Hyundai Grand i10 hatchback is the new trend-setter in the Indian automotive industry, awarded with the prestigious “The Car of the Year” award. Aiming to strengthen their grip over the B2 hatchback segment, the Korean automaker - Hyundai introduced the new Grand i10 with all new styling, better handling and performance. Based on the Hyundai’s popular fluidic design philosophy, the Grand i10 appears to be very sporty and outgoing. The hatchback shares a resemblance with Hyundai i10, but the extended dimensions distinguish it from its younger sibling.

Hyundai is recognized for offering best-in-class interior, and the new Grand i10 isn’t an exception here. Focusing on the cabin space and comfort, the company offered the new Hyundai Grand i10 with longer wheelbase and rich features such as climate control unit, driver seat height adjustment, rear parking sensors, audio system, tilt-steering, steering mounted audio controls, rear AC vents (first-in-the-segment) and many more. To do well against its rivals like Maruti Ritz, Ford Figo and Chevrolet Beat, Hyundai introduced the Grand i10 in diesel engine option as well. The hatchback derives power from a new 1.1-litre, three-cylinder diesel engine that produces a maximum power output of 71bhp and 160Nm of peak torque. What makes it a more alluring deal is the fuel efficiency. The hatchback offers a class-leading mileage of 24kmpl.

The 1.2-litre four-cylinder, kappa petrol unit produces a peak power of 80bhp with 112Nm of torque. It’s the same engine that does duty to Hyundai i20, and offers an ARAI certified fuel efficiency of 18.9kmpl. Both the engines are offered with a five-speed manual transmission, the petrol version also has a four-speed automatic gearbox on offer. These powertrains are rev-happy, and deliver a comfortable and practical ride quality. In terms of driving dynamics, the hatchback gives a head-to-head competition to Maruti Swift. Available in four trims - Asta, Era, Sportz and Magna, the new Grand i10 is priced between Rs. 4.45 lakh to Rs. 7 lakh.

Hyundai is very confident about its Fluidic design philosophy, and the all new Grand i10 speaks the same design language. Wearing contemporary styling elements, new curves and finer details, the hatchback addresses young generation. The large headlamps, hexagonal lower air-vent, angular fog-lamps, single-slat grille and small chin bumper enhance the front fascia of the car. While, the bold side creases, pull-type door handles, stylish roof rails with a compact antenna and 14-inches diamond cut alloy wheels manage its side profile.

The dual-tone 8 spoke rims are covered with 165/ 65 R14 size of tubeless tyres that contribute to the overall handling and ride quality of the hatchback. The rear also received some significant changes such as new wraparound tail-lamps, large reflectors, new rear bumper and bold shoulder lines. With overall dimensions of 1520mm (height) 3765mm (length), 1660mm (width), the Hyundai Grand i10 appears bigger than the European i10. The Hyundai Grand i10 is available in eight vibrant shades: Panthom Black, Wine Red, Golden Orange, Twilight Blue, Silky Beige, Star Dust, Sleek Sliver and Pure White.

The Grand i10 offers the best interior in this segment. The matured design and rich material quality appeal at the first glance. The fit and finish is superb. The black & beige cabin feels bright and airy. The driver seat is height adjustable with excellent lateral and under-thigh support. There is ample legroom, headroom and shoulder room. The steering wheel is good to use. The instrumental cluster is simple and easy to read. First-in-the-segment, the Grand i10 comes integrated with 1GB (863MB usable) onboard storage. However, the rear defogger is offered with its top-end variant only.

The Grand i10 brings an immense pleasure of comfort and convenience, which comes equipped with a plenty of features such as OEM audio system with USB, Bluetooth, AUX and CD supports, premium leather upholstery, climate unit with front and first-in-the-segment rear AC vents, stylish dashboard with integrated central console, a glove box, leather wrapped gear-shift knob and steering wheel, electrically adjustable ORVM, a smart key access and more. The 256-litre boot space is enough large to carry two-three luggage.

Engine and Transmission

The 1120cc, 1.1-litre, three-cylinder, common-rail diesel engine delivers a maximum power of 70bhp @ 4000rpm with 160Nm of torque @ 1500-2750rpm. A cast-iron block with an aluminum head and balancer shaft contribute to overall efficiency and performance of the engine. The Grand i10 diesel takes a lead over the Maruti Swift by delivering a class-leading fuel economy of 24kmpl.

The Grand i10 petrol shares the engine with Hyundai i10, and comes powered with a 1.2-litre four-cylinder, kappa petrol unit. It delivers a peak power of 80bhp with 112Nm of torque. This power-mill offers a fuel economy of 18.9kmpl. Both the engines are available in a five-speed manual transmission; the petrol model can be bought in a four-speed automatic gearbox as well.

Performance and Handling

The diesel engine of Grand i10 behaves so well, and refinement levels are excellent. When you start the engine, vibration can be easily felt in the cabin. However, it is well controlled once motor catches-up the speed. The acceleration is very smooth. The power delivery is linear, and turbo lag is negligible. The NVH levels are well-controlled. The engine is quiet too. The Grand i10 diesel offers an effortless driving pleasure on urban roads.

The petrol engine delivers a satisfactory torque and power output. It’s revv-happy, but gets punchy in mid-range.  The refinement levels are impressive. It behaves so well even at idle. The front McPherson Strut and rear twist beam type suspension system absorbs the jerks, and provides comfortable ride even on bumpy roads. However, the tyres are relatively skinnier for high-speed highway rides. Body roll too can be felt at times, but turning radius is small. The acceleration and pick-up of both the engines are good. The diesel engine is more practical, while the petrol unit is revv-happy.

Braking System

The Braking performance is truly flawless.  The hatchback comes boosted with the conventional disc brakes at the front wheels and drum brakes at the rear wheels. The matured front McPherson Strut and rear twist beam type suspension system helps the car to absorb the jerks on rough and uneven surfaces. What makes braking even better is the advanced anti-lock braking system, offered with the car.

On fuel efficiency front, the new Hyundai Grand i10 seems to be very promising. The hatchback is available in both petrol and diesel engine options. The 1.1-litre, three-cylinder, common rail diesel unit delivers a class-leading mileage of 24kmpl. This power-unit churns out a maximum power output of 71bhp and 160Nm of peak torque.

The Grand i10 petrol derives power from a 1.2-litre four-cylinder, kappa engine that develops a peak power of 80bhp with 112Nm of torque. It offers an ARAI rated fuel economy of 18.9kmpl.

Safety Features

The Hyundai Grand i10 comes loaded with various advanced safety measures including ABS (Anti-lock braking system), EBD (Electric brake-force distribution), dual-front airbags, seat belts, reflector lamps on rear bumper and more. The responsive electric power assisted steering system, suspension and braking system, make the Grand i10 a safe car to drive. However, the skinnier 165/ 65 R14 tyres feel small at times.

The Hyundai Grand i10 is a great value for money car. Addressing the young generation, the new Hyundai Grand i10 comes with contemporary styling and best quality interior. The diesel engine offers practical drive, whereas the petrol variant feels peppier. Both the engines are efficient to deliver the class-leading fuel economy. The handling is very practical, and driving dynamics are excellent. However, the diesel engine is complained for the mediocre highway performance. The steering and gear-shift are very smooth. The advanced ABS, EBD, airbags and rear defogger safety features are optional with its mid-level variant. The new Hyundai Grand i10 is a stylish and easy to drive urban car.

The Maruti Swift and Volkswagen Polo are the two strong rivals of the new Hyundai Grand i10.

Hyundai Grand i10 Vs Maruti Swift

Based on Hyundai’s fluidic design theory, the Hyundai Grand i10 looks more stylish, sporty and outgoing, though Swift too is equally good in these departments. Hyundai aims to appeal the young generation with the contemporary styling and design language of the hatchback. As far as interior is concerned, the Maruti Swift doesn’t even come closer to the Grand i10, as the latter offers best-in-the-class fit, finish and material quality. The Grand i10 offers ample boot space, while the Swift’s boot is relatively smaller and impractical.

The Grand i10 is offered in both petrol and diesel engine option. Its diesel unit is very practical, while petrol mill is revv-happy. The refinement levels and throttle response are excellent. The gear-shift is very smooth and easy to use. The mediocre highway performance of the Grand i10 diesel is the only disappointing aspect.

The Maruti Swift offers a balanced handling and ride quality, but the smooth gearshift makes the Grand i10 more user-friendly and easy to drive car. The Hyundai Grand i10 is a safe hatchback in the segment, which comes loaded with various advanced safety measures. On the other side, the Swift comes with mediocre brakes, which are inadequate for emergency braking situations. Catching the right pulse of the Indian buyers, Hyundai made the new Grand i10 a more affordable deal than the Swift by pricing the hatchback between Rs. 4.45 lakh and Rs. 7 lakh.

Hyundai Grand i10 Vs VW Polo

The Polo is a stylish and sporty hatchback from the German automaker - Volkswagen. On the other side, the Hyundai Grand i10 appeals with its new designing curves and contemporary styling. The sporty, young and outgoing personalities of both the cars address young generation, so here it’s a matter of choice.  However, when it comes to the interior the Grand i10 takes over the VW Polo. The Grand i10 offers the best material quality, fit and finish in the segment.

With all new Grand i10, Hyundai introduced some new features first-in-the-segment such as rear AC vents and 1GB (863MB usable) onboard storage. Its cabin space and comfort are superior to the Polo. Coming to the engine powers, the VW Polo with a 1.2-litre turbo petrol and 1.2-litre & 1.6-litre diesel units fails to match the segment standards. The handling is neutral. On the other side, the practical Grand diesel and revv-happy Grand petrol powertrains deliver class-leading fuel efficiency and performance. Priced between Rs. 4.45 lakh to Rs. 7 lakh, the Hyundai Grand i10 is easy on pocket, whereas, the Volkswagen Polo costs around Rs. 5.17 lakh to Rs. 8.31 lakh.
