Established in the year 1929 by Enzo Ferrari, Ferrari S.p.A was initially engaged in sponsoring drivers and manufacturing racing cars. Based at Maranello, Italy, this company later moved on to manufacture street-legal vehicles in 1947. The company was named as Scuderia Ferrari which was later changed to Ferrari S.p.A. Known for its continuous participation in racing; the FerrariCompany has gained immense reputation within a very short period. In the renowned Formula One racing, Ferrari Company cars have gained huge success.
Enzo Ferrari, the founder of FerrariCompany built the Scuderia Ferrari in the year 1929, exclusively for racing purpose. The car competed in 22 events, out of which, it was victorious in eight. In 1940, Enzo Ferrari started a new company by the name of Auto-Avio Costruzioni Ferrari and manufactured Auto-Avio tipo 815, which was the first model. The company successfully acquired planning permission in December 1942 for setting up a plant for manufacturing machine tools. The company shifted its factory to Maranello in the year 1943 and after two years, the FerrariCompany manufactured a unique 12-cylinder engine.
Re-established in the year 1946, the company rolled out first vehicle from this new plant. The year 1949 was crucial as Ferrari won several competitions like Swiss GP, Belgian GP, Italian and European GP. In the year 1968, Ferrari started specialising in three litres sports vehicle prototype class. Enzo Ferrari in 1969 sold 50 percent share capital to famous Fiat group. In the Turin Motor show, the FerrariCompany introduced the flat-12 engine Berlinetta Boxer, which was a huge success.
The Testarossa model was launched by Ferrari in the year 1985, which attained huge sales profit for the company. After the death of Enzo Ferrari, Piero Ferrari was appointed as the new vice chairman on 14th August 1988. However, the Luca di Montezemolo took the responsibility as the new chairman of the company in the year 1991. Michael Schumacher, the renowned racing driver earned reputation for the company in seven F1 championships. Amedeo Felisa was appointed as the new CEO of the company in the year 2008 and 95 percent share of the company was acquired by Fiat Group in the same year. Collaboration was made between Ferrari Company and the Italian National Olympic Committee in the year 2007. Federica Marchionni took the responsibility as the brand director of Ferrari in the year 2011. Till date, the company has launched many cars, which are acclaimed by car lovers across the globe.
The founder of Ferrari, Enzo Ferrari was born on 18 February, 1898. Since his childhood, he accompanied his father in automobile races in Bologna. He was extremely interested in racing activities, since he was 10 years and decided to become a racing driver. Enzo Ferrari started his career as a mechanic and in 1923; he joined the Alfa Romeo racing team. In 1938, he was appointed as the head of the motor racing department. After starting the Ferrari S.p.A company, he manufactured several sports cars. The 1947 125 S was the first Ferrari road car, which was loaded with a 1.5 L V12 engine. The launch of the Ferrari F40 took place just before the death of Enzo Ferrari in the year 1988. This FerrariCompany car is still known to be one of the best super cars of the world.
Ferrari Company in India
Ferrari officially entered the Indian market in the mid 2011 with its popular models 599GTB Fiorano, California, 458 Italia and FF. According to Ferrari SpA Chief Executive Officer Amedeo Felisa, India is the 58th country where the company has started its operation. In next 2-3 years, the Ferrari Company in India expects to sell more than 100 cars. Price of Ferrari cars range from Rs. 2.2 crores to Rs. 3.41 crores. Ferrari California is the low priced model among all Ferrari models in India.
After making tour of the country in 2007 and 2008, the company decided to foray into India. With a team of marketing experts, Mr. Felisa travelled across many Indian states for a total of 11,000 kilometres. To test the India road conditions for Ferrari Company cars, the trip was made. By this trip, the team also gathered the response of Indian customers regarding Ferrari Company cars. The company established partnership with Mumbai based Shreyans Group to import Ferrari cars in India.
Ferrari Manufacturing Facilities
In India, Ferrari does not have any manufacturing facilities. The company has not disclosed anything about setting up any production plant in India. However, Mumbai based Shreyans Group is appointed as the official importer of Ferrari Company cars. The company opened its dealership at Mumbai by the name of National garage and another dealership is set up in the nation’s capital New Delhi.
Ferrari Vehicle Models
Ferrari, the renowned car maker has seven models out of which four are introduced in India. The company has attracted the customers from various corners of the globe by its luxury models.
Ferrari Company in Indiahas introduced Ferrari 458 Italia, Ferrari FF, Ferrari California, and Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano. Ferrari Sales Performance
Ferrari has established its foot hold in the markets of Hong Kong, China and Taiwan, since 2004. In 2010, the company sold 6,500 cars globally and expects better sales in the years ahead. For India, Ferrari Company has set the sales target of 100 cars and expects to achieve it within next three years. However, as per company officials, Ferrari has no priority to attain great sales volume in the country in the initial stages.
Ferrari Used Car Market
Since all Ferrari Company cars are quite new in the Indian market, it is hard to find an used model. However, the company has a pre-owned certification programme by the name of Ferrari Approved. A series of warranties and controls are included in this programme by Maranello. This programme of Ferrari Company includes maintenance and proven history verification, complete technical inspection by the company’s technicians and interior and exterior pre-sales preparation. In Europe, Ferrari Warranty of up to 24 months is offered and for rest of the world, up to 12 moths warranty is provided. Further, Ferrari roadside assistance for up to 24 months is offered in Europe but for rest of the world, it’s up to 12 months.
Ferrari Future Plans
Ferrari has introduced four models in India. The company expects to launch the 458 Spider and the 599 GTO in India in the near future. As per as sales is concerned, Ferrari Company expects to sell around 100 cars in the next three years.
In the year 1947, Ferrari won Roman GP, Arcangeli Cup and Turin GP. A year after, Ferrari Company won Mille Miglia, Summer GP, 12 Hourse of Paris and Targa Florio/Sicily Tour.
Using the Dino, powerful 1.5-liter v-6 race car, Phil Hill won the Formula One Championship in 1961.
Enzo Ferrari dedicated this car to his son Enzo Ferrari, who died due to muscular dystrophy at the age of 24.
Fiat group acquired 50 percent share capital of Ferrai in the year 1969.
With the Berlinetta Boxer in 1973, Ferrari entered the mid-engined 12-cylinder fray.
In 1995, Ferrari Company launched the F50 as a mark of 50th anniversary. This two seater car was two-door and had a removable hardtop.
In the 976 Ferrari 400GT, for the first time, the automatic transmission was introduced by the company.
Ninety five percent of the Ferrari Company share was owned by Fiat group in the year 2008.
