Hyundai Motors launched Santro, one of its most successful cars, in 1998, two years after it set its foot in Indian automobile market. Santro, popular hatchback, was the Indian version of Hyundai Atos. Hyundai positioned Santro in the B segment and targeted the Maruti 800 users. The new Santro Xing was launched in 2003 with stunning design changes in its existing model of Santro, which includes muscular exteriors and attractive luxurious interiors. Before the launch of Santro Xing, Hyundai launched Santro Zipplus, which targeted the age group between 35 years and 45 years.

New front radiator grille, the rear spoiler and the full wheel cover delivers an appealing and sporty look to the new Santro Xing. Besides, with metallic touches at few locations and brown scheme colour, the new Santro Xing adds elegance and style to the existing ultimate looks. This car has been launched in five models, namely Santro Xing Non A/C, Santro Xing GL Plus, Santro Xing GLS, Santro Xing GL Plus – LPG and Santro Xing GLS – LPG.

All the LPG variants are available with dual fuel injection like LPG and petrol. One can also opt for a CNG kit by paying an additional amount of Rs. 55000. The Santro Xing has a good fuel economy and has less maintenance cost. This model is a perfect car for small family. It has a fine leg room in the rear portion of the car and the headroom of the car is also good.  

Hyundai Santro Xing Launch History

After Maruti launched Alto and Wagon R and Tata came up with Indica, Hyundai completely changed Santro and came up with Santro Xing on May 22 in the year 2003. Launch advertisement of Santro Xing featured Bollywood icon Shahrukh Khan and Kim Sharma. The new Santro Xing in India targeted the youth in the age group of 25 years to 30 years.

With an aim to catch the attention of young buyers, Hyundai roped in Preity Zinta as their brand ambassador. The new commercial of Santro Xing described it as the 'Sunshine Car', which communicated fresh and youthful attitude. The new Santro Xing is offered with improved interiors and more safety measures within the variant.

Hyundai entered into the Indian automobile market with the launch of Santro. Santro was earlier known as Atos and at that time, the main competitor of Santro was Maruti Suzuki Zen. Older models of Santro were replaced by the Santro Xing in the year 2003, which became an instant hit among Indian buyers.

In the present automobile market, the main rivals of Santro Xing are Suzuki Wagon R and Maruti Zen Estilo. Santro was launched in the Pakistan and Malaysia, in the year 2000 and 2006, respectively. First Santro was introduced in the year 1997 and it incorporated 999cc engine. It was succeeded by a facelift version, which was launched in the year 2000.

On an average, the price of the Santro Xing price ranges between Rs. 2.8 lacs and Rs. 4.5 lacs. The price range of this car varies between different states, depending on the taxation policy adopted by the government of that state. Different variants of this car have different cost, depending upon their features and specifications.

Price of Santro Xing Non A/C (Solid) ranges between Rs.2.8 lacs and Rs.3 lacs, while the metallic variant of this model ranges between Rs.2.80 lacs to 3 lacs. Santro Xing GL Plus (Solid) is priced between the range of Rs.3.40 lacs and Rs.3.60 lacs, whereas the metallic variant of this model ranges between Rs.3.50 lacs and Rs.3.7 lacs.

Santro Xing GLS (Solid) is placed in the price brackets of Rs.3.6 lacs and Rs.3.8 lacs. The metallic variant of Santro Xing GLS, costs around Rs.3.70 lacs to Rs.3.9 lacs. LPG variant of Santro Xing GLS (Solid) costs around Rs.3.85 lacs to Rs.4 lacs, whereas the price metallic variant of this model ranges between Rs.3.9 lacs and Rs.4.05 lacs. One can also opt for the CNG variant of any model, which is available for an additional cost of Rs.55000. 


New Santro Xing is one of the best cars in the hatchback segment. The price which is quoted for both, the basic and top model of this variant is much lower than its other competitors of this segment. Santro also bagged the first position in the compact car segment in the VDS (Vehicle Dependability Study), which was conducted by the JD Power Asia Pacific 2008. This car has topped the JD Power Asia Pacific IQS (initial Quality Study) for three years in a row, for the years 2000, 2001 and 2002. Furthermore, Hyundai Santro has also topped JD Power Asia Pacific APEAL Study, which measured customer satisfaction for three consecutive years 2000, 2001 and 2002. 

Used Car Market

New Hyundai Santro Xing entered in the market in the year 2003. One may not find the latest variants of Hyundai Santro Xing, but previous variants are also not bad for any account. Till now, Hyundai company has not started any authorised dealership into used car markets like Maruti Suzuki True Value stores and Mahindra First Choice. The most harshly exploited parts of a car are its suspensions, tyres and upholstery and one have to take a close look before taking the possession of the car.


Hyundai Santro Xing is launched in the market with 1.1 litres, four cylinder, SOHC, petrol engine. This engine delivers a displacement of 1086cc and maximum power of 63 bhp at 5500 rpm. The maximum torque of the engine is maintained at 91 Nm at 4000 rpm. Gearbox of this model is integrated with a five speed manual transmission. This car has been incorporated with front ventilated disc brakes and rear drum brakes.

The front portion of the car comprises McPherson Strut suspensions with coil spring. Rear suspensions of Santro Xing are Torsion Beam Axle with coil spring. The front brakes of this model comprise ventilated disc and the rear ones have drum brakes. As per ARAI, the petrol variant of this car delivers an average of 17.92 kmpl, while the LPG variant delivers a mileage of 11.88 kmpl.

The overall length of Santro Xing is 3565 mm, while its width is 1525 mm. Height of all the variants of this car is 1590 mm. Exterior Appearance

Front fascia of new Santro Xing is highlighted with big and clear headlamps that have improved visibility and aesthetic appeal. These headlamps not only add beauty to the car  but also result in safe night driving in all weather conditions. For enhancing the overall front profile of the car, body coloured radiator grille has been added. New Santro Xing comes with detachable bumper inserts that are easy and economic to replace.

Bumper of the Santro Xing is wrapped in body colour to deliver a sporty look. The side profile of the car has been accentuated by waistline moulding, which also prevents the body form the damage of ricks and dents. Full wheel cover also adds to the stylish side looks of this car. The broad waistline of this car is wrapped in black colour.

Like front view, the rear view of Santro Xing is also elegant, as it comprises well-designed boot lid and tail lamps. The rear spoiler of the car contributes to aerodynamic stability of the vehicle during high speed.

The new Santro Xing is offered with two tone beige and with brown interiors. Combined effect of two tone seat upholstery and beige with brown interior is fabulous. The inner cabin is re-designed and some of the new features have also been incorporated.

The instrument panel of the Santro Xing has very common design but the white background in all the three dials and the red coloured needles look impressive. Santro Xing has front speaker grille in the dashboard and the rear grille is located as standard feature in all the variants. Dashboard of this car is black and the steering column of the car is heat absorbing.

New design AC vents housed in silver finish panel add to elegance of the interiors. 1 DIN audio player with blue illumination is added as the optional feature in the new Santro Xing. The three spoke power steering of this car is done in dashboard colour. Door trim with fabric insert, front map lamp, cup holders and parcel tray are some of the other features of the interiors of Santro Xing cars.

Interior Comfort

New Hyundai Santro Xing is a comfortable that has been designed to accommodate five passengers. Both the front rows and back rows have ample of legroom, hip room, shoulder room and headroom. The second row seats that are designed for seating of three passengers, are integrated with headrests.

New Santro Xing comes with an optional DIN audio player, which can play CD/MP3, AUX and has a USB connectivity. The three spoke power steering of this car offers a smooth and easy driving. The power plant of the Santro Xing is packed with Active Intelligence Technology that comprises three innovative systems, including rotary head intelligent valve actuator and differentially programmed intelligent injection. It ensures optimum fuel distribution to various driving requirements of the engine which results in better mileage and power. With the support of all these factors, the Hyundai Santro Xing delivers mileage of 13.7 kmpl in city and 17.8 kmpl on highways.

The LPG variant of this model offers an average of 11.88 kilometres per hour. Hyundai Santro Xing is also available with a option of LPG and CNG variants and with LPG fuel, the car gives an average of 11.88 kilometres per litre.

On Road Drive

Hyundai Santro Xing runs magnificently on the city as well as highway roads.  Front suspensions are incorporated with McPherson Strut with coil spring, while the rear suspensions are Torsion Beam Axle with coil spring, which tackles many of the potholes efficiently. The cabin of the Hyundai Santro Xing is little noisy at high speeds, throughout the drive.

Five speed manual transmission enables the engine to attain the speed of more than 100 kilometres per hour. Braking system of the car is also fine as it has been equipped with ventilated discs at front and drum brakes in the rear. Owing to the smooth power steering wheel, soft gear shift knob and aerodynamic design of newSantro Xing ensures great handling and comfort.


New Hyundai Santro Xing is packed with 1.1 litre, SOHC, 4 cylinder, 1086cc, petrol engine. Engine of the Hyundai Santro Xing is integrated with a five speed manual transmission. Competitor Analysis

Due to the growing demand of Hyundai Santro Xing, many of its competitors have arrived in the Indian automobile market. Some of them include Maruti Suzuki A- Star, Tata Indica Xeta and Chevrolet Spark. The engine of Hyundai Santro Xing is better than the Maruti Suzuki A- Star, since the displacement of Santro Xing is 1086cc, which is more than the A-Star, which is 998cc. LPG/CNG version
