      About Hindustan Motors

      Summary

      Hindustan Motors in one of the oldest and most respected India based car manufacturing companies. It is an integral part of Birla Technical Services industrial group based in Kolkata, West Bengal. HM was the largest car maker of India before Maruti Udyog stepped in to rule the roads. Apart from all its associations and joint venture products, the Ambassador has been one of its most successful models in India. The car’s design and inspiration was derived from 1956 Morris Oxford Series III and ran over roads for the longest period of 1957-2014.

      Established in 1942 by Mr. B.M. Birla, HM was India’s largest car manufacturer till 1980s. Its iconic product Ambassador car is widely used as taxi cab as government transportation. It commenced its operations in Port Okha in Gujarat and later moved to Uttarpara, West Bengal. General Motors entered in an association with Hindustan Motors for production of various models including Vauxhall Motors, off-road equipment, Allison Transmission, and Bedford Trucks. The two came together again in 1994 for production of Opel Astra cars. In 1999, GM purchased HM’s manufacturing unit located in Halol, Gujarat.

      Hindustan Motors also entered into collaboration with ISUZU for developing engines and transmission boxes for Contessa in late 1980s. These were built at its Pithambur plant near Indore in Madhya Pradesh. The home grown car maker also assembled and traded Isuzu’s F Series - JCS trucks in India in starting of 1990s. Presently, it is assembling Mitusbishi cars at its Thiruvallur Plant in Tamil Nadu. The company is into production of several Mitsubishi cars including Cedia, Lancer, Pajero, Outlander, and Montero.

      Indian Operations And Executive Managements

      Hindustan Motors appointed Mr. Uttam Bose as its Director on 10th May, 2014. He joined the company in year 2012. Its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is Me. Moloy Chowdhary since May, 2014.

      Hindustan Motors owns a manufacturing unit in Uttarapara, West Bengal since 1948. The facility is, at present, rolling out light commercial vehicle 1-tonne payload mini-truck HM Winner and passenger cars. This production facility manufactured the Ambassador (powered by two 1500 & 2000 cc diesel, one 1800 cc petrol and LPG & CNG variants) in the passenger car section. It was the first production facility in India, and is popularly also called as Hind Motor, also produces automotive and forged components. The other manufacturing units of the company are Pithampur, Madhya Prades, Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu and Hosur, Tamil Nadu.

      Hindustan Motors is currently assembling Mitsubishi cars in the Indian car market. The company is also indulged into Earthmoving Equipments, tractors & bulldozers, and engine manufacturing.

      Products And Services

      Car models of Hindustan Motors can be bought from any of its official dealership located in all major cities of India. The counting for its dealerships currently stands at 44 while that for customer touch point extends to 50. All these can be easily located in all major cities of India including Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, etc.

      Environmental Initiatives

      Hindustan Motors is yet to come up with any kind of hybrid or electric vehicles in India. The company recently retracted its top model Ambassador from the market. The car was previously offered in three fuel options: Diesel, Petrol, and CNG. It is expected that Hindustan Motors will release hybrid or electric Mitsubishi car models in India.

      Founder And First Car

      One of the most loved and reckoned automobile maker of India, Hindustan Motors Limited (HML) was the flagship company of C.K. Birla Group. It was founded in the pre-independence era in year 1942 by Mr. B.M. Birla who hailed from the most reputed industrial family of India - the Birlas’. The company commenced its operations from Port Okha in Gujarat with a small assembly plant. Later, in 1948 it moved up to Uttarpara in West Bengal. There it started rolling out its most magnificent model Ambassador car from this plant. There is another manufacturing facility owned by the company in Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu that is run in association with the Japanese car maker Mitsubishi. Hindustan Motors also had several tie-ups with General Motors with whom it produced Allison Transmission gearboxes, off-road equipment, Bedford Trucks, and Vauxhall Motors after independence. The joint venture also led to production of Opel Astra cars in year 1994. Years later in 1999, GM purchased a plant in Halol, Gujarat from HM. HM also used to make earthmovers in the beginning in association with Fermac UK, Caterpillar Inc. and Terex, USA since1984 at the HMEED facility located in Thiruvallur located near Pondicherry and Chennai. The company then entered in a JV with ISUZU for manufacturing engines and gearboxes for Contessa in late1980s. The joint association between HM and Mitsubishi was finalized in papers in year 1998. There are a number of Mitsubishi cars produced in its Thiruvallur plant which includes Pajero, Lancer, Cedia, Outlander, and Montero.

      USP

      Hindustan Motors cars in India are best known as transportation medium and taxi cab in India. Its most talked about model Ambassador was loved for its spacious interiors and sturdy styling. It was discontinued in year 2014.

      Resale Value

      Hindustan Motors retracted its prime model Ambassador from Indian market in year 2014. The vehicle served as politician’s limousine for a long long time. On the flip side, it was also used as a taxi cab across major cities of India. HM models enjoyed a pretty decent resale value in used car market.

      Competition

      Right now, Hindustan Motors is trading only Mitsubishi cars in Indian market which are receiving a stiff competition from Mahindra, Ford, and Tata Motors.
