History

Ford India Private Limited is a fully-owned subsidiary of the American auto giant, Ford Motor Company. Ford is currently the world's sixth largest car manufacturer, but it is slowly gaining good market shares in developing nations including India and Brazil. The company, also, has stakes in Lincoln and Mercury brands. Moreover, the company also owns a small share in Mazda and Aston Martin. JLR was owned by Ford Motor Company, however all the shares were sold to Tata Motors of India in March 2008.

Ford India Private Limited started its India operation in 1926. Due to huge losses, the company shut down its operations in 1954. Ford Motor Company re-entered the Indian market in October 1995, but as Mahindra Ford India Limited. The company had a 50-50 joint venture with Mahindra & Mahindra, but Ford raised its interest to 72 per cent in 1998 and later changed the company's name to Ford India Private Limited.

Indian Operations and Executive Managements

The key person for Ford India Private Limited in India is Nigel Harris, which was appointed President Ford India in February 2014. Previously served as Vice President Sales & Service, Ford Asia Pacific, Harris directly reports to David Schoch, Group VP and President, Asia Pacific. Other key people in Ford Motor India Pvt Ltd. are Anurag Mehrotra, Executive Director, Marketing, Sales & Service and VairamaniPandiyan, Vice President, Human Resources Ford India.

Ford India Private Limited manufacturing facility is situated in Maraimalai Nagar, which is 45km from Chennai. This production unit has a capacity to produce 1.5 lakh cars in two thifts. With the launch of Figo hatchback, the company had invested $500 million to double its capacity to 2 lakh vehicles annually.

Ford India is planning to launch a series of new cars in the country in the next two years. The company has invested $1 billion for a new state-of-the-art manufacturing plant at Sanand, Gujarat. This production unit will have production capacity of 2.7 lakh engines and 2.4 lakh vehicles a year. Now, Ford India has a cumulative production capacity to make 440,000 cars and 610,000 engines annually.

Products & Services

Ford India has a large dealership network in the country. The company has more than 250 dealerships spread across all cities and union territories. Ford India is currently exporting its engine and cars to around 35 countries across the globe. The manufacturer exports more than 40 per cent and 25 per cent of its engine production and car production to over 35 countries, respectively. The company also participated into various activities in Road Safety, Education, Healthcare and Environment. Ford India's initiatives include Driving Skills for Life, Global Week of Caring and Operation Goodwill.

Founder & First Car

Ford Motor Company is an American multinational manufacturer and its headquarters are located in Dearborn, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. Founded by Henry Ford on June 16, 1903, Ford sells automobiles and commercial vehicles under the Ford brand the luxurious cars under the Lincoln brand. Ford also owns the Brazilian SUV maker, Troller and an Australian performance car manufacturer FPV.

In 1908 Ford launched the first engine with a removable cylinder head in the Model T, while in 1927 the manufacturer introduced the Model A. It was also the first car with safety glass in the windshield. Moreover, the manufacturer launched the first low priced V8 engine powered car in 1932.

Environmental Initiatives

Keeping environment on priority, Ford, the American automaker, has introduced various environment friendly technologies. The company has various CNG, electric and hybrid cars in its global lineup. Ford has also introduced flexible fuel vehicles, which are designed to operate smoothly using a wide range of ethanol fuel mixtures- from gasoline to bioethanol-gasoline blends. Ford EcoSport, Fiesta, Focus and Ka are available with Flexi-fuel options for the Brazilian market. Adding to it, the company is also offering various electric hybrid cars and pure electric cars in global markets. The American automaker is yet to launch its electric or hybrid cars in the country, but it is expected that the company could introduce such environment friendly vehicles in near future.

Competition

Ford India is slowly increasing its market share, thanks to its Figo hatch and EcoSport compact SUV. The company is facing stiff competition from the likes of Nissan, Renault and Tata Motors.

Ford Classic

With an aim to improve its market shares, Ford India introduced the Classic, the downsized version of the Fiesta, in 2011. The saloon looks exactly same as the old Fiesta, except for the new badge. It features an aggressive honeycomb grille, pronounced wheel arches, headlights, beefy side panels and alloys, mounted tail lamps and various other styling elements. The interior design and components are borrowed from the Figo hatchback. It’s comfortable and spacious, though the rear seats are little congested.

Ford EcoSport

The EcoSport sub-4 meter SUV, launched in 2013, is one of the most awarded and popular Ford cars in India. With sophisticated urban and premium design, the crossover looks appealing. Ford Endeavour

Launched in 2003, the Endeavour was a volume-generator for Ford in India for a long time. The Ford Fiesta has always been appreciated for its premium styling, frugal engine and driving dynamics. The new-gen model of the vehicle was launched in 2014 in India, and the old model was repositioned as the Classic.
