Latest on Hyundai i10: 04 July, 2014

Hyundai's popular hatchback in India, well known as Grand i10, has just been launched in Germany in a sporty version rechristened as i10 Sport. The hatchback has been exclusively custom made for the German market at an attractive price tag of about EUR 13,990 (Rs 11.4 lakh). The engine configuration has been retained, whereas the suspension has been lowered by 20mm.

Summary

Hyundai i10, a Hatchback has 5 versions available in India. Hyundai i10 has 4 Petrol cars. Other popular cars in the similar price range of Hyundai i10 are Ford Figo, Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 1.0 and Maruti Suzuki Swift. Hyundai i10 comes in 5 colours, namely, Pure White, Silky Beige, Sleek Silver, Stardust, Wine Red.

The i10, launched in 2007, has always been among the top-selling Hyundai cars in India. The hatchback received some major exterior updates and new features in 2010. The new Grand i10 is the global successor of the i10, which was launched in 2013. However both the new and old models are on sale in India.

As mentioned above the i10 last received an update in 2010, when it received a new grille, a large mesh-work beneath air-dam and slightly different headlamps. The rear too receives changes in the form of revised bumper, new tail-lamps and few other features. Interior, too, looks premium. The old black/ beige dashboard is now browner with metal finished centre console. It offers new fabric seat upholstery and few additional features. The hatch is available in just one petrol engine - a 68.05bhp, 1.1-litre iRDE2 unit. A 5-speed manual is the only transmission option on offer. It’s among the most fuel efficient Hyundai cars in India. The engine refinement levels are high. It’s easy to drive, though the ride gets bouncy on uneven roads. Handling is decent.

Price

The various fuel trims in Hyundai i10 are priced differently. The Petrol trims are priced between Rs. 4,32,052/- to Rs. 4,87,156/-. The LPG trims of Hyundai i10 start at Rs. 5,16,756/-.

Exterior

The updated model looks sportier and more outgoing than its predecessor. The front fascia features a new theme grill, a new hexagonal front grille, aggressive headlights and a mesh-work beneath air dam. Alloys wheels are evidently absent. The rear gets a modified rear bumper, a new tail lamp and a beep only reverse guide system.

Interior

Just like many Hyundai car models, the hatch offers best-in-class interior. It’s spacious and well-packed. A new brown dashboard with metal finished centre console looks good.

Engine & Transmission

The hatchback is available in one petrol engine - a 1.1-litre petrol engine. The 1.1-litre iRDE2 (Intelligent Responsive Drive Engine) petrol engine develops a maximum power of 68.05bhp with a peak torque of 99.04Nm. All the variants come equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Performance and Handling

The hatch is easy to drive on narrow and congested city roads. The ride is bumpy for rear seat passenger on rough roads, but acceptable. Engines are highly-refined and calm, but gets loud above 5, 000rpm. Steering is light and very responsive.

Braking System

Braking performance is pretty impressive. The brake pedal is spongy, and needs to be tuned more. It gets standard front disc brakes and rear drum brakes.

Mileage

The 1086 cc LPG - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 18 kmpl in city and 20 kmpl on highways, while the Petrol variant offers a mileage of 18 kmpl on urban roads and 20 kmpl and freeways, respectively.

Safety Features

The hatchback comes equipped with basic safety features such as engine immobilizer, central locking and day and night inside rear view mirror.

Verdict

The Hyundai i10 is a nice city car. It offers best-in-class interior with practical and comfortable ride. The engine, too, is very refined

Competition

Hyundai i10 Vs Maruti Suzuki Celerio

The new Hyundai i10 looks sporty and very outgoing. The Celerio has neat exterior styling and looks simple. With best-in-class interior and plenty of features, Hyundai’s hatchback takes a lead over its rival. The i10’s iRDE2 engine is more refined and rev-happy than the Celecrio’s 1.0-litre K10 engine.
