History

Mahindra & Mahindra Limited (M&M) is a multinational automobile manufacturing corporation based in India. Headquarters of this home-grown automaker are situated in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It is a leading sports utility vehicle (SUV) and utility vehicle (UV) maker in India. It is also the world's largest tractor seller.

The company has its facilities in China, the United Kingdom and US. M&M was ranked 10th in India by the Brand Trust Report in India Studay 2014. It was, also, ranked 21st in the Fortuner India 500 companies in 2011. In its initial years, Mahindra car models targeted rural buyers looking for rugged vehicles. However, new breed of Mahindra cars in India then lured youth and urban enthusiasts of the country.

The company entered the two-wheeler market in 2008 by acquiring business assets of Kinetic Motor Company Limited. Later on the company acquired Reva Electric Car Company - a Bangalore based firm, followed by South Korea's fourth largest automaker - SsangYong Motor Company.

Indian Operations and Executive Managements

The key person of Mahindra & Mahindra is Anand Mahindra, who is the Chariman and Managing Director. The other important personalities involved in the top management are Pawan Goeka, Executive Director & President, Automotive & Farm Equipment sectors, and Yoo-il Lee, President and CEO, Ssangyong Motor Company.

Mahindra & Mahindra has four production and assembly plants in the country. The company also has a facility in Bangalore, Karnataka, India for the production of electric cars under Reva brand. Its Chakan, Maharashtra manufacturing unit is used for the development of Maxximo, XUV500, PiK-Up and SsangYong Rexton. The country's top-selling sports utility vehicle, the Bolero is manufactured in Haridwar, Uttrakhand. The company's fourth facility is situated in Nasik, Maharashtra where several Mahindra car models, such as Thar, Xylo, Quanto, Bolero, Scorpio, Pik-Up, Verito and XUV500, are developed. The company also develops several military vehicles. Just so you know, the company started developing military ehicles in 1947 with the importation of the Willys Jeep which was used in the World War II. The company also has a joint venture with BAE Systems, Defence Land Systems India.

Products and Services

Mahindra & Mahindra, the homegrown automaker has a large dealership network across the nation. The company has over 300 dealerships and 614 touch points across 240 cities in the country. Moreover, Mahindra also has a total of 1,300 up-country outlets in 900 semi-urban and rural areas across the country.  Mahindra & Mahindra saw a huge scope in the used car business and entered this market by forming a new brand - Mahindra First Choice. The company believes that the used car market will be bigger than the new car market in future and is growing at faster rate than the new car. Mahindra also ventured into motorsports racing. Mahindra Racing was the first Indian team that participated in the FIM MotoGP World Motorcycle Racing Championship and the FIAT Formula E Championship. Moreover, Mahindra Racing also entered the Italian National Motorcycle Racing Championship in 2012.

Environmental Initiatives

Mahindra & Mahindra acquired a majority stake in Bangalore based electric car maker - Reva Electric Car Company, which shows the company's intent towards alternative and green car technology. The company acquired 55.2 per cent in Reva, adding passenger cars to the company's electric vehicle portfolio that includes, Bijlee and Maxximo. The company also introduced the Mahindra e2o pure electric car, which is currently manufactured at the company's Bangalore manufacturing unit. Moreover, the maker is also readying Verito Electric and Halo electric sports car, which were showcased at 2014 Delhi Motor Show.

Founder & First Car

Mahindra & Mahindra was the steel trading company in its initial days in Ludhiana as Mahindra & Mohammed by brothers K.C. Mahindra and J.C. Mahindra and Malik Ghulam Mohammed. After Independence, the company changed its name to Mahindra & Mahindra in 1948. The company entered the larger utility vehicle manufacturing in the country with the iconic Willys Jeep. The manufacturer later ventured into development of light commercial vehicles and tractors, and returned to utility vehicle manufacturing in 1991.

Mahindra & Mahindra is known for making affordable utility vehicles in the country. The company has a strong dealership network, with strong hold in semi-urban and rural regions. Most of the company's sales come from rural areas, as its products are known for handling rugged road conditions in a better way. The country's top-selling Bolero SUV is the preferred choice in rural India. Moreover, the fuel efficient Mahindra cars including Verito twins, e2o electric and Scorpio SUV also play an important role in the positive growth of homegrown maker in the highly competitive environment. Though almost all the Mahindra cars are known for offering high mileage, the most fuel efficient Mahindra Cars are - Verito Vibe, Quanto and Bolero.

Resale

Mahindra & Mahindra has a pre-owned car business with individual authorized dealerships under its sub-brand, Mahindra First Choice Wheels. Due to strong demand for SUVs in rural areas, the resale values of some of the Mahindra cars in India including Bolero and Scorpio are relatively good compared to other cars in their respective league. Moreover, the fuel efficient Mahindra cars also have decent resale value in the market.

Competition

Mahindra & Mahindra is currently the fourth largest passenger car manufacturer in India, but it is facing tough fight from carmakers like Honda, Toyota and Ford. The company is planning to add more sports utility and utility vehicles in its lineup to increase its market share.

Mahindra & Mahindra, the home-grown auto giant, launched the facelifted Bolero in 2012 with vital exterior and interior updates and mechanical modification. The Bolero is one of the top-selling Mahindra cars in India, since its launch. The new model looks more masculine and outgoing than its predecessor. It features a honeycomb shaped mesh and grille, new large headlamps, modified bumper with integrated fog lamps, new rear wiper and tail lamps. However, the side profile remains unchanged. The SUV is now available in new exterior color options. Interior, too, is more comfortable and feature-rich than the old model.

The Mahindra Quanto, launched in 2012, is a compact SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle). Based on the Xylo platform, the SUV shares a great resemblance with its sibling. However, it received new headlights, bulged bonnet, slight knob ton top-side of the front grill and other styling elements. Unlike other Mahindra car models, the Quanto has a disproportionate design and unconventional styling that might turn-off buyers. The interior styling is inspired by the Xylo. The Thar is one of the most powerful and affordable Mahindra cars in India. Launched in 2009, the Xylo soon became one the top-selling Mahindra cars in India. Though the its sales started dropping later on due to rising competition in the segment. So to remain in competition, Mahindra updated the MUV (Multi Utility Vehicle) in 2012 and 2014. The new model received few exterior and interior updates and a tweaked suspension for better ride quality. The MUV got new chrome strip on the hood, roof rails, new alloys, new body decals, revised tail gate with chrome garnish and slightly modified tail lights.
