Hindustan Motors is an automobile manufacturer, which was established in the year 1942 by Mr. B.M. Birla at Port Okha in Gujarat. This is a flagship venture by CK Birla Group, which is a multibillion dollar company. The business operations of Hindustan Motors Company were moved to Uttarpara in district Hooghly, West Bengal in the year 1948. At that plant the Hindustan Motors Company began the production of its iconic Ambassador.

The manufacturing unit of the company is equipped with advanced facilities such as press shop, forge shop, foundry, machine shop, strong R&D wing and aggregate assembly units for axles and engines. At the Uttarpara plant, the Hindustan Motors Company currently manufactures the Ambassador in the passenger car segment and light commercial vehicle 1-tonne payload mini-truck HM-Shifeng Winner.

Hindustan Motors Company profile suggests that it has collaboration with Mitsubishi Motors Corporation of Japan. Under the license given by the Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, the Hindustan Motors Company produces passenger cars such as Lancer, Pajero, Cedia, Montero, Outlander and Lancer Evolution X. These cars are manufactured at the third plant of the company, which is based at Thiruvallur near Chennai in Tamil Nadu. The Hindustan Motors Company has its three plants that are based at Uttarpara (West Bengal), Thiruvallur (Tamil Nadu) and Pithampur (Madhya Pradesh). 

Hindustan Motors History 

Hindustan Motors history suggests that it was founded just before the Indian independence, in the year 1942. It is one of the most pioneer automobile manufacturers of CK Birla Group, which was founded by Mr. B.M. Birla of the industrious Birla family. The business operations of the company started in small assembly plant in Port Okha near Gujarat. Later in the year 1948, the production unit of Hindustan Motors Company shifted to Uttarpara, West Bengal where it began the production of Ambassador.

During the collaboration with Terex, USA and Fermac UK in the year 1984, Hindustan Motors Company used to produce earthmover. These earthmovers were manufactured at the HMEED plants in Thiruvallur, near Chennai and Pondicherry. This business was later sold to Caterpillar in the year 2000 and Hindustan Motors Company quit the earthmover manufacturing. 

Hindustan Motors and General Motors had tie-ups to produce Bedford Trucks, Vauxhall Motors, off road equipment and Allison Transmission. In 1994, Hindustan Motors Company and General Motors formed a joint venture, which was named as General Motors India to manufacture Opel Astra cars. Later in 1999, General Motors bought the Halol Plant in Gujarat from Hindustan Motors. 

 Hindustan Motors Founder

Hindustan Motors Company was founded by Mr. BM Birla at Port Okha in Gujarat in 1942. Mr. Braj Mohan Birla, known as Mr. B.M. Birla, the founder of this company belongs to the industrious Birla family. He was one of the four sons of Raja Badeodass Birla, who founded the prestigious Birla Group. Mr. B.M. Birla was born in 1905 and he died in 1982. He played a vital role in technological and industrial advancement of India. Apart from automobile industry, he has also started several pioneering projects and institutions in prominent areas such as science, health and social welfare. 

Hindustan Motors in India

Hindustan Motors is an automobile company, which is based in India. This company was founded by Mr. B.M. Birla in 1942 at Port Okha in Gujarat. Hindustan Motors Company currently operates three manufacturing units in India that are based at Uttarpara (West Bengal), Thiruvallur (Tamil Nadu) and Pithampur (Madhya Pradesh). Hindustan Motors formed collaboration with Isuzu to produce engines and transmission for the Contessa in late 1980. This production plant was based at Pithampur near Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

Hindustan Motors Company sold 1982702 passenger cars in the year 2010-2011 and 324212 units of utility vehicles in the same year. Hindustan Motors information also suggests sale of 213507 units of multipurpose vehicles in the same financial year. 

Hindustan Motors Manufacturing Facilities

Hindustan Motors profile suggests that the company started its business activities in 1942 under the guidance of the founder Mr. B.M. Birla. The first manufacturing unit of the company was based at Port Okha near Gujarat. Later, three more manufacturing units were established at Uttarpara (West Bengal), Thiruvallur (Tamil Nadu) and Pithampur (Madhya Pradesh). In the Pithampur (Madhya Pradesh) manufacturing unit, Hindustan Motors Company produces 1800cc CNG variants of the Winner, a commercial mini truck.

The Uttarpara (West Bengal) plant started its operations in 1948 and today, this unit manufactures Ambassador in the passenger car segment and light commercial vehicles 1-tonne payload mini-truck HM-Shifeng Winner. It is the first and the only integrated automobile plant in India, which is popularly known as Hind Motor. This plant is also engaged in manufacturing automotive and forged components. The armouring division of Hindustan Motors Finance Corporation Ltd., which is a fully owned subsidiary of Hindustan Motors, is also based in the Uttarpara plant.

It is the leading bullet proof fabricators for Mitsubishi Pajero and Ambassador cars. These special cars are used in Union and State Governments, Police, Defence services and para military services. Thiruvallur (near Chennai) plant of the Hindustan Motors is a state-of-the-art manufacturing unit, which is engaged in producing premium passenger cars. This plant works in a technical collaboration with Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, which is based in Japan.

Thiruvallur plant began its operations three decades ago with the manufacturing of the earthmoving equipment like dumpers, front-end loaders and crawler tractors. From 1998, Thiruvallur plant began manufacturing of Mitsubishi Lancer, which was demanded all across the country. This manufacturing unit of Hindustan Motors has a capacity to produce 12000 vehicles per annum.

Current Car Models


The few models of Ambassador are available in BS III, which are 1.5 DSZ, 1.8 Petrol, 1.8 CNG and 2.0 DSZ. Models like 1.8 Petrol, 1.8 CNG and 1.8 LPG are also available in BS IV variants. The 1.5 DSZ consist of a four cylinder OHV, diesel engine, which has a engine displacement of 1489cc. Maximum power generated by this engine is 35.5 bhp at 4000 rpm and the maximum torque of the engine is 73 Nm at 2250 rpm. This engine runs on a five speed manual transmission, which are all synchromeshed with overdrive.

A 2.0 DSZ diesel engine is also offered in the diesel variant of the Ambassador. It has been equipped with a four cylinder, OHC diesel engine, which offers an engine displacement of 1995cc. This engine delivers maximum power of 50 bhp at 4200 rpm and the maximum torque is 106 Nm at 2200 rpm. The gearbox of this model has been equipped with a five speed manual transmission with overdrive.

Petrol variant of Ambassador is incorporated with a MPFI with four cylinders OHC, petrol engine, which has an engine displacement of 1817cc. The maximum power generated by this engine is 71 bhp at 4800 rpm and the maximum torque of the engine is 134 Nm at 2250 rpm. This engine also runs on a five speed manual transmission, which are all synchromeshed with overdrive.

Ambassador is also launched in CNG and LPG variants, in both 1.8 Litre engine. The CNG variant has been equipped with a four cylinder OHC engine, which offers an engine displacement of 1817cc. The maximum power delivered by this engine is 54 bhp at 4600 rpm and the maximum torque is 102 Nm at 3000 rpm. It has been equipped with a five speed manual transmission, which includes overdrive. The LPG variant of Ambassador consists OHC, MPFI, LPG engine, which has an engine displacement of 1817cc. The maximum power delivered by the engine is 65 bhp at 4700 rpm and the maximum torque of the engine is 129.5 Nm at 2000 rpm. 


VEER is a small commercial vehicle that weighs 800 kg. This model of the Hindustan Motors is built on the Ambassador platform, but incorporates changes in the suspension and transmission systems that are required for a strong load carrier. It is available in both CNG and diesel variants and is launched in two models, namely VEER and VEER LX.

The VEER has a load tray, which is separated from the front cabin, while the VEER LX’s load tray is integrated within the front cabin of the vehicle. This model is powered by a 1.5 litre diesel engine, which is capable of churning out power of 35 bhp power. On the other hand, Hindustan Veer LX is packed with 1.8-litre CNG engine, which produces a full throttle power of 55bhp. 


Winner is a small truck, which is powered by a 1.8L CNG engine and features two CNG tanks each of 65 litre capacity. This model of Hindustan Motors can travel up to 350 kilometres or 217 miles through a single tank. It has high ground clearance, bigger tyres, big cargo box and enough power for air conditioning. Due to its compact size, Winner can easily enter into narrow lanes. This model is offered in the market with several variants, including 1.5 L diesel engine.  


Lancer is the perfect sedan, which is incorporated with everything, which a customer always wanted. This model is offered in both petrol as well as diesel variants. The petrol variant of this car is incorporated with a four cylinder, in-line SOHC, 12 valve MPI engine. On the other hand, the diesel variant is incorporated with a four cylinder, in-line SOHC, eight valve IDI engine.

The displacement delivered by the petrol variant is 1468cc, while the displacement delivered by diesel engine is 1998cc. The maximum power generated by the petrol engine is 85.81 bhp at 5500 rpm, whereas the power churned by diesel engine is 67.07 bhp at 4500 rpm. The maximum torque of petrol variant is 13.5 kgm at 3300 rpm, whereas the torque of the diesel engine is 12.5 kgm at 3000 rpm. Both the variants of Lancer run on five speed manual transmission. 

Cedia Sports

Cedia Sports was launched in India on 1 December in the year 2008. It is launched within a collaboration of Hindustan Motors and Mitsubishi. The all new Cedia sports incorporated superlative performance, sporty styling and luxurious comfort. The car has been equipped with a four cylinder, 16 valve SOHC engine, which offers a displacement of 1999cc.

The maximum power generated by this engine is 114 bhp at 5250 rpm and the maximum torque is 175 Nm at 4250 rpm. The engine of this car runs on a five speed manual transmission. Minimum turning radius of the Cedia is 5.9 m, which is quiet less for a sedan. The maximum climbing capacity of the car is 35.0 degrees, which enables it to climb the high streaks of the mountains.  

Lancer Evolution X

With a collaboration with Mitsubishi Motors, Hindustan Motors developed its long rally heritage, the Lancer Evolution X. This car was powered by a new 4 B11 MIVEC Twin Scroll Turbo Engine. With the help of direct drive and improved emission performance, the light weight engine of Lancer was capable of increasing the maximum torque. This technology enables the engine to achieve the highest output over the full range.

The highest power delivered by the engine is 289.94 bhp at 6500 rpm and the highest torque of the engine is 366 Nm at 3500 rpm. Alloy wheels of the Lancer Evolution X are incorporated with an aluminium compressor and a light weight titanium-aluminium alloy turbine wheel. 


Montero, the mid-size SUV, is highly sophisticated yet aggressive car. The soft leather upholstery understands the human form and delivers a feel of relaxation. Montero is offered with a DOHC 16 valve, in-line, four cylinder, inter-cooled turbocharged, diesel engine, which has a engine displacement of 3200cc.

This engine runs on a five speed automatic transmission with sports mode. Maximum power delivered by this engine is 199.23 bhp at 3800 rpm and the maximum torque of the engine is 441 Nm at 2000 rpm. The fuel tank capacity of Montero is 88 litres, whereas the kerb weight of the car is 2310 kg. Wheelbase of the Montero is 2780mm and the ground clearance is 235mm. 


Mitsubishi Outlander is a multi-utility vehicle, which runs on a 4x4 drive. It has been incorporated with a 2.4 DOHC, 16 valve MPI, MIVEC engine, which provides the engine displacement of 2360cc. Maximum power delivered by the engine of Outlander is 167.67 bhp at 6000 rpm and the maximum torque is 226 Nm at 4100 rpm. The maximum speed of the Outlander is 190 kmph and the minimum turning radius is 5.3m.

Wheelbase of the Outlander is 2670m and the ground clearance is 215mm. The kerb weight of the Outlander is 1615 kg and the gross weight capacity is 2130 kg. This car runs on a six speed manual transmission and six speed paddle shift. It has been equipped with a hydraulic variable power assisted steering.  

Pajero SFX

The Pajero SFX is a dynamic car, which is loaded with advanced features. These features have helped this car emerge as a highly comfortable car, which is also equipped with advance safety features. To mark some changes between the newer and older model of Pajero SFX, the company has increased the approach angle of the new model by one degree.

Moreover, ramp over break angle by 0.5 degree is also increased and most of all, the fatter 265/70 R15 tyres with wider footprints and firmer grip even on wet surfaces. The ground clearance of the new SFX model is 205 mm, which is 15mm more than the older Pajero. Company introduced three additional colour shades like granite, deep purple and limestone for the all new Pajero SFX.    

Discontinued Models

Hindustan Motors in India discontinued some of its models, by launching the upgraded version of that model or by re-launching that model again in some different configuration and design. Some of its discontinued models are Hindustan 10, Hindustan 14, Hindustan Landmaster, Hindustan Ambassador, Hindustan Contessa, Hindustan Pushpak, Hindustan Trekker and Hindustan Porter.

Moreover, Hindustan Motors was also engaged in producing Bedford TJ and Isuzu F series- JCS. These both are truck models and Isuzu F series- JCS is manufactured in Japan but was assembled in India by the Hindustan Motors. From the year 1968, Hindustan Motors in India was engaged in manufacturing Bedford TJ. The production of Bedford TJ was stopped, since it was unable to compete with vehicles of Tata and Ashok Leyland.

Upcoming Cars

Hindustan Motors is working on an 2012 upgrade for its legendary Ambassador model which intends to rival many sedans in its segment.

Hindustan Motors Sales and Service Network

Hindustan Motors increased its exports after the Ambassador found many takers in India. Main export of Hindustan Motors cars was in the British and Japanese markets. The trucks of Hindustan Motors are being exported to countries like Bangladesh, Egypt, New Zealand, Mauritius and Sri Lanka. Hindustan Motors is also engaged in exporting earth moving equipment in the countries like Oman, Jordan, Iraq, Bangladesh, Mauritius and Libya.

The dealer network of Hindustan Motors is backed by a strong dealer network of 115 dealers, 50 service dealers and 60 additional part dealers. Hindustan Motors in India has spread a wide network, which includes 4 regional offices and nation-wide territory offices all across the globe. Two dealers are engaged in offering the Earthmoving Equipment and Power Products market from 25 locations that are spread across the country.

Hindustan Motors Sales Performance

Hindustan Motors posted 12 percent growth in the sales of Ambassador in May 2011. Between the months of April and May 2005, the growth rate was 16 percent with a number of 2012 units over corresponding period in the last year. 

Hindustan Motors Used Car Market

Hindustan Motors has not maintained any of the used car market like Maruti Suzuki (True Value) and Toyota (U-trust). However, cars of Hindustan Motors are available at these used cars organised markets. All the cars are provided with a guarantee of one year or 20000 km. Engines of Hindustan Motors are very rigid and therefore, are highly demanded in the used car market.   

Hindustan Motors Future Plans

Hindustan Motors in India has announced that it will develop an integrated IT Township and Auto Park in 314 acres of land. This township will be specifically identified for this purpose and in accordance with the conditions laid down by the West Bengal government.

Hindustan Motors has finalised an arrangement with Shriram Properties of Bangalore, for the development of their proposed site in Bangalore. Development of the proposed integrated IT Township and Auto Park would be accomplished jointly with Shriram Properties through an SPV.

As a consideration, Hindustan Motors estimates to receive about Rs. 2,950 million in five tranches, which are spread over the next ten quarters and also non-compete fee, which is equal to 4% of sale proceeds. The funds that are generated by these sales will be used by the company for starting a new unit and a revival of the Uttarpara plant, as committed in its application to the government of West Bengal. Basically, the main investments of a company are made on modernisation, expansion and development of contemporary automotive forging, stamping and foundry facilities and growth initiatives at the new production unit.

Hindustan Motors Trivia

The first car, which rolled out from the manufacturing unit of Hindustan Motors was the Landmaster, in 1942. Hindustan Motors was set-up during the World War II in order to produce motor vehicles for the burgeoning Indian middle classes. Landmaster marked the beginning of a long-lasting and fruitful relationship between Morris Motors and Hindustan.

During the early 1950s, Hindustan Motors extended their arrangement with the Morris Motors, by indulging into the production of Morris Motors. In the initial stages, Hindustan Motors was known as Baby Hindustan. During 1957, Morris Motors entered into the production in India and took withdrawal from the UK market. This withdrawal proved to be a mainstay of Hindustan's business and they started production of the cars on their own terms. The new model was named as Ambassador and benchmarked the name of Hindustan Motors
