South Korean automaker Hyundai recently launched its much-hyped and awaited compact Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) Creta in the Indian market. This car has been introduced by Hyundai in competition with the likes of Mahindra Scorpio and Renault Duster. India’s largest passenger car exporter has priced this model aggressively and is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that it is a success with a starting price of Rs. 8.59 lakh.
Launched on July 21, 2015, the Creta is Hyundai’s first-ever compact SUV in the Indian market. The compact SUV is available in four trim levels - Base, S, SX and SX (O) - and three engine options - a 1.4-litre U2 CRDi diesel, 1.6-litre CRDi VGT and 1.6-litre Dual VTVT petrol. It’s the first car in its league to get an automatic transmission with diesel engine. With high-level of localization (90%), the Creta is manufactured at the Hyundai’s Chennai-based plant, and exported to global markets.
Based on HIVE body architecture, the Creta looks like a smaller version of the Santa Fe. It sports bi-functional projector headlights with LED daytime running lamps, front and rear skid plates, dual tone radiator grille and chrome finished door handles (only on top-model), ORVM, LED turn indicators on outside mirrors, side body cladding, A-Pillar piano black glossy finish, R16 Clean silver/ R17 diamond cut alloy wheels and other styling elements. The available color options are Polar White, Red Passion, Mystic Blue, Phantom Black, Sleek Silver, Stardust and Pearl Beige.

Engine & Transmission
The Creta is available with two diesel engine options -1.4-litre U2 CRDi and 1.6-litre CRDi VGT - and one petrol powertrain - 1.6-litre Dual VTVT -. All these engines are borrowed from the Verna sedan. The 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder Dual VTVT petrol engine puts out a maximum power of 121bhp at 6, 400rpm and 151Nm of torque at 4, 850rpm. The 1.4-litre diesel engine offers 89bhp at 4,000rpm with 220Nm at 1,500rpm - 2,750rpm, whereas the 1.6-litre diesel unit delivers 126bhp at 4,000rpm and 259Nm at 1,900rpm - 2,750rpm. A 6-speed manual transmission comes as standard, while a 6-speed automatic gearbox is available only on the top-end variant (SX (O)).
Performance & Handling
The Creta is the first car to feature a 6-speed automatic transmission on diesel engine (only on the 1.6-litre) in its segment. The gearbox moves smoothly, and works progressively at 2,000rpm and above. The refinement levels of the bigger 1.6-litre diesel engine are quite impressive. It drives well, and offers punchy performance. The strong mid RPM range helps the car cruise and overtake effortlessly. The power delivery is linear too. The 1.4-litre diesel and a 1.6-litre petrol engines, too, deliver impressive performance. The ride quality is good, thanks to the high-tensile HIVE body structure that composed of high strength steel. Though, the light steering and suspension affect its handling.
With strong braking capabilities, the compact SUV offers smooth and confidence-inspiring drive. The car gets front disc and rear drum brakes, anti-lock braking system and electronic stability control as the standard features. Features like vehicle stability management and hill start assist control that are available only on the top-end SX (O) variant, further aid to its braking performance.
The Creta hosts a bunch of safety features such as driver and passenger airbags, side and curtain airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic braking-force distribution (EBD), vehicle stability management (VSM), Hill start assist control (HAC), rear parking sensors, rear camera with steering adaptive parking guidelines display, day/ night inside rear view mirror, child seat anchor, lane change indicator and flash adjustment, impact sensing auto door unlock and height adjustable front seatbelts. Although, one must note that aforementioned features vary variant-wise. The compact SUV is built on HIVE body structure that provides it strength and rigidity.
The Hyundai Creta is a well-built, feature-rich and comfortable car. It’s easy-to-drive, and offers composed ride. Though, it’s slightly pricier than its closest rival.
The Hyundai Creta will take on the likes of Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano, and Maruti Suzuki S-Cross.
