AudiCompany is a global company with an international presence in as many as 110 countries across the world. It is also among the oldest car makers in the world. Apart from making passenger cars, Audi participated in motor sports and won many races as well as accolades.
In India, Audi has brought its premium luxury cars that are innovative and have state-of-the-art technology since 2004. Audi is also well known for its trademark technologies, quattro (all-wheel drive) and Multi Media Interface (MMI), among others.
According to Audi Company history, August Horch, upon graduating from the Technical University in Mittweida, Saxony, took up a job with Carl Benz in Mannheim, in 1896. Horch was initially in the Engine Manufacturing Department and later became Head of the Motor Vehicle Construction Department. Leaving the job, he set up business on his own, thus establishing Horch & Cie. Motorwagen Werke in Cologne on 14 November, 1899.
Consequently, Horch moved to Saxony, first to Reichenbach in 1902 and then to Zwickau in 1904. It was here that the company was changed into a joint-stock corporation. Due to some differences of opinion with the Board of Management and Supervisory Board, August Horch left the company in 1909. Immediately after leaving his own company, Horch established a second car company in Zwickau. As his last name was already in use and was protected by trademark, he chose the Latin translation of his name for the new company.
As a result, ‘horch’ or 'hark' became 'Audi' and in December 1914, Audi Automobilwerke GmbH became a joint-stock company. Jörgen Skafte Rasmussen, the owner of Zschopauer Motorenwerke/DKW, acquired a majority interest in Audiwerke AG in 1928 and in 1929 he merged the Zwickau-based company with his own business. Upon the request of the State Bank of Saxony, which realised that its investment in Saxony's car industry was in danger, Audiwerke, Horchwerke and Zschopauer Motorenwerke/DKW merged to form the Auto Union AG on 29 June, 1932.
The newly formed entity simultaneously concluded an agreement with Wanderer Werke for the purchase and lease of Wanderer's automotive division. The resultant symbol of this merger was four rings, the design that serves as the Audi logo to this very day. In 1945, after the end of the World War II, Auto Union AG's premises were situated in the zone occupied by the Soviet forces, who expropriated the assets, dismantled the plant and had the company removed from the Commercial Register of the city of Chemnitz in 1948.
Consequently, Auto Union GmbH was formed on 3 September, 1949 with the purpose of carrying forward the automotive tradition of the four rings. Starting in 1954, Friedrich Flick gradually acquired a large stake in the equity of Auto Union GmbH. He was following the strategy to find a strong partner for Auto Union in the medium term. In April 1958, Daimler-Benz AG acquired 88 percent of Auto Union's shares and in 1959 the Ingolstadt Company became a fully-owned subsidiary. 1965 witnessed the rebirth of Audi, a name rich in automotive tradition. However, a new era had began in Ingolstadt in another sense, too, as the company had become part of the Volkswagen Group.
In 1969, Volkswagenwerk AG merged Auto Union GmbH and the Neckarsulm-based NSU Motorenwerke AG. The new company was now called Audi NSU Auto Union AG and had its registered offices in Neckarsulm. The resultant extensive range of Audi and NSU models covering a wide variety of engines and drive concepts led to the coining of a new advertising slogan in 1971, 'Vorsprung durch Technik'. This slogan has effectively been the company's mission statement ever since.
The company once again underwent a change of name from Audi NSU Auto Union AG to AUDI AG in 1985. In the same year, the AudiCompany'sheadquarters were relocated to Ingolstadt. Since then,Audi AG has evolved consistently and has become one of the world's most renowned car-makers.
Audi Company was founded by August Horch, the son of a blacksmith, who was born on 12 October, 1868, in the town Winningen, situated on the banks of the river Moselle. Horch studied at the Technical College in Mittweida and in 1896, at the age of 28 years, he joined Carl Benz in Mannheim. Horch continued there until 1899 as in charge of the motor-vehicle construction department. It can be said that he accompanied as well as contributed quite much during the earliest days of development of the automobile.
August Horch went on to start a small motor-vehicle repair workshop of his own in Cologne in 1899, called Horch & Cie. Motorwagen Werke. Consequently, by 1901 he had built his first car and in 1902, he shifted his company to Reichenbach in the Vogtland region in Germany. Once again, in 1904, he relocated his office to Zwickau, which subsequently became the location of Horch Werke's. Ten years after Horch had begun his motor-vehicle workshop, he left his own company in 1909, owing to differences of opinion. Just a few weeks later, he established another car factory. Horch named it as 'Audi Automobilwerke GmbH', a translation of his name in Latin, in 1910.
In 1920, at the age of 52 years, Horch retired as the Chairman from the Audiwerke AG's Management Board. Consequently, he went on to pursue a career as an expert consultant and assessor in matters of automotive engineering. In June 1932, when the new Auto Union AG Company was formed, Horch was invited to join its Supervisory Board. August Horch, founder of 'Audi', died on 3 February, 1951 in Münchberg, Upper Franconia.
