After achieving immense success in premium SUV segment with Mahindra XUV500, India’s largest utility maker Mahindra & Mahindra introduced the compact SUV Quanto. The Quanto looks identical to the Xylo. The front fascia gets distinguish headlights and slight knob on top-side of the front grill. The side and rear profiles looks identical to the Xylo, except the change in size. Having a disproportionate design and unconventional styling, the Quanto doesn’t appeal.
The interior gets clue from the Xylo. Sharing the wheelbase (2760mm) with its sibling, the Quanto offers spacious and comfortable cabin. The front and middle rows are blessed with ample legroom and headroom. However, the under-thigh support is awful. The third row lacks space. The material quality is poor. The top-end variant (C8) comes loaded with a plenty of features such as 2-din audio system with USB, SD card and Aux connectivity, digital display, dual airbags, ABS, reverse parking sensors, arm rests, rear wiper and more.
The Mahindra Quanto is powered with a sub 1.5-litre diesel unit, which is downsized version of the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine. This powertrain features a twin-stage turbocharger, CRDi and inter-cooled technology, and delivers a peak power output of 100bhp @ 3750rpm with 240Nm of torque @ 1600-2800rpm. Coupled with a five-speed manual transmission, it returns an impressive fuel economy of 14kmpl in city and 17.21kmpl on highways. The Quanto can achieve 100kmph from standstill within 17 seconds, which isn’t prompt.
The SUV fails to make an impact when it comes to handling and performance. The Quanto shares the suspension with the Xylo, and delivers bouncy ride on uneven surfaces. However, it behaves good on smooth roads. The steering is light, but isn’t prompt and responsive. Due to tall body construction and small tyres, there is significant body roll. The braking performance is decent. With much action in the compact sport utility vehicle market, the Mahindra Quanto competes against the Renault Duster, Ford EcoSport, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Premier Rio.
The Mahindra Quanto is available within price range of entry-level saloons, which makes it a great deal for the cost-conscious buyers. The Mahindra Quanto is priced between Rs. 5.99 lakh – Rs. 7.57 lakh.
The Quanto is a masculine and robust SUV. Based on the Xylo’s platform, the Quanto resembles to its sibling. The front receives some minor exterior updates such as new headlights and slight knob on top-side of the front grill. The bonnet is more pronounced now. There is no change to its side profile, except the decreased length and tyre size. The 15-inches, six-spoke alloy wheels are proportionally smaller to rest of its body construction. The base variant comes equipped with 205/ 65 R15 size of tyres. The rear appears little refreshing with new D pillars around the tail lamps and a spare wheel.
There are some significant panel gaps. The Quanto isn’t an attractive car. Its disproportionate design and unconventional styling could be deal breakers. The build quality is good. The Quanto is one of the heaviest crossovers, which weighs around 1, 640kgs (base variant). With compact dimensions, the Quanto is easy to drive on busy urban roads. It measures around 3985mm (length), 1850mm (width) and 1880mm (height). However, the wheelbase (2760mm) remains the same. The ground clearance is 180mm. The Mahindra Quanto is available in six colors: Rocky Beige, Diamond White, Java Brown, Toreador Red, Mist Silver and Fiery Black.
Inspired from the Xylo, the interior of the Quanto looks very familiar. The cabin feels bright and airy. The interior color and yellow upholstery are monotonous. The material quality isn’t up-to the mark. It shares the wheelbase with the Xylo, and offers a good space with ample legroom and headroom. The three-stage lumber support is excellent, which is offered for the front two rows’ passengers only. However, the under thigh support is disappointing. The third row offers limited space.
The seats are large and comfortable, but feel hard. The high seating position offers better visibility. The overall interior layout is very practical. The Quanto comes loaded with several goodies such as steering tilt adjustment, AC unit, 2-din audio system with four speakers and two tweeters support along with USB, SD card and Aux connectivity, digital display, dual airbags, ABS, reverse parking sensors, arm rests, rear wiper and more. The SUV offers a large boot space of 690-litres, after folding the third row seats.
Engine and Transmission
The Quanto derives power from a 1.5-litre diesel engine that churns out a peak power output of 100bhp @ 3750rpm with 240Nm of torque @ 1600-2800rpm. This diesel engine is a toned down version of the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine. It sports a twin-stage turbocharger, CRDi and inter-cooled technology that contribute to its overall performance and efficiency. Combined with a five-speed manual transmission, the Quanto delivers a decent fuel economy of 14kmpl on urban roads and 17.21kmpl on highways. It can accelerate 0-100kmph within 17 seconds, which is sluggish.
Performance and Handling
The driving dynamics are good, but handling isn’t inspiring. The city driving is smooth and comfortable. It shares the suspension system with the Xylo, which is frail to absorb the jerks and bumps on uneven surfaces. Therefore, the ride quality of Quanto is very bouncy on rough roads. The steering is light, but feels slow and numb. The handling is adversely affected by its huge body construction and small tyres.
The SUV performs so well in normal driving conditions at speed below 120kph. The vibrations can be felt easily when you kick start the engine. But, after warming up, it runs like a four-cylinder engine. The twin-scroll turbo minimizes the turbo lag at low RPMs. The engine refinement levels aren’t impressive. The power delivery is linear. The gearbox is long, and shift is hard. The clutch pedal is light, but requires some efforts. The body roll is extremely high.
The braking performance is mediocre. The brakes are responsive and prompt. Having advanced ABS (Antilock braking system) support, the Quanto delivers confident and safe driving experience. The pedal feels soft, but is powerful enough to handle the panic braking situations.
On fuel efficiency front, the Quanto proves to be a very promising product. The 1.5-litre diesel engine combined with a five-speed manual transmission delivers an impressive mileage of 14kmpl in city and 17.21kmpl on highways.
The Mahindra Quanto comes equipped with a plenty of safety features such as ABS (Anti-lock braking system), EBD, dual front airbags, seat belts, fog lamps, engine immobilizer and more. The electric power assisted steering and braking system help with the safety concern of the car. However, the huge body construction and small tyres aren’t supportive.
The Mahindra Quanto is one of the most practical and spacious vehicles in its segment, but isn’t good at handling and driving. Despite sharing the platform with the Xylo, the Quanto manages to look distinct and more masculine. But, the unconventional styling is something that works against it. The cabin is spacious, but material quality doesn’t meet expectations. The ride is bumpy. The handling isn’t impressive too. The Quanto is easy to drive in city traffic. The overall drivability is good, but there is significant body roll. The Quanto is a perfect pick for the people who are more concerned to the cabin space, fuel efficiency and of course the pricing.
Mahindra Quanto Vs Renault Duster
The Mahindra Quanto isn’t a good-looking vehicle. The SUV received some significant changes over the Xylo, but those aren’t enough to give it an appealing look. The SUV would look more like a compact MPV/MUV without rear-wheel mounted spare wheel. The Duster is an obvious winner here. Its contemporary and exciting styling addresses the young buyers.
The interior of the Quanto can be admired for its practical layout and spaciousness only. The material quality is awful. The seats are large, but hard upholstery is an issue. The first two rows are comfortable with enormous legroom, but third one is miserable. The Duster looks premium from inside as well. Loaded with various sophisticated features, the Duster offers a great sense of comfort and ease. The material quality is excellent. Its wheelbase is shorter than the Quanto, but space isn’t a problem.
The 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, common rail direct injection K9K diesel engine of the Duster is more powerful , frugal and efficient than the Quanto’s 1.5-litre twin turbocharged mCR100 diesel unit. In terms of handling and drivability, the Duster is one of the best cars in its league. The suspension system is mature and robust. The body roll is well-controlled. Whereas, the Quanto fails to impress with its bumpy ride quality, frail suspension and high body roll.
On the pricing front, it’s the Quanto that takes a lead over the Duster. The base variants of both the SUVs vary with a gap of Rs. 2 lakh. The Mahindra Quanto is available within price range of Rs. 5.99 lakh – Rs. 7.57 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), while the Duster costs around Rs. 7.99 lakh – Rs. 11.29 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
