Maruti Suzuki 800 has been Maruti Suzuki's flagship model since 1983 when it started its operations for the first time in India. The car is now offered with air conditioning and its LPG variants are also available. It remains one of the fastest and highest selling car models in India. As suggested by name, car is equipped with a 796cc engine that gives enough power to this lightweight car to glide on roads. Keeping pace with the industry, new Maruti Suzuki 800 is equipped with Intelligent Computerised Anti-theft System. Besides an excellent on road economy, the car seems to have every basic requirement that an ideal mini car should have.
Maruti Suzuki 800 Launch History
Maruti Suzuki India started its operations as Maruti Udyog Limited in the year 1983, when it launched Maruti Suzuki 800. Till then, Indian roads were occupied with Fiat or Premier Padmini, Ambassador and Contessa. Hindustan Motor's Ambassador and Padmini used to have a rear wheel drive and offered very little fuel economy. Contessa was a mid-size sedan and was costlier than the other two. Besides, Indian middle class was looking forward to more options in styling and at the same time, required a vehicle which was low on price. Hence, it was a perfect timing for the launch of Maruti Suzuki 800, which led it to become an instant hit.
Till date, Maruti Suzuki has sold more than 1 crore vehicles in India, out of which, a large number of Maruti Suzuki 800s can still be seen on Indian roads. In June 2008, Maruti Suzuki launched new LPG variants of this car, which was named as Maruti Duo. These cars are BS-III compliant and have same power and torque levels as the original petrol variants have.
Maruti Suzuki 800 Variants
Currently four basic variants of new Maruti Suzuki 800 cars are in production. These cars are powered by a common 796cc engine that produces a power of 37 bhp at 5000 rpm. The variants are available in non metallic and metallic paints, which have a price difference of nearly Rs.2000 to Rs.3000. Details of the variants are discussed in the table below:
|Maruti Suzuki 800 Std||The car comes with a reclining and sliding front seats and dual tone interior upholstery. Front door pocket, front & rear assist grips and 3 cabin lights add to the convenience. Even this base variant is equipped with Intelligent Computerised Anti-theft System. Collapsible steering column, headlight levelling and seatbelts are included.|
|Maruti Suzuki 800 AC||Same engine, chassis and overall design. Includes all safety, security and convenience features as the base variant does. Specially designed Air conditioner for Indian summers. Green Tinted glasses are included for improving the effectiveness of air conditioning.|
|Maruti Suzuki 800 Std LPG||The engine capacity and type is same, however it is equipped with an MPFI (multi point fuel injection) system to accommodate the LPG kit. One can switch between the petrol and LPG modes effortlessly with a press of button. All other features are similar to the Maruti Suzuki 800 Std.|
|Maruti Suzuki 800 AC LPG||The LPG variant is similar to Maruti Suzuki 800 AC. It is also the highest priced variant of new Maruti Suzuki 800.|
Maruti Suzuki 800 Pricing
All variants of Maruti Suzuki 800 are available in a price range of Rs.2 lacs to Rs.2.5 lacs.
Maruti Suzuki 800 Review
Maruti is still recognised as a small car maker due to its popular 800cc hatchback that revolutionised the Indian automobile market. Maruti Suzuki 800 cars have not received highest ratings or 'car of the year award' because at the time it was launched, most of the automotive magazines and TV shows were not existent. The sales performance of Maruti Suzuki 800 is still better than most of the new entrants in the segment. Moreover, the car has been able to grab attention of media with launch of its LPG variants.
Maruti Suzuki 800 Used Car Market
Maruti has one of the widest organised used car markets in the country. By 2009 it had established 304 'True Value Dealerships' in 179 cities across the nation. These 'True Value' shops offer avenue to exchange an old Maruti with new models by accurate evaluation of technical specifications of the car. Advanced procedures ensure that one gets a fair deal in the exchange process. Besides, Maruti Suzuki 800 is still a dependable car and has a high resale value.
Maruti Suzuki 800 Specifications
Maruti Suzuki 800 comes with a powerful engine that has given consistent performance all these years. The front wheel drive hatchback offers an economy of above 20 kmpl. This small entry level vehicle has a capacity to seat only four adults and is perfect for office going needs. The suspensions of new Maruti Suzuki 800 cars are designed for city driving though and do not respond very well at high speeds. One can go above 100 kmph mark, though it is not advisable to do so, as it starts vibrating a lot. Some of the technical specifications of Maruti Suzuki 800 are mentioned below:
|Engine Type||4 stroke cycle, water cooled SOHC (1C2V)|
|Number of cylinders||3|
|Piston Displacement||796 cc|
|Maximum Output||37 bhp at 5000 rpm|
59 Nm at 2500 rpm,
(56 Nm at 2500 rpm in LPG variants)
|Transmission||4 Speed Manual, (All Syncromesh), 1 Reverse|
|Steering||Rack & Pinion|
|Breaks||Front- Disc, Rear- Drum|
Maruti Suzuki 800 Exteriors
Maruti Suzuki 800 has a very basic but decent hatchback design. It doesn't have the capability to compete with the exteriors of new Hyundai and Chevrolet cars, though it still manages to attract a lot of customers who don’t have looks as a high priority in their criteria for selection.
The term 'hatchback' invariably brings the image of Maruti Suzuki 800 in every Indian's mind. The designing is not exactly aerodynamic, but then it doesn't matter a lot for a vehicle that is not intended for racing. Moreover, the 800 car does not have any major clash with Indian sensibilities. Maruti Suzuki 800 doesn't have body coloured bumpers or rear view mirrors, though they still compliment the four basic colours, the car comes in. The car has an attractive front radiator grille, which sports the Suzuki logo. New Maruti Suzuki 800 cars have green tinted side glasses in AC variants, which remain the only major distinction in exteriors of the variants. The car comes in four metallic and non metallic colours viz. Superior White, Silky Silver, Brick Red and Blue Blaze.
New Maruti Suzuki 800 is a small car with a capacity to seat only four adult passengers. The dimensions of this car are given below:
|Overall Length (mm)||3335|
|Overall Width (mm)||1440|
|Overall Height (mm)||1405|
|Wheel Base (mm)||2175|
|Minimum Ground Clearance (mm)||170|
Maruti Suzuki 800 Interiors
It is not possible to realise the kind of convenience Maruti Suzuki 800 provides in the limited price range it is offered in.
Maruti Suzuki 800's interiors might not be lavish and one doesn't expect chrome finish here and there. Still, the moulded roof lining and dual tone interior upholstery makes the cabin liveable. There are absolutely no distractions in the dashboard, which is as simple as it can get. The illuminated display of stay type fuel gauge and speedometer looks quite attractive at night.
Basic conveniences like sun visors, coin receptacle, glove compartment, front door pockets and head restraints have not been forgotten in Maruti Suzuki 800 cars. Front and rear assist grips have been provided that are really useful at sharp turns. Similarly, one doesn't have to worry about the revs as no tachometer finds its place in the instrument panel. Reclining and sliding front seats at the front are very comfortable and might not cause any inconvenience even in a long tour. Air conditioning of Maruti Suzuki 800 is fine and remains effective even in the hot summers.
Even from the exteriors of new Maruti Suzuki 800 one can decide that planning a long highway tour with this car is not a good option. This 4-seater has just enough space at the rear, though front seats have ample legroom. Head room of Maruti Suzuki 800 seems all right for average Indian height, which is nearly five and a half feet. People try including luggage racks at the top, to compensate for limited boot space, which only appears very less.
Maruti Suzuki 800 Mileage, Average and Fuel Economy
Maruti Suzuki has been held accountable for Indian obsession with mileage. It is the exceptional mileage of Maruti Suzuki 800 cars on 'Indian Roads', which allowed it to remain ahead in competition for a long time. The car offers a mileage slightly above 16 kmpl on highways. Even in the city the mileage of Maruti Suzuki 800 is not lower. Though, AC variants are expected to have a lower mileage. One may also be interested in the LPG variants as they reduce the running costs of the car remarkably.
Maruti Suzuki 800 On Road Drive
Most of the people in India start their driving classes with Maruti Suzuki 800 and would say it is extremely easy to shift gears and steer this car. Somehow one doesn't feel the need for a power steering until one has driven a car equipped with it. The turning radius of Maruti Suzuki 800 is less than 4.4 metre, which makes it ideal for congested roads. Though, its acceleration doesn't stand anywhere near to the Santro’s, it is not bad at all.
The cabin remains conveniently silent till one hears a thud on crossing a pothole. Its suspensions have been redesigned for Indian conditions and are more than effective for car's weight. One cannot take Maruti Suzuki 800 India to very high speeds in any condition, and hence doesn’t have to worry too much about the breaking, which includes standard disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. It is worth mentioning that in absence of ABS car does get a little out of control if breaks are pressed suddenly.
Maruti Suzuki 800 Power
New Maruti Suzuki 800 cars are powered by a 796cc, 4 stroke cycle, 3 cylinder water cooled single overhead cam engine that produces 37 hp at 5000 rpm. A torque of 59 Nm at a fairly low 2500 rpm proves to be more than effective for this 1 tonne car. Unlike other small hatchbacks, which become very noisy while climbing a hill, one doesn't experience such issues with Maruti Suzuki 800.
Maruti Suzuki 800 Acceleration and Pick Up
Most of the people in India who have driven a Maruti Suzuki 800 and Premier Padmini would tell that the car is much quicker than the old Fiat. Its acceleration is very smooth and one can reach near 100 kmph mark in few seconds. However, it is not very comfortable to maintain the speedometer needle of Maruti Suzuki 800 at the extreme right, as the NVH characteristics of engine are not that fine. Moreover, this light vehicle starts leaving the ground at every minor projection on road, which doesn't add to the confidence of driver.
Maruti Suzuki 800 Safety & Security
Maruti Suzuki 800 in India now comes with an advanced Intelligent Computerised Anti-theft System, which basically is a common alarm system. Front and rear seat belts are provided as a standard safety feature in this car. In case accident occurs, a laminated wind shield prevents the toughened glass from splitting and causing injuries in the process.
Besides, the side impact beams that are a part of vehicle’s safety feature also prevent severe side injuries. A collapsible steering wheel column in Maruti Suzuki 800 cars is very effective in reducing the frontal injuries in such scenarios. Additional body reinforcements add to the occupant's safety. Headlamp levelling device and front wipers are other safety systems included in the vehicle.
Maruti Suzuki 800 Comfort & Convenience
Inclusion of air conditioning has been single most significant improvement in the new Maruti Suzuki 800 cars. Car is not very extensive in terms of its comfort and convenience features. Seating is comfortable, though rear seats can’t be reclined like the seats at front. Glove compartment and centre box with lid have been provided for storing miscellaneous items. Front door pocket near the co-driver's end proves beneficial for keeping a map.
Sun visor could have been provided with vanity mirror, which are readily becoming part of every vehicle's standard accessory. Though, one can still use the rear view mirror for the purpose. Three cabin lights have been provided which might offer ease in finding change from the coin receptacle.
Maruti Suzuki 800 Wheels & Suspension
Maruti Suzuki 800 cars India is equipped with 12 inch radial tyres which offer very good grip even on slippery roads. The suspensions are perfectly matched with vehicle type and are able to tackle every major or minor pothole on the road. Moreover, these suspensions keep the vehicle evenly grounded at sharp turns and high speeds.
|Suspension Front||McPherson Strut with coil spring|
|Suspension Rear||Coil spring with gas filled shock absorbers|
|Tyre Size||Radial 145 / 70 R-12|
Maruti Suzuki 800 Stereo & Accessories
Maruti Suzuki doesn't offer Audio system as a part of standard accessory in Maruti Suzuki 800 cars.
Maruti Suzuki 800 Dealers
Maruti has more than 900 sales outlets spreading across 600 cities of India. Similarly, it has 2900 service stations that cover more than 1300 cities across the nation. Such a wide network makes it really convenient for customers to realise their dreams of owning small family car like new Maruti 800. New Maruti 800 car prices may vary according to taxes levied by the states and other business policies of the dealers. A list of dealers in four major cities of India viz. Maruti Suzuki 800 Competitor Analysis
The only car that can compete with Maruti Suzuki 800 is Tata Nano. Tata Nano surely looks more attractive and new age from its exteriors and interiors. It is available in far more vibrant colours than 800. Moreover, Nano has independent front and rear suspension systems. One would say that Tata has taken all care in designing the suspensions of this lightweight small car, which would otherwise fail terribly on Indian roads.
Tyre size of Nano is same 12 inch as the Maruti's 800, though one can also get tubeless tyres in higher variants. Though there isn't much difference in the power ratings, torque produced by the 624 cc engine of Nano is only 48 Nm at 3000 rpm, which doesn't help much on steep climbs. Nano looses in technical features, as it builds up in its long list of comfort and convenience features. The seats are more convenient and come with headrests. One has to say that, its interiors are of superior quality than Maruti 800. However, Maruti 800 cars have a class of their own and appear sturdier on road. Moreover, the cars are backed by Maruti's unmatched sales and service network which goes in its favour.
Maruti Suzuki 800 LPG/CNG version
LPG version of Maruti Suzuki 800 is known as Maruti 800 Duo. It works on Gas Mixer System that uses revolutionary Integrated Gas Technology. This environment friendly engine has nearly 10% lower carbon dioxide emissions and effectively reduces the running costs of the vehicle. Though power is not affected, torque is a bit lower than the petrol variants. For added safety and quality control, all the components of the LPG variants are fitted on-line alongside the petrol variants of the car. LPG variant has nearly 10% less carbon dioxide emissions than the petrol variants.
One can simply press a button to switch from petrol to LPG mode and vice versa. The power drop during switch over is kept to a minimum possible rating. These new Maruti 8000 car have got a computerised system, which effectively manages the complete fuel burnout before a switch over takes place. The LPG variants come with company fitted LPG cylinders. LPG inlet has been provided near the petrol fuel inlet lid for added convenience in refuelling.
Maruti Suzuki 800 Pros
Maruti 800 car continues to impress with its mileage and consistent low maintenance performance. Inclusion of air conditioning and launching of LPG variants are welcome improvements and have reflected well in company's sales figures.
Maruti Suzuki 800 Cons
No significant improvement in the interior spacing or comfort features has been seen in Maruti Suzuki 800. Quality of plastics is still the same and one does feel lack of small conveniences like cup holders. Fog lamps, which are now an essential part of every vehicle, are also missing in the car.
Maruti Suzuki 800 Conclusion
Maruti Suzuki 800 is a perfect car for small urban families though one may also find a large number of these popular cars even in the rural areas. Maruti Suzuki 800 car continues its winning run due to its market image and trust of customers. Low maintenance, ownership and running costs make Maruti Suzuki 800 a preferable option among the large market of hatchbacks.
