Launched back in 2010, the Chevrolet Beat has been country's one of the most stylish looking hatchbacks. Initially, the vehicle was launched in petrol variant only, however, the increase in demand for other drivetrains compelled the carmaker to introduce the diesel and LPG variants. In February 2011, GM introduced the LPG variants of the Beat, which was followed by the oil burner in July 2011. At the 2014 Indian Auto Expo, General Motors India launched the facelifted version of Beat hatchback.
Chevrolet Beat is being offered in both petrol and diesel guise. While the petrol version is powered by a 1.2-litre Smartech engine that develops 79.4bhp, the oil burner gets the 1-litre Smartech diesel mill producing 57.6bhp.
The new Chevrolet Beat is being offered in eight exciting exterior paints- super red, cocktail green, misty lake, linen beige, sandrift grey, switch blade silver, summit white and caviar black. The new Beat gets came with changes both inside and out. The front fascia of the hatchback has new bumper, redesigned grille and new fog lamps. The ground clearance of 165mm is quite good for city driving, however, the diesel version of the hatchback has an improved ground clearance of 175mm.

Chevrolet Beat facelift is powered by a 1.2L 4-cylinder petrol engine that churs out a maximum power output of 79.4bhp at 6200rpm and 108Nm of top torque at 4400rpm. The oil burner comes equipped with a 1.0-litre XSDE SMARTECH 3-cylinder common rail diesel engine, which is capable of developing a top power output of 57.6bhp at 4000rpm and 150Nm of top torque at 1750rpm. Both the engines come mated to a five-speed manual transmission which transmits power to the front wheels of the car.
Performance & Handling
The majority of the Chevrolet Beat sales come from its diesel variant, which is powered by a small 3-cylinder 993cc engine. Despite being a small engine, the Beat offers an impressive driveability on the city roads. In order to offer a good driving experience, the company has given shorter gear ratios. The NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) levels are also very impressive with Beat feeling very calm at decent speeds, and there is very little motor sound and vibes at hand. Like its diesel version, the petrol version of the hatch too impresses with its driveability. It offers very less NVH levels and takes 15.5 seconds to reach 100kmph from standstill. The vehicle attains a top speed of 145kmph.
Chevrolet Beat comes equipped with a decent braking system, which is further enhanced by inclusion of some highly effective technologies. The front suspension in the Beat is of McPherson Strut type, while the rear suspension is of Compound Link Type. Its front wheels feature the Disc type brakes, while the rear end gets the drum type, which perform quite well during sudden application. This braking mechanism gets further enhanced with the inclusion of ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System), which avoids wheel locking and skidding during runs on slippery roads. Though, the ABS has been only offered with top-end variants.
The Chevrolet Beat is being offered in three fuel options- diesel, petrol and LPG. The oil burner has the 1.0-litre SMARTECH engine that returns an impressive fuel economy of 25.44kmpl, while the petrol version has a 1.2-litre engine that offers a decent 18.6kmpl of mileage. The LPG variants too offer a good 13.3 km/kg.
Despite being a small city car, Chevrolet India has added a good amount of safety ingredients to make both passenger and car safe. It comes equipped with ELR Seatbelts (Emergency Locking Retractor equipped Seatbelts), ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) which prevents wheel locking and allows better steering control during run on slippery surfaces, dual airbags for both the driver and passenger to ensure complete safety.

With the introduction of Maruti Suzuki Celerio, the competition level in this segment is getting furious. To counter the growing competition, Chevrolet has introduced the Beat facelift with more features and upmarket looks. Other than the Celerio, Hyundai i10 is the closest competitor of the Beat in the market.
While Chevrolet Beat is being offered in both petrol and diesel guise, the other two models are only available in petrol versions. However, the newly introduced Celerio hatchback is the country's cheapest automatic car. On the other hand, Beat and Hyundai i10 are only available with manual transmission.
The Hyundai i10 features a 1.1-litre IRDE engine that produces 68bhp of power, while the Celerio gets the 1-litre gasoline mill producing 67bhp. The Chevrolet Beat houses the 1.2-litre engine that churns out a max power output of 79.4bhp. Here, the Beat outsmarts its competitors. When it comes to fuel economy, the Celerio has the upper hand. On the whole, Chevrolet Beat is a better product than the other two.
