Maruti Suzuki YL1
The tremendous growth potential of Indian car market has made it a viable operation place for any auto maker in the world. In a country like India, which has a large customer base, every major car company seems to stem its roots for growth prospects. A few would be unaware of the fact that the Indian car market is dominated by Maruti Suzuki India Limited, which is known as the largest passenger car maker of the country. The company shares a long history in India since 1981 and over the years it has come a long way to become the leading car manufacturer of the country. The main selling points for the company are its fuel economy and low pricing, which have mainly contributed to its overwhelming success.
At present, Maruti Suzuki claims to produce over 1.5 million cars per annum from its two state-of-art facilities at Manesar and Gurgaon. According to the statistics presented by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the auto maker currently holds a market share of around 40 per cent in the Indian car market. The main contributor to the success of the company has been its strong dealership and service network, which spans over 840 cities. Since its inception till now, the company has manufactured almost all kinds of vehicles whether be an entry-level hatchback or performance oriented Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV). As of now, the company manufactures 16 cars that have over 150 variants. Some of the most prolific cars of the company like Swift, Ritz, WagonR and Alto have received critical acclaim from industry experts for superlative engine performance and better fuel efficiency.
In mid-size sedan segment, Maruti Suzuki maintains its presence through Swift DZire and SX4 models. On talking about the sales of the respective sedans of the company, Swift DZire has garnered a lot of buyers and is currently the best-selling car of the company. On the other hand, the sales of SX4 are in stark contrast to DZire and the model has been constantly featuring on the list of low grossing cars for Maruti Suzuki. SX4 was launched in Indian car market in 2007 and since then it has gone undergone many changes in the engine and design section. Despite the fact that SX4 is available in petrol, diesel and CNG versions, the car has not lived up to the expectation of the company and the buyers. Priced at Rs. 7.21 lakh for the base variant and Rs. 9.79 lakh for the top-end one, the company was not able to justify the pricing of SX4 as it had considerably less features as compared to its rivals. Even the audiences in India did not seem to like the broad overall design of the car that was mainly overlooked by the young masses.
If rumours are to be believed, the leading car company is planning to replace the current generation SX4 model with new sedan named as YL1. However, it is not yet known that the YL1 sedan is a replacement of the SX4 or the leading car company is planning to sell the SX4 alongside it. As reports have emerged about Maruti Suzuki's deciding to curl its plans of producing SX4 owing to its low sales, the company might infuse new blood in the sedan segment so as to rival other companies. It is being learnt that Maruti Suzuki has been actively working on an all-new model named YL1 for quite some time now. The car is believed to take styling cues from the Authentic Concept, which was showcased by the parent company Suzuki at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show. Maruti Suzuki YL1 is expected to be first unveiled at the 2014 Auto Expo, which is scheduled to be held in Greater Noida from 6th February. After its showcasing, the launch of Maruti Suzuki YL1 will soon follow in the second quarter of 2014.
Engine & Specification of Maruti Suzuki YL1
The upcoming model of Maruti Suzuki might get the same engine as provided in the current generation SX model. However, doubts still remain over this claim as sources are saying that Maruti Suzuki might insist on tuning the engines differently. It is widely accepted that YL1 will be available in petrol and diesel fuel options. So it is presumed that the petrol variant will be equipped with a 1.4-litre K-Series engine having an ability to generate 94 bhp of power and 130 Nm of torque. Apart from it, the diesel engine of upcoming YL1 model might get the 1.3-litre Fiat Multijet turbo powertrain that can produce
90 bhp of peak output while generating a torque of up to 200 Nm. Both the engine options are in all likelihood will be mated to a 5-Speed manual transmission while for automatic gearbox, industry experts are saying that it will be available in India at a later stage. Apart from it, as seen in current generation SX4 model, a CNG version of the Maruti Suzuki YL1 might be offered in the Indian car market but at a later stage. In terms of fuel efficiency, the YL1 is expected to offer good fuel economy as the car might be provided with lighter engines as compared to SX4. Apart from having significantly lower kerb weight, the new sedan is shall be built on lighter chassis frame as compared to the SX4. The suspension setup now features anti-roll bars that are provided at the front and rear part of the vehicle.
Exterior, Interior and Safety features of Maruti Suzuki YL1
At the Shanghai Motor Show, Suzuki showcased the Authentics concept that was mainly designed to give the C-segment sedans a new look. Through the concept, the company focussed on retaining the sportiness quotient of cars by designing a low stance and long wheelbase besides the curved body structure and sharp running creases. Also, the company indicated that the production model that will be inspired from this concept will be launched in China by 2014. According to industry experts, that model will be next generation SX4 sedan, which the parent company of Maruti Suzuki shall be offering in South Asian market only.
Coming back to India, the upcoming YL sedan might be based on the same platform as previously shown by the parent company. The car might get a long hood and the front bumpers are said be far more sporty and edgy. On the side of the vehicle, it will have a sharp shoulder line that would be stretching till the rear end of it. However, it will be interesting to see whether Maruti Suzuki gives a large ground clearance in YL1 or will it adhere to giving the car a low stance as seen in Authentics Concept. At the rear end, the upcoming sedan will get wider and longer tail lamps. The dimensions of the car slated to increase thereby creating a more space on the inside of the vehicle. The leg room offered for rear passengers would be far more as compared to existing SX4 sedan.
In terms of features, Maruti Suzuki is all likely to include a set of advanced functionalities in the YL1 in order to lure loyal buyers of other companies. The car of Maruti Suzuki shall get advanced security features like Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution(EBD). Out of all features the thing that can surprise a few might be the new micro-hybrid system that will be having brake-energy regeneration functionality. The feature might be provided on the higher trim levels of YL1 only. It is being said that steering wheel configuration and suspension setup is particularly adjusted to give an outright ride comfort aimed at targeting the younger generation of customers.
In case of trim levels the upcoming model will be available in traditional line-up of variants such as LXi, VXi, ZXi, LDi, VDi and ZDi. For the top-end variants, a set of 16-inch wheels will be provided whereas in case of base trim levels like LXi and LDi, the company shall provide the normal 15-inch ones.
Coming to the interiors of the YL1, Maruti Suzuki is expected to provide two-tone beige and black coloured ones that will wooden inserts to further enhance the look of the car from inside. However, doubts still remain over the inclusion of these features in the mid and lower level trim levels of YL1 sedan. According to industry experts, the company might borrow some components of premium model Kizashi in order to give some exclusivity to YL1 sedan. The upcoming car of Maruti Suzuki might be a fully loaded one as reports have suggested that YL1 will roll out having advanced functionalities. The long list of features consists of a push start/stop button, rear air-conditioning vents, adjustable tilt steering wheel and electronically adjustable mirrors. It is also being leant that Anti-lock Braking System and front airbags are expected to be standard across the range.
The company might provide the same steering and the controls mounted on it as given in Kizashi. Also to mention, the instrument cluster panel present on the dashboard will get the same look as given in Kizashi. However, the company will provided YL1 with a new music system having a colour display screen that is compatible with USB and AUX-in support. Also to give a sense of luxury, the car will be seen having chrome door handles and accents around the edges of air-conditioning vents.
In terms of price, the current generation SX4 model is offered at an introductory ex-showroom Delhi price of Rs. 7.21 lakh which further goes up till Rs. 9.79 lakh for the top-end variant. As far as price of YL1 is concerned, it will be priced higher as compared to SX4 model and might carry a price tag of Rs.8 lakh for the introductory variant.
As far as the expected launch date of YL1 is concerned, the car might make inroads in India soon after it’s unveiling at the 2014 Auto Expo. With its upcoming sedan, Maruti Suzuki would be aiming to cut in the market share of Nissan Sunny and Hyundai Verna. Since the arrival of major auto makers, the mid-size sedan segment has become all more competitive and the leading car company might be banking on YL1 in order to regain the lost grounds. With a new design concept that is aimed at giving sportiness to the car, things might well work in favour of YL1 but its real competition come from the next generation Honda City that too will be provided in a diesel version.
Keeping in mind about the recent launch of Stingray model, which is a sportier version of WagonR, Maruti Suzuki seems to be directing all its efforts towards attracting the younger generation to buy their vehicles. The YL1 sedan shall face competition from the formidable rivals like Nissan Sunny, Renault Scala and Hyundai Verna. According to industry experts, the upcoming car of Maruti Suzuki will ride on the kind of goodwill that it has made over the years in India.
