BMW’s best-selling car 3 Series is now in its seventh generation, and went through six different phases and styling formats. The new 3-Series gets clues from its bigger sibling, the 5 Series. However, the design and styling are much improved to give it an aggressive, sportier and more outgoing look.

The new headlights, kidney grille lean and muscular bonnet with two bold creases flowing across the flanks, vertical air intakes, revised bumper, scaled down 5-Series tail lamps and wider bootlid enhance its sporty appearance. The base variant is assembled with 16-inches alloy wheels with 225/ 55 R16 tubeless tyres, while the top-end variant gets 17-inches alloy wheels with 225/ 45 R18 Bridgestone Potenzas tyres.

Its interior is typical European, which is inspired from the 5-Series. What adds more to its interior are offered comfort and entertainment equipments such as leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, automatic air conditioning with two zone control, electrically adjustable seat with memory, start/stop function, floor mats in velour, BMW’s iDrive with 16.5cm color display, Park distance control (PDC) rear, brake energy regeneration and more.

The new BMW 3-Series is available in two diesel and a petrol engine option. The 2.0-litre, 1995cc, 16V diesel engine churns out a maximum power of 184bhp @ 4000rpm with 380Nm of torque @ 1750 – 2750rpm. It can achieve 0-100kmph in 7.6 seconds with a top speed of 235kmph. It is the most frugal engine in this line-up that delivers a fuel economy of 11.2kmpl in city and 13.2kmpl on highways.

The 3-Series 330 Convertible is powered by a 3.0-litre, 2993cc, 24V diesel engine produces a maximum power of 245bhp @ 4000rpm with 520Nm of torque @ 1750rpm – 3000rpm. It accelerates 0-100kmph in just 6.5 seconds with a top speed of 250kmph. However, on fuel efficiency front it fails to mark an impact. It offers a mileage of 5.4kmpl in city and 8.2kmpl on highways.

The BMW 3-Series 328i Sport Line is power-packed with a 2.0-litre, 1997cc, 16V, MPFi petrol engine that makes a maximum power of 245bhp @ 5000rpm – 6500rpm and a peak torque of 350Nm @ 1250rpm – 4800rpm. This power-unit offers a fuel economy of 6.5kmpl in city and 10.9kmpl on highways. It can mark 0-100kmph in 6.1 seconds with a top speed of 250kmph. All engines are mated with a new eight-speed automatic transmission.

Driving dynamics is excellent, especially within the city. The power delivery is linear across the different rev-range. The engine and gearbox are prompt and responsive. The diesel engine is more rev-happy and frugal than the petrol unit, but quite noisy. The mid-range performance is punchy. The 3 Series offers three driving modes: Eco Pro, Comfort and Sport. Ride quality is impressive. The stiffer suspension, composed chassis and hydraulic steering contribute to its overall handling and ride quality. Braking performance is flawless. BMW’s 3 Series is a great value for money.

Exterior

The new 3-Series looks similar to the 5 Series, but wearing some new styling elements, it appears refreshing, sportier and more outgoing. The front end features new headlights, kidney grille, vertical air intakes, redesigned bumper and muscular bonnet with two bold creases flowing across the flanks. The side profile is managed by 16-inches alloy wheels with 225/ 55 R16 tubeless tyres, while the top-end variant is equipped with 17-inches alloy wheels with 225/ 45 R18 Bridgestone Potenzas tyres. The short overhang rear with wider bootlid and scaled down 5-Series tail lamps enhance its rear look. The BMW 3-Series is available in various colors: Impherial blue brilliant effect, Havanna, Orion silver, Black, Black sapphire, Glacier white, Sparkling bronze, Mineral white, Liquid blue, Melbourne red, Alpine white and Glacier white.

Interior

The 3 Series is a European beauty from inside. The interior design and styling are borrowed from the 5-Series. Loaded with several goodies, the saloon brings an immense comfort and ease such as leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, automatic air conditioning with two zone control, electrically adjustable seat with memory, start/stop function, floor mats in velour, BMW’s iDrive with 16.5cm color display, Park distance control (PDC) rear, brake energy regeneration and more.

Engine and Transmission

The new BMW 3-Series is offered in two diesel (2.0-litre, 1995cc and a 3.0-litre, 2993cc) and a petrol (2.0-litre, 1997cc) engine option. The 2.0-litre, 1995cc, 16V diesel engine produces a maximum power of 184bhp @ 4000rpm with 380Nm of torque @ 1750 – 2750rpm. It accelerates 0-100kmph in 7.6 seconds with a top speed of 235kmph. It delivers a fuel economy of 11.2kmpl in city and 13.2kmpl on highways, which is most frugal in this line-up.

The 3-Series 330 Convertible derives power from a 3.0-litre, 2993cc, 24V diesel engine that develops a peak power of 245bhp @ 4000rpm with 520Nm of torque @ 1750rpm – 3000rpm. It can achieve 0-100kmph sprints in just 6.5 seconds with a top speed of 250kmph. It offers a mileage of 5.4kmpl in city and 8.2kmpl on highways.

The BMW 3-Series 328i Sport Line is powered with a 2.0-litre, 1997cc, 16V, MPFi petrol engine that churns out a maximum power of 245bhp @ 5000rpm – 6500rpm and a peak torque of 350Nm @ 1250rpm – 4800rpm. It gives a fuel economy of 6.5kmpl in city and 10.9kmpl on highways. This powertrain sports BMW twin power turbo technology and twin scroll turbocharger with Valvetronic, Double-VANOS and high precision injection that enable it to deliver an outstanding performance. It reaches 0-100kmph in 6.1 seconds with a top speed of 250kmph.

Performance and handling

Firm and balanced ride of the 3-series makes it one of the best cars in terms of drivability. The power deliver is linear across the RPM range. There is no spike of power at any stage that enhances its comfort level. Engine refinement levels are impressive, but engine (diesel) noise is an issue, which more than the standard premium cars. The mid-range performance is excellent. The gearbox is precise and prompt. BMW’s unique driving modes (Eco Pro, Comfort and Sport) help with its handling and drivability. The robust suspension system soak jerks on patchy roads, and enhance its ride quality. Its composed chassis and hydraulic steering contribute add more to its driving dynamics.

Braking system

The 3 Series promises a safe and confident drive, equipped with powerful ABS (Anti-lock braking system), CBC (Cornering brake control), DSC (Dynamic stability control) including DTC (Dynamic traction control) and Run flat indicator. Disc brakes at front and rear wheels are standard offering.

Mileage

On fuel efficiency front, the BMW 3-Series isn’t an impressive saloon. Its 2.0-litre, 1995cc, 16V diesel engine delivers a fuel economy of 11.2kmpl in city and 13.2kmpl on highways, which is highest in the offered engine line-up. A 3.0-litre, 2993cc, 24V diesel engine is equipped with the 3-Series 330 Convertible that returns a mileage of 5.4kmpl in city and 8.2kmpl on highways.

Powering the BMW 3-Series 328i Sport Line, the 2.0-litre, 1997cc, 16V, MPFi petrol engine offers a fuel economy of 6.5kmpl in city and 10.9kmpl on highways.

Safety features

Focusing on the safety side of the 3 Series, BMW equipped the saloon with various advanced safety features such as ABS (Anti-lock braking system), DSC (Dynamic stability control), DTC (Dynamic traction control), CBC (Cornering brake control), airbags (for driver and front passenger), side airbags (for driver and front passenger), active headrest front, electronic vehicle immobilizer and crash sensor, runflat tyres with flat tyre indicator, roll over protection system, side impact protection, ergonomic seat belt system at rear, inertia-reel seatbelts at front and two outer rear seats with belt tensioners and belt force limiter, three-point seat belts for all rear seatsand warning triangle with first aid kit.

Verdict

The new BMW 3 Series is a great entry level luxury saloon. Despite the composed dimensions, it’s one of the most spacious compact saloons in its league. The engine line-up is powerful, efficient and prompt, but fails to mark an impression when it comes to fuel efficiency. The 3 Series is fun to drive. Ride is balanced and firm. BMW’s 3 Series is the most practical and convincing compact luxury saloon.

Competition

BMW 3 Series Vs Audi A4

The BMW 3 Series is a sporty and outgoing compact luxury saloon. It has a universal appeal to address young buyers. It is 77mm shorter than the Audi A4. Despite having the compact design, it offers one of the most spacious cabins in its class. The Audi A4 is a premium and sleek saloon that might attract the buyers concerned to social prestige and status. However, it’s a completely an objective matter.

The 3 Series has a driver-oriented and practical interior, which is brimming with comfort and entertainment features. The interior of Audi A4 is plush and comfortable, but isn’t user-friendly. A spare wheel is offered with the A4, while it’s missing in the 3 Series.

The engine line-up of the 3 Series is relatively more efficient, powerful and responsive than the A4. However, the engine refinement and NVH levels of the A4 powertrains are far better. Performance-wise, both are equivalent. The BMW 3 Series is a better pick in every aspect.
