the best choice for Indian conditions. Manufacturing facilities (Plants In India): Maserati company in India does not have any production unit. The production unit of Maserati company is situated in Modena, Italy from where the car is exported. Spread in sprawling area of 40,000 m², the manufacturing unit of Maserati is equipped with latest facilities. In order to raise the quality and production standard, the production line have been entirely modernised. The plant of Maserati company has 26 workstations on which GranTurismos and Quattroporte are built. Before being exported, every single car is tested on the basis of various parameters. At Ferrari’s Maranello headquarter, highly skilled personnel assemble the engines fitted to GranTurismo and Maserati Quattroporte. In the area, where Ferrari engines are assembled, the lightweight (184 kg) eight cylinder V90° engines are produced.

This car featured a double-wishbone suspension, electro hydraulic manual transmission and a Ferrari-designed, normally aspirated V8. With Ferrari's "F1" automated-clutch manual transmission, the Cambiocorsa unit has design similarity. There is no clutch pedal and gearshifts can be easily made through paddle shifter. On this car there is a "Skyhook" active suspension. According to various roads and driving conditions, the stiffness of the suspension is adjusted by this system. The car has a 9-inch-longer wheelbase, which makes it suitable for all types of road condition. Some standard features of Maserati Coupe include automatic climate control, dual power seats with driver memory and 18-inch alloy wheels. Inspite of the advantages, the Maserati Coupe was discontinued in the year 2007.
Maserati GranSport was unveiled at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show. It is the modified version of Spyder and Coupé. The car is loaded with a chrome mesh grille, aerodynamic body cladding and carbon fiber interior trim. With a 0.4 inch (10 mm) lower ride height, the car uses the Skyhook active suspension. The car is loaded with 4244 cc, 90° V8 petrol engine. It also has six-speed paddle shift transmission. The overall length, height and width of the car are 4,520 mm, 1,300 mm and 1,820 mm respectively.
The Maserati GranSport is another discontinued model from the house of Maserati. Available as two-seat convertible and four-seat coupe, this car was a style piece. The car is equipped with automatic climate control, dual power seats with driver memory, an alarm system and a power tilt and telescopic steering wheel. Some other highlighting features of this car include 19-inch wheels, mesh grille, lowered suspension (10 mm) and aerodynamic tweaks. From the safety point, Maserati GranSport is extremely reliable. Further, the car comes with traction control, antilock brakes, stability control and side airbags.
Maserati Upcoming Cars:
Maserati company has two concept cars known as GranTurismo MC Concept and Birdcage 75th. Based on the GranTurismo S launched at Geneva, the MC Concept is designed. Significant changes have been made regarding the design and performance of the car. The suspension settings of the car have also been improved to a great extent. Brake system of the car is upgraded to withstand stresses. The dedicated instrumentation, specific electrical system and indispensable safety device makes the car complete. However, the launch of this car is not yet conformed by the Maseraticompany.
Maserati GranCabrio Sport is another most trendy car which is about to hit the market. The car is loaded with an all-alloy naturally aspirated 4.7-litre V8 engine mated with the ZF 6-speed automatic gearbox. Power, which is generated by this engine, is 450 hp. Further, the engine is capable of generating torque of 510 Nm. The company is also ready to launch its first SUV in the market, which would be loaded with 6.4-litre, 465-hp engine borrowed from the Grand Cherokee. With the launch of this SUV, Maserati company aims to establish its strong hold in the SUV market.
Sheyan group is the only dealer of Maserati in India. However, the company has plans to open a showroom in Mumbai by the end of this year.
Maserati's market is spread across the globe. Maserati reported €586 million in revenues for 2010 which was around 30.8% more than 2009. The Quattroporte, GranTurismo and GranCabrio are responsible for the increasing sales performance. During the year a total of 5,675 cars were delivered to the network. In USA, which is the largest market of Maserati, 2,000 units were delivered. According to Maserati company information, the sales volume increased 45% more than the previous year. In United Kingdom and China, sales volume increased by 72% and 128%. The trading profit of the company was €24 million, which was more than double the trading profit of €11 million, which was attained in 2009.For Q4 2010, Maserati reported €151 million in revenues. €8 million trading profit was attained for the quarter, compared to €5 million for the fourth quarter of the year 2009.
Maserati Used Car Market:
With good resale value, Maserati has occupied an important place in the used car market. In USA, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark and France, there are many used models of Maseratiavailable. However, it is very difficult to find used Maserati car in India. These cars are possessed in India by only few renowned personalities. Purchasing a used Maserati car would be a wise decision as one can save some money.
Maserati Future Plans:
With an aim to rule the SUV market, Maserati have plans to introduce the concept version of SUV in Frankfurt. The company is planning to launch three new models as of now which will include two sedans and one SUV. In order to compete with the BMW M5 and Audi A7, the company is ready to develop a sports sedan. With a price tag of $75,000, the car will be Maserati’s entry level version. The replacement for a Quattroporte is confirmed by Maserati Company. Till 2014, the convertible and the GranTurismo coupe will remain in their current form. It is expected that this car will attract a 10 per cent share of high end E-segment of Europe. In India, the company will start its first showroom in Mumbai. However, the second showroom will be set up in Delhi in 2012.
50% share of Maserati company was sold by Fiat to the arch rival Ferrari in the year 1999. Replacing the existing vintage facility, a new factory was built by Ferrari in the year 1999. Due to the stopping of agreement between General Motors and Fiat in 2005, Maserati was brought under Fiat's control by separating from Ferrari.
Recently an agreement was signed between Maserati and Volkswagen, the German company for sharing Audi division's Quattro all wheel drive technology. By using this technology, Maserati’s current Quattroporte will be benefited.
The Maserati badge is mere municipal pride like Alfa. Trident of Maserati company cars is the traditional symbol of Bologna.
