Maruti Suzuki India launched the revamped version of the WagonR 'The blue eyed boy' with added bells and whistles in 2013. The new model has improved exterior, interior and advanced features. Its predecessor was one of the top selling models in the country, and the new and improved model will further help the company enhance its sales in the market. The company has revamped the overall looks of the car to give it a more modern appearance. The new WagonR features a narrower front grille incorporated with large bumpers and wide air dams, new sporty fog lamps, single horizontal trip with chrome enhancements, blue tinted headlights and some others. The side profile of the car now looks sportier, thanks to the slanted roof with roof-rails. The tyres look very frail and small, which surely affects the overall stance of the car.
Inside the cabin, the new WagonR feels more spacious and the updated upholstery makes it comfortable. The dual tone colour scheme (Beige & Black) offers a more contemporary look. The top-of-the line variant comes equipped with several advanced features such as audio system with integrated AUX-in and USB ports, electric ORVM, tilt adjustable electronic power steering, climate control unit, 60: 40 spilt rear folding seat, high quality upholstery. The company has also considered the safety of the occupants and car and introduces the new WagonR loaded with a number of safety features such as Anti Lock braking system, airbags, front and rear ELR seat belts, the Intelligent Computerized Anti Theft System and others.
The new Maruti WagonR is being offered in both petrol and CNG version. The petrol version is powered with the 1.0-litre Kb 10, 3-cylinder mill that churns out a top power of 67.1bhp and 90Nm of torque. This motor displaces 998cc and delivers good fuel efficiency. Power is transmitted to front wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The eco-friendly CNG model of the car is mated with the Intelligent Gas Port Injection (i-GPI) i-fuel technology, which makes it more fuel efficient. This powertrain develops 58.2bhp of top power and 77Nm of torque.
The entry level Maruti WagonR is priced at Rs. 3.64 lakh, while the top-of the line model is tagged at Rs. 4.53 lakh. The only CNG variant- LXI CNG costs Rs. 4.50 lakh. All the prices are ex-showroom, New Delhi.
The changes and added features enhance the overall appearance of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR, but it still lacks the apeal that others in competition offer. The front façade of the car comes loaded with new narrow front grille with chrome touches, large bumper with wide airdam, new bigger headlamps, sporty fog lamps and blue tinted parking lamps. Maruti claims that the new grille has reduced the NVH levels, however, it is still on higher side. The body coloured bumpers and ORVMs further enhance the overall styling of the small car.
The slanting roof with body coloured roof-rails give a sporty feel to the car. Its wheel arches are smartly designed, but the small sized tyres fail to attract. The rear end also gets chrome detailing and the "WagonR" is embossed on the chrome strip. Its rear windscreen is wider than before and features a larger tail-lamps.
The top of the line VXi variant of new WagonR features 14-inch wheels, whereas, the entry level and mid variants get the 13-inch wheels. Puncture resistant tyres are given to the car, which works decently. The high end variant has a tyre size of 155/65 R14, whereas the other variants sport 145/80 R13 size of tyres.
The new Maruti WagonR measures 3595mm in length x 1495mm (VXi with side moulding) and 1475mm (entry level model) in width x 1700mm in height. Wheelbase of 2400mm offers enough space to accommodate five adults comfortably. The new WagonR has a ground clearance of 162mm, which is sufficient enough to drive through city conditions.
The new Maruti WagonR comes in with seven different colours - Breeze Blue, Passion Red, Ecru Beige, Bakers Chocolate, Silky silver, Glistening Grey and Superior white.
The interiors of the new Maruti WagonR offer more space, comfort and elegance than its predecessor. Its overall dimensions were increased to offer more spacious cabin and to add more small spaces to carry small things like cups and small bags. The legroom and headroom have been increased to offer a comfortable seating for four, but it can accommodate a total of five adults. Its narrower design has cut down the shoulder space at the rear, which makes it difficult to adjust three at rear seats. The car offers a decent boot space of 180 litres, which is sufficient to carry your daily bags.
The dual-tone interiors, rich blue and black upholstery on seats and other additions make the interiors more stylish. The new WagonR offers decent thigh and lumber support, which provides good comfortable seating position to both rear and front passengers. The dashboard looks average, but is surely better than the previous model. It comes loaded with can holders, glove compartment and several small storage spaces. The instrument cluster features a digital fuel gauge, two trip metres and tachometer. The top-of-the line variant of the vehicle gets a new audio system with good sounds, FM, CD player, USB and AUX-in ports.
The tilt adjustable electronic power steering, climate control, power windows in both front and rear seat and other reduce the human efforts. Its front seats are reclining and sliding, while the rear has 60:40 split folding seat. The air conditioner with heater and rotary AC knobs control the temperature inside the car and offers a good driving experience.
Engine & Transmission
Maruti Suzuki WagonR is being offered in petrol and CNG versions. It is powered by a light-weight 1.0-litre KB series petrol engine that churns out a maximum power output of 67.1bhp at 6200rpm and a peak torque of 90Nm at 3200rpm. The 998cc engine is also a very fuel efficient one with 18.9kmpl of mileage. This engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission, which transmits power to front wheels of the small hatchback.
While running on CNG, the new WagonR belts out a top power of 58.2bhp at 6200rpm and torque of 77Nm at 3500rpm. This model features the intelligent gas port injection (i-GPLI) bi-fuel technology, which further improves the fuel efficiency. Power is transmitted to front wheels via a five-speed manual transmission.
Performance & Handling
Maruti Suzuki India launched the new WagonR with better handling and ride quality when compared to its predecessor. However, it still lacks the punch and it seeks improvement. The vehicle has good suspension mechanism, McPherson strut suspension with coil spring at front and isolated trailing link suspension with coil spring at rear do their job well. The light steering helps maneuver it on urban traffic, however on highways, a driver needs more stability and tighter steering where the new WagonR lacks. Moreover, the driver gets tired soon as the Clutch and gearshifts feels hard. Handling is good for city driving, but if you are looking for a highway run, the car still needs improvement in terms of body roll.
The new Suzuki WagonR can accelerate to 100kmph from stand still in just 15.9 seconds and has a top speed of 148kmph. The vehicle remains absolutely stable at 130kmph, and is recommended to be driven around this speed limit only. The first and second gear ratio is short, but they perform really well in city conditions. When it comes to NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) levels, its competitors have are little better.
Maruti Suzuki WagonR features an efficient braking mechanism, which performs well during sudden brake application and in panic situations on roads. The front brakes of the small car are Ventilated Disc type and the rear brakes are drum type with 8-inches booster assisted brakes, to offer efficient braking during unexpected surprises on roads. The car also comes equipped with optional ABS (Anti Lock Braking System) which avoids wheel locking during sudden braking and offers stability on slippery surfaces. The front suspension in the WagonR is of McPherson strut with coil spring type, while the rear suspension is of isolated trailing link with coil spring type.
The all new Maruti WagonR offers an impressive fuel economy of 14.2kmpl on city conditions and 18.9kmpl on highways. It is 10 per cent more fuel efficient than its predecessor. The WagonR VXi CNG variant delivers an excellent 15.5km/kg of mileage in urban area and 20.2km/kg on highways. The petrol model has a fuel tank capacity of 35-litres, while the CNG model gets 60-litres of fuel tank.
The CNG kit comes equipped with the i-GPI technology that uses individual injectors for each cylinder. The amount of CNG delivered for different driving conditions is controlled by the ECU, which makes it more fuel efficient.
The new Maruti Suzuki WagonR comes equipped with a decent number of active and safety features to keep occupants and car safe during any mishaps. It sports a dual SRS airbag which offers a great help at the time of accidents, and gives a cushioning effect in collision. The presence of Anti Lock Braking system prevents the wheels from locking up in case of sudden brake application and offers greater stability. Its halogen headlamps with headlamp levelling functionality, front and rear fog lamps provide a clear visibility on roads during bad road conditions. The other safety measures in the hatchback are front and rear ELR seat belts, rear wipers, child proof rear door locks, high-mounted stop lamp, de-fogger and washer, warning lamps and few others.
Maruti Suzuki WagonR is a good value for money car. The low maintenance cost and good after sale service of MSI make it a good product to buy. Its interiors and design still need improvement, but it scores high on mileage front. The city mileage of around 15kmpl and 19kmpl on highways make it a perfect vehicle for daily commuting. One thing that Maruti still needs to work on in the case of the WagonR is the wheel noise, it's audible at almost all speeds and gears, though in top gears, it noise is less audible. The use of plastic and lack of space for rear passengers are the other two areas that need improvement.
Maruti Suzuki WagonR competes against the likes of Hyundai i10 and Ford Figo. However, the i10 hatchback is the closest rival of the WagonR. The Hyundai's model look stylish, whereas the boxy design of WagonR appears a bit tacky. Talking about interiors, the i10 scores more with a good range of comfort and safety features and better upholstery. Both models can accommodate four adults comfortably. However, the new WagonR comes equipped with better interior quality as compared to its predecessor. Moreover, the cabin has sufficient legroom and headroom.
The new Hyundai i10 is powered by a 1.1-litre iRDE engine that churns out a maximum power output of 68bhp and 99Nm of top torque. It delivers a fuel economy of 19.81kmpl. The new WagonR features a 1.0-litre k-series engine that produces 67.1bhp of power and 90Nm of torque. It offers a fuel economy of 20.51kmpl. On power front, both the models are equal. But in terms of ride quality, espcially on open roads, it's the WagonR that feels more matured and stable.
Ford Figo is another competitor of the WagonR. The Figo certainly offers more power output and spacious interiors. It has the maximum luggage carrying capacity in its league. It is powered by a 1.2-litre engine that develops 70bhp and 102Nm. Moreover, it is also available in a diesel version. However, it lacks when talked about fuel economy. It delivers a mileage of 15kmpl.
