Latest on Mahindra Quanto: 28 June, 2015
One of leading players in the country’s UV segment, automaker Mahindra has spotted by sources conducting road test on their compact Utility vehicle Quanto in Bengaluru. As seen in test mules, the vehicle is expected to receive a considerable amount of upgrades. One such upgrade being in form of DRLs. Mahindra Quanto spotted undergoing road test, likely to get DRLs in production v The upcoming Quanto facelift is expected to be powered by the same 1.5 Liter three-cylinder diesel engine that has been serving the current fleet.
Mahindra Quanto, a Mpv/Muv has 4 versions available in India. Mahindra Quanto has 4 Diesel cars. Other popular cars in the similar price range of Mahindra Quanto are Mahindra Thar, Renault Duster and Ford EcoSport. Mahindra Quanto comes in 6 colours, namely, Diamond White, Fiery Black, Java Brown, Mist Silver, Rocky Beige, Toreador Red.
The Mahindra Quanto, launched in 2012, is a compact SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle). Based on the Xylo platform, the SUV shares a great resemblance with its sibling. However, it received new headlights, bulged bonnet, slight knob ton top-side of the front grill and other styling elements. Unlike other Mahindra car models, the Quanto has a disproportionate design and unconventional styling that might turn-off buyers. The interior styling is inspired by the Xylo. It’s well-equipped and very practical. There is ample legroom and headroom for front and middle rows occupants. The material quality, however, is poor. Powering the SUV is a 100bhp, 1.5-litre diesel engine, which is a downsized version of the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel powertrain. It’s one of the most fuel efficient Mahindra cars in India. Mated with a 5-speed manual gearbox, it offers an impressive fuel economy of 17.21kmpl. Handling isn’t inspiring, and ride is bouncy on rough surfaces. However, the city drivability is good. The steering isn’t prompt, and needs more efforts. Body roll is a significant issue.

The various fuel trims in Mahindra Quanto are priced differently. The Diesel trims are priced between Rs. 6,44,594/- to Rs. 7,93,919/-.
Sharing platform with the Xylo, the Quanto looks identical to its sibling. It has robust body built, but design is disproportionate. The front-end features new headlights, pronounced bonnet and slight knob on top-side of the front grill. The 15-inches alloys are proportionally puny for its hefty body built. The new D pillars around the tail lamps and a spare wheel enhance its rear profile.
Interior, too, is inspired from the Xylo. It’s quite spacious, and offers ample legroom and headroom. The three-stage lumber support of the first two seats are quite impressive, but lack under thigh support. The third row seat is good for kids only. The material quality needs an improvement. Just like other Mahindra car models, the SUV offers several entertainment and comfort-enhancing features such as AC unit, 2-din audio system with USB, SD card and Aux connectivity, AC unit, reverse parking sensors, steering tilt adjustment, digital display, arm rests, etc.
Engine and Transmission
The Quanto is powered with a 1.5-litre diesel engine, a toned down version of the 2.2-litre mHawk power-unit, is boosted with a twin-stage turbocharger, CRDi and inter-cooled technology. It develops a maximum power of 100bhp at 3750rpm with a peak torque of 240Nm between 1600-2800rpm. It is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Performance and Handling
The SUV runs smoothly on city roads. The massive body built and puny tyres spoil its handling. Ride, too, is very bouncy. The steering is light, but lazy and numb. Engine refinement levels could have been better. However, the power delivery is linear. Gearbox is long, and shifting isn’t smooth. Clutch pedal requires extra efforts. There is substantial body roll, too.
The brakes are robust and responsive. The advanced ABS (Antilock braking system) and EBD (Electronic brake-force distribution) handle the sudden braking situations, and ensure safe drive. However, the brake pedal is soft.
The 1493 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 15 kmpl in city and 17 kmpl on highways
The SUV is loaded with plenty of safety features such as dual front airbags, ABS (Anti-lock braking system), EBD (Electronic brake-force distribution), seat belts, engine immobilizer, electric power assisted steering, fog lamps, braking system etc.
The Quanto is one of the most spacious and practical Mahindra cars in India. The affordable pricing and decent city drivability make it a perfect pick for the cost-conscious buyers.
Mahindra Quanto Vs Renault Duster
Having a disproportionate design and unconventional styling, the Quanto doesn’t look good. It’s quite spacious and practical from inside, but isn’t comfortable. The Renault Duster looks sportier, more masculine and robust than its rival. Its interior is more premium, and offers a great sense of comfort. In terms of engine performance, handling and drivability, too, the Duster scores higher than the Quanto. However, Mahindra’s SUV is cheaper than the Duster.
Note: Specifications for Quanto C8 (Diesel) have been mentioned
