Mahindra Scorpio Overview

Mahindra Scorpio, a SUV has 11 versions available in India. Mahindra Scorpio has 11 Diesel cars. Other popular cars in the similar price range of Mahindra Scorpio are Mahindra Bolero, Mahindra Thar and Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. Mahindra Scorpio comes in 4 colours, namely, Diamond White, Fiery Black, Molten Red, Regal Blue.

Introduced in 2002, the Mahindra Scorpio SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) has always been appreciated for its rugged looks, commanding road presence and off-road capabilities. The Scorpio is one of the top-selling Mahindra cars in India that has received major updates and a new engine in 2006, followed by a facelift in 2008. In 2014, the company launched the new-generation model of the car that received quite an overwhelming response.

The new model looks more rugged and masculine than its predecessor. It gets a new pair of projector headlights with LED Daytime running lights, a new radiator grille, modified bumper, body colored door handles, new roof rails, rear spoiler and new LED tail-lamps.

The interior of the new-gen model is far better than the old one. Although, the seats frame remains same, they are updated in terms of firmness and cushioning. The SUV received some additional features like a new steering wheel with audio control buttons, 2-DIN music system, a touchscreen infotainment system, GPS navigation, Voice assist system and more.

The new model continues to be powered with the same diesel engines - a 2.2-litre mHawK and a 2.5-litre m2DiCR. The mHawk engine produces a maximum power of 120bhp and 280Nm of peak torque, while the 2.5-litre, m2Di engine delivers 74bhp with 200Nm. The SUV is among the most fuel efficient Mahindra cars in India that returns a maximum mileage of 15.4kmpl. The 5-speed manual gearbox requires less shifting, and offers an impressive drivability. Engines’ refinement levels are much improved. The ride quality, too, is improved, but still gets bouncy. The body roll is well-controlled.

The Diesel trims of Mahindra Scorpio are priced between Rs. 8,40,525/- to Rs. 14,32,976/-.

With modified panels and few significant front and rear updates, the new model looks more aggressive and outgoing than its predecessor. The front end features a new pair of projector headlights with LED Daytime running lights, a new radiator grille and re-designed bumper. The side and rear profiles receive body colored door handles and a new roof rails and a new rear spoiler and revised LED tail-lamps, respectively.

Mahindra reworked on its interiors, and made it richer and more comfortable than the old model. The seats frames remain same, but they are more cushioned and firm. The SUV is loaded with plenty of new comfort-enhancing features such as a new steering wheel with audio control buttons, 2-DIN music system, a touchscreen infotainment system, a new instrument cluster, rear wiper and defogger, horizontally-stacked AC vents, sliding seats for the middle row and remote central locking. Features like GPS navigation, Voice assist system, a 6-inches touch screen infotainment system with CD, DVD, Bluetooth, USB and Aux connectivity, Intellipark and rain & light sensors are available only on top-end model.

Engine & Transmission

The new model is available in the same diesel powertrain options - a 2.2-litre mHawK and a 2.5-litre m2DiCR. The 2.2-litre, mHawk engine churns out a maximum power of 120bhp with a peak torque of 280Nm. The 2.5-litre, m2Di engine is good for 74bhp and 200Nm. Both the engines are coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission.

Performance & Handling

Both the engines are more refined and punchy (mid-range) than before. It requires less gear shifting, and offers impressive drivability. Handling is balanced, and the ride quality is improved, too. However, it gets bouncy on rough roads. The lighter suspension and wider track contribute to its high speed stability. Body roll is drastically reduced.

Braking system

Equipped with disc brakes at the front axle and rear drum brakes, the SUV ensures efficient and safe drive. The Anti-lock braking system (ABS) and panic brake indication further enhance its braking performance.

The 2609 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 13 kmpl in city and 15 kmpl on highways.

Safety Features

Just like other Mahindra car models, the Scorpio is equipped with plenty of safety features such as dual SRS airbag, ABS (Anti Lock Braking System), panic brake indication, crash protection crumple zone, child locks, speed alert, side intrusion  beams, voice assist system, anti-theft warning, collapsible steering column, double horn, high mounted stop lamp, side impact beams and more.

The Scorpio is one of the most fun-to-drive Mahindra cars in India. It’s a perfect pick for the buyers who want a spacious, well-equipped and powerful off-roader.

The Renault Duster is the closest competitors of Mahindra Scorpio. The Duster is available in both petrol and diesel engine options, while the home-grown SUV is offered only in diesel version. The Scorpio offers decent off-road fuel economy, while the Duster delivers an impressive city mileage. Mahindra’s SUV is more spacious and practical than the Duster. But, when it comes to interior comfort and exterior styling, the Duster takes a lead over its rival.
