Launched in 2010, the Ford Figo hatchback had been the company's top selling product in India till EcoSport compact SUV finally entered the market. In order to remain fresh in the market, the company came up with face lifted model, which again received an excellent response from the car buyers across the nation. The hatchback is being offered in both petrol and diesel guise, which helps the carmaker to target both gasoline and diesel buyers. When compared to its predecessor, the new Figo gets updates both inside and out. While the exteriors of the hatch feature restyled headlamps and tail lamps, new hexagonal grille incorporating newly formulated fog lamps and eight spoke alloys, the cabin of the car gets new steering with audio controls mounted on it, Bluetooth connectivity, best-in-class air conditioning and several other exciting features.

Under the hood, the Figo hatchback gets the 1.2-litre Duratec petrol and 1.4-litre DuraTorq diesel engines developing 70bhp and 68.1bhp, respectively. Both powertrains are mated to a five-speed manual transmission, which transmits power to front wheels of the hatch. Based on the Mark V European Fiesta platform, the vehicle has an excellent 2489mm wheelbase, higher than its competitors such as Swift, Beat, Indica Vista and others. We all know that the compact car segment is very competitive and to sustain itself the company needs to have a product with good pricing as well as high on features. The smaller sized engines further help the company price the vehicle competitive. The new Figo has been priced at Rs. 3.97 lakh for petrol model, while the diesel model is tagged at Rs. 4.95 lakh (all the prices are ex-showroom, New Delhi).

With this pricing, the Figo hatch is certainly one of the great value for money cars available in the market today.  Not just pricing, the vehicle offers several safety and security features such as Anti-lock braking system (ABS) with EBD (Electronic brake distribution force). Moreover, Ford India is also offering its buyers a chance to customise their Figo using genuine accessories including 14-inch alloy kit in two trims- premium and sports silver, rear wing spoiler kit, Figo roof rails, Mud-flaps kit, chrome door handles, chrome finisher, front grille and others. The buyers also have options to modify the interiors of the vehicle.

Exterior (including wheels)

Ford Figo is a smartly designed hatchback with a sporty and elegant stance. Launched in 2010, the vehicle faced stiff competition in the market, but it managed to hold its own in the market. But as the time progressed and some new and face lifted products entered the market, it necessitated Ford to give it a mid-life makeover.  So, to keep going in the market, the Figo was finally introduced with more appealing exteriors and features than its predecessor.

At first glance it is very difficult to distinguish the new model with the phased out one, but the car has gone through some positive changes.  The company called it the improved Kinetic Design, which gave a new look to the car. The front fascia now wears a new trapezoidal front grille that is similar to that of the EcoSport SUV. It also gets the newly designed headlamps, which now sports a larger reflective surface which also improves the visibility.

The company has added bezels to the fog lights which make them more effective in the dark. The side profile looks similar to that of the previous model, but now features the new 14-inch alloy wheels, which further enhance the overall beauty of the car. Moving on to the rear, the tail lamps too get minor cosmetic update, rest it remains unchanged.

Being a sub-4 metre car, the Figo hatchback has the best-in class wheelbase of 2489mm, much higher than its competitors. The vehicle measures 3795mm x 1680mm x 1427mm (length X breath X Height).

The Figo is being offered in eight different colours for its buyers including Colorado Red, Moondust Silver, Sea Grey, Kinetic Blue, Bright Yellow, Chill Metallic, Panther Black and Diamond White.

Interior

Ford Figo has always been praised for its spacious interiors, now with some subtle changes and new features; it has become an even more adorable product to drive home. The vehicle now features steering mounted audio controls that reduce human efforts, so to let the drive concentrate more on steering rather than dashboard and other instruments. The music system now gets USB-connectivity and the instrument panel sports a new Riviera Blue shade. The same blue fabric upholstery also enhances the beauty of the seats.

The Figo offers ample space to seat five adult passengers comfortably. The headroom, legroom and shoulder room are good for both front as well as rear seat passengers. It also has a best-in-class boot space of 284-litres, which is sufficient to carry your daily bags. Other than this, the new Figo comes equipped with several comfort and convenience features such as air conditioning with heater, remote fuel filler opening, anti drip wiping, front power windows, remote boot open, tilt adjustable steering, driver seat height adjust, electrically adjustable outside mirrors, 6-speed variable intermittent front wipers and others.

Engine & Transmission

The updated version of the Ford Figo carryover the same engine configuration- a 1.4-litre Duratorq diesel and a 1.2-litre Duratec petrol. However, with the tweaked calibration the low and mid-range becomes more responsive and further enhance the overall drivability of the vehicle. The 1.2-litre petrol engine churns out a maximum power output of 70.03bhp at 6250rpm and 102Nm of peak torque at 4000rpm. While the diesel powertrain develops 68.05bhp at 4000rpm and 160Nm of peak torque at 2000rpm. The 1.4-ltre Duratorq diesel motor is one of the most refined and fuel efficient engines of the segment, however, it lacks power when compared to its rivals. The power is transmitted to the front wheels of the car via a five-speed manual transmission.

Performance & Handling

Ford Figo has been one of the best hatchbacks to drive on the busy Indian streets. The light steering helps to maneuver the vehicle even on narrowest of roads, and it gets stiff when driven on highways for better stability.

The compact car features the same 1.2-litre petrol mill and the Ford's popular 1.4-litre oil burner that were doing duty to the old Ford Figo. At the time of introduction of the updated Figo, the company claimed more responsive and better tuned engines providing better drivability and performance, and it actually did.

The car now feels better and crispy to drive on low RPMs than the older version. The 1.4-litre DuraTorq diesel is one of the best engines of this segment in terms of drivability. Despite the power output of 68bhp, it can be said that the car is good enough to drive both on freeways and busy city traffic. The oil burner pulls so cleanly and one needs not to frequently change the gearbox, since this too has gone through some tweaks. There is minor turbo lag problem at low RPMs, but this can be neglected as it is very difficult to notice such tiny things in city traffic. The gear shifts are more precise and shorter than its predecessor.

Being a small hatchback, the Ford Figo offers a decent acceleration in both petrol and diesel versions. While the petrol model accelerates to 100kmph from standstill in 15.5 seconds and has a top speed of 170kmph, the diesel model takes 16 seconds to reach 100kmph from zero and can reach up to the top speed of 175kmph..

Braking System

Ford Figo comes equipped with decent braking mechanics which helps the driver control the vehicle on any braking situation. It features the ventilated discs at front and drum type rear brakes, which offers sufficient braking power. The top-of-the line model features the Anti-lock braking system (ABS) with EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution Force), which further improves the overall braking mechanism. The ABS system helps the car drive on slippery and hilly roads, as it prevents the wheels from locking up and avoids skidding.

Mileage (City & Highway)

Ford Figo features the famous 1.4-litre Duratorq diesel and 1.2-litre petrol mills, which are tuned to offer more fuel efficiency. With continuous rise in oil prices, this model offers an impressive mileage in both petrol and diesel guise. While the petrol mill delivers a decent mileage of 12.3kmpl in city conditions and 15.6kmpl on highways, the diesel mill returns 17kmpl of mileage in city and around 20kmpl on highways.

Safety features

Recent reports have suggested that Indian car buyers are now opting for vehicles with more safety features and less initial quality issues. Keeping this in mind, the American automaker has introduced the Figo hatchback loaded with sufficient elements to keep the driver and passenger safe on any mishaps. The car comes equipped with safety measures such as 3-point seatbelts for front and rear seats, dual front airbags for the safety of front passengers and lap strap for rear centre passenger. The updated Figo also features the passive anti-theft system, intelligent central locking with smart programmable keyless entry, laminated glazed windscreen, rear defogger with and front fog lamps.

 Verdict

Despite rising competition in the B hatchback segment, the Ford Figo did reasonably well for its maker, thanks to the timely updates made to the car. In fact, it had been the top-seller for Ford till the arrival of the EcoSport in the market, and is still the second bestselling car of Ford India’s line-up. What makes this car so popular among Indian buyers is its good looks, finely-tuned engines, spaciousness and definitely an impressive ride quality it offers despite having comparatively smaller engines than its close rivals.

The Ford Figo offers excellent space for rear and front passengers, appealing interiors and a bunch of exciting safety and comfort features. The company has used local components to develop this hatch, which turns into a lower ownership costs. With such an aggressive price tag and several new features, the new Figo proves to be a good value for money product.

Competition

Ford Figo  vs Maruti Suzuki Swift vs Hyundai Grand i10

The closest competitors of the Ford Figo are Hyundai Grand i10 and Maruti Suzuki Swift. While Swift hatch scores more on power, the Figo secures higher points on space. Both these models are hot favorites, but Ford's hatch takes the competitive edge due to its best-in-class boot space and wheelbase, spacious interiors, pricing and others.

Hyundai Grand i10 is a new product, and has already entered the list of top five selling car brands in India within 3 months of its launch. And the kind of value for money proposition the Grand i10 offers, it’s a real threat not just for Figo, but for the segment topper Maruti Suzuki Swift as well. The Grand i10 offers an excellent mileage, drivability, fresh looks and several first-in-class and advanced features, making it an overall better product than many in the segment.

Maruti Swift has been the country's top selling hatchback, which uses Fiat's 1.3-litre 'multi-jet' diesel engine that churns out a maximum power output of 74bhp and 190Nm of peak torque. While Ford uses 1.4-litre Duratorq diesel engine producing 68bhp and 160Nm of top torque. While the Swift hatchback offers an impressive mileage of 18kmpl in city and 22.9kmpl on highways, the Figo lacks in mileage as it offers 17kmpl and 20kmpl in city and highways, respectively.

On the other hand, Hyundai Grand i10 gets the new 1.1-litre engine that develops 70bhp of top power and 160Nm of top torque. Despite a smaller engine, this hatchback managed to outsmart the Figo's 1.4-litre engine. However, the Figo still scores high on drivability, interior space and luggage carrying capacity.

Pros

Attractive looks, spacious interiors, affordable and excellent driveability

 Cons

Petrol model could be more fuel efficient
