Latest on Maruti Suzuki Alto 800: 30 July, 2015
Country's largest automaker Maruti Suzuki has constantly managed to stand on top of sales charts owing to its top-selling hatchback Alto 800. The company has been offering the economical hatchback in a CNG trim apart from the regular petrol variant. This time around, as per sources, the company has been working on offering the Alto 800 in a diesel trim sometime by December this year. Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 Sharing the Celerio diesel platform, the Alto 800 in diesel would also be powered by a 800cc two-cylinder diesel engine that generates about 47.6 Ps of power with 125 Nm of torque.
Maruti Suzuki Alto 800, a Hatchback has 7 versions available in India. Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 has 6 Petrol cars and 1 CNG car. Other popular cars in the similar price range of Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 are Hyundai Eon, Ford Figo and Hyundai i10. Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 comes in 6 colours, namely, New Blazing Red, New Forst Blue, New Granite Grey, New Torque Blue, Silky Silver, Superior White.
The Alto 800 is one of the cheapest Maruti Suzuki cars in India today. With a conventional styling, the hatchback doesn’t mark an impression at first sight, though it manages to look quite refreshing. It gets some styling cues from other Maruti Suzuki car models like Alto and the A-Star.
From inside, the car looks quite familiar since it shares interior design and equipments with the old Alto. The material quality, however, is certainly upmarket. An optional driver airbag is offered in the top-end variant only.
The Alto 800 is powered by a 796cc petrol engine, which is tweaked for better power and torque performance. It churns out a maximum power of 47.5bhp at 6000rpm with a torque of 69Nm at 3500rpm. Mated with a 5-speed manual gearbox, it returns a fuel economy of 22.74kmpl, while the CNG variant delivers a mileage of 30.46 km/kg. Gearshift is quite smooth, and drivability is excellent. Ride is much improved, thanks to the modified agile suspension. However, the undersized tyres affect its overall handling and ride quality.

The various fuel trims in Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 are priced differently. The Petrol trims are priced between Rs. 2,66,583/- to Rs. 3,61,051/-. The CNG trims of Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 start at Rs. 3,87,459/-.
The design of this hatchback is simple, and styling is quite conventional. It resembles the earlier generation Alto and the A-Star. Among the new changes, it gets a new twin grille, pronounced headlamps, chin spoiler effect and bold shoulder creases flowing across the length of the hatchback. The undersized tyres and increased height and ground clearance spoil its decent design.
The interior of the car looks similar to the earlier generation Alto, though it is lot better in terms of quality and comfort. It comes equipped with a new dashboard with silver accent, a large 3-spoke steering wheel and front seats with integrated headrests. The headroom and legroom are slightly increased, though it still remains uncomfortable for tall passengers, especially at the rear. The boot space has been marginally increased too. An optional driver airbag is offered with the top-end variant only.
Powering the Alto 800 is a 796cc petrol engine, which is now tuned for better power and torque outputs. It produces a maximum power of 47.5bhp at 6000rpm with a torque of 69Nm at 3500rpm. A 5-speed manual gearbox is on offer. The petrol variants deliver a mileage of 17kmpl in city and 22.74kmpl on highways, while the CNG version returns a fuel efficiency of 28.29 km/kg in city and 30.46 km/kg on highways. It’s quicker than its older sibling. It accelerates 0-100kmph in 15-16 seconds, while the CNG model marks 0-100kmph in 17-18 seconds. The hatchback can attain a top speed of 140kmph - 145kmph.
Performance and Handling
The engine is more frugal and peppier at low revs. Throttle response is impressive. Ride quality is slightly better than the old model. It’s easy to drive on urban roads. Gearshift is very neat. However, the puny tyres affect its handling, especially at high speeds.
Braking performance is not impressive. It maintains a steady stance under braking, however stopping distances suffer due to the narrow tyre patch. It gets front disc and rear drum brakes.
The 796 cc CNG - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 18 km/kg in city and 20 km/kg on highways, while the Petrol variant offers a mileage of 18 kmpl on urban roads and 20 kmpl and freeways, respectively.
The hatchback is equipped with the basic safety features like seatbelts, disc and drum brakes etc. An optional driver airbag is offered with the top-variant only.
Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 is a decent urban hatchback with improved drivability, fuel efficiency and ride quality. The car received some exterior and interior updates that made it look better than before. There are so many fuel efficient Maruti Suzuki cars in India, and Alto 800 is one of them.
The Hyundai Eon is the closest rival of the Alto 800, which has an upper hand with feature-rich and best-in-class interior and modern styling. That said, the after sales service and maintenance cost favour all Maruti Suzuki car models including the Alto 800. This hatchback is one of the most fuel efficient Maruti Suzuki cars in India.
