History

Hindustan Motors is one of the oldest car manufacturers in the Indian automotive market. Based in Kolkata, West Bengal, the company is a part of Birla Technical Services industrial group. Before the arrival of Maruti Udyog, HM was the largest car manufacturer in the country. The company’s most successful product has been the iconic Ambassador car. Based on 1956 Morris Oxford Series III, the iconic car was in production for over 7 long decades (1957-2014).

Founded in 1942 by Mr. B.M. Birla, Hindustan Motors was the country's biggest carmaker until 1980s. The iconic Ambassador car is widely used as taxi cab and as government transportation. It started in Port Okha near Gujarat, and in 1948, the maker moved to Uttarpara, West Bengal. Hindustan Motors and General Motors had signed various agreements to produce Bedford Trucks, Vauxhall Motors, Allison Transmission and off-road equipment. In 1994, GM and Hindustan produced Opel Astra cars in India. GM purchased the Halol, Gujarat manufacturing unit from HM in 1999.

Hindustan Motors also collaborated with Isuzu to develop engines and transmission for the Contessa in late 1980s at Pithambur near Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The company also assembled and sold Isuzu F Series- JCS trucks in India in the early 1990s. The homegrown automaker has a joint venture with Mitsubishi, which was started in 1998. HM is assembling Mitsubishi cars at its Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu plant. The company produced various Mitsubishi cars in India including Lancer, Cedia, Pajero, Montero and Outlander.

Indian Operations and Executive Managements

Hindustan Motors appointed Mr. Uttam Bose as Director of the company on May 10, 2014. He joined the homegrown automaker as its Managing Director on April 2, 2012. Mr. Moloy Chowdhary took over as Chief Executive Officer on May 10, 2014.

Hindustan Motors has its manufacturing unit in Uttarapara. The plant, which started operations in 1948, is currently producing passenger cars and light commercial vehicle 1-tonne payload mini-truck HM Winner. This production unit was producing the Ambassador (1500 and 2000 cc diesel, 1800 cc petrol and CNG & LPG variants) in the passenger car segment. This is the first facility in India, which is popularly known as Hind Motor, also produces automotive and forged components. The other manufacturing units of the company are Pithampur, Madhya Prades, Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu and Hosur, Tamil Nadu.

Hindustan Motors is currently assembling Mitsubishi cars in the Indian car market. The company is also indulged into Earthmoving Equipments, tractors & bulldozers, and engine manufacturing.

Environmental Initiatives

Hindustan Motors is yet to launch the electric or hybrid cars in the country. The company has recently phased out the iconic Ambassador, which was earlier available in three fuel options (Diesel, Petrol & CNG). It is expected that Hindustan Motors will launch electric or hybrid Mitsubishi cars in India.

Founder & First Car

Hindustan Motors Limited (HML), India's automotive manufacturing company and the flagship Company of C.K. Birla Group was established before Indian Independence in 1942 by Mr. B.M. Birla of the industrialist Birla family. The company started its operations in a small assembly plant in Port Okha near Gujarat, and later moved to Uttarpara, West Bengal in 1948. This facility was producing the iconic Ambassador. Hindustan Motors and Mitsubishi Motors Plant is located in Tiruvallur near Chennai. Hindustan Motors & General Motors had various tie-ups post-independence to produce Bedford Trucks, Vauxhall Motors, Allison Transmission and off-road equipment. The JV also produced Opel Astra cars in the country. GM purchased the Halol, Gujarat pklant from HM in 1999. HM used to make earthmovers initially in collaboration with Terex, USA and Fermac UK and later with Caterpillar Inc. since 1984 at the HMEED plants in Thiruvallur near Chennai and Pondicherry. The company then formed a JV with Isuzu to manufacture engines and transmission for the Contessa in late 1980s. Hindustan Motors has a joint venture with Mitsubishi Motors that wa signed in 1998. The company produced various cars at its Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu facility including Lancer, Cedia, Pajero, Montero and Outlander.

USP

Hindustan Motors cars in India is popular as taxi cab and transportation facility for politicians. Its iconic Ambassador was phased out in 2014, but the vehicle is, still, loved for its tough styling and spacious interiors. Though almost all the Hindustan Motors cars are known for offering high mileage, the most fuel efficient Hindustan Motors Car is Ambassador.

Resale Value

Hindustan Motors’ iconic Ambassador was phased out from our market in 2014. This vehicle serves as a limousine for politicians and as taxi cab. The resale value of HM car model is pretty decent.
