Toyota’s premium line sedan Camry helped the Japanese car major attain a niche class in the Indian car market. It was launched internationally in 1982 and since then seen many generations throughout its tenure in all markets. In India, it competes mainly against the Skoda Superb as cars like Honda Accord and Volkswagen Passat are up for their new generation makeovers in coming months. The Camry didn’t have a great start in domestic market cause of lack of a diesel motor. Toyota worked on this crisis by developing a hybrid motor, similar arrangement as seen on the iconic Prius. This helped better sales to the extent that more hybrids were sold compared to the conventional offering. Posing a serious threat to the Camry is the new generation Skoda Superb. Brand new design and revised interiors with upmarket interiors totally make the Superb an irresistible offering. We take a look at both these sedans to know which one of the two makes it to the best list.

Exterior and Interior Design: Toyota Camry Vs Skoda Superb

It is clearly the Skoda Superb, which stands out distinctly in terms of exterior design as its lines and contours are very premium. The new gen model wasn’t given a complete overhaul but a minor change to make it look crisper than before. The new Superb looks as majestic as the previous gen model except for this one, Skoda has gone ahead to make it look more futuristic. The company adopted a new design language to make the design cleaner, precise and crystalline. It is the front face which has edgy additions and the more Audiish rear profile, helping it attain a certain level of sophistication.

The Camry has odd bits in the design making it look like none and at the same time look attractive and unique. Much like the international offering, the new Camry, which was launched in India few months back, sports multiple modern elements. There is a more aggressive face with generous chrome bands joining the headlamps. The large open mouth radiator grille also looks impressive with brand new fog lamp housings. The rear too gets more solid contours with newer tail lamps and muscular rear bumper.

Inside the new Superb, the rear seat is the place to be with soft beige leather upholstery and every other control and function available just at the touch of a button mounted on the rear armrest. Leather seats, fine stitch quality, great trims and spacious feeling make it a very pampering experience. To make it more convenient, the rear armrest has foldable cup holders. The rear boot space is enormous. It can take a gold kit and two guitars very easily. The boot lid opens in two ways. It has 565L of space and 1700L with rear folded seats. The interiors of the New Camry haven’t received much of an update but still manage to hold ground against the Superb. It gets a modern binnacle with a central information screen which shows the drive mode with an energy monitor, driving style indicator with realistic fuel consumption and other vehicle settings.

Performance: Toyota Camry Vs Skoda Superb

Powering the more efficient and cleaner Toyota Camry is a 2.5L gasoline motor making 160 PS of power at 5700 rpm and 213 Nm of torque at 4500 rpm. The electric motor combined with the petrol engine raises the power output to 205 PS. It also comes with an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission which makes sure the shifts are smooth along with reduced fuel consumption. Lesser on displacement Skoda Superb employs a four cylinder 1968cc 16V turbocharged DOHC engine. This engine produces 140 PS of power at 4200 rpm which is less than its petrol variant. However, this diesel motor produces 320Nm of torque between 1750 to 2500 rpm. It comes in a 6 Speed DSG gearbox which also has an optional manual gear changing.

For the ones who want to leave a smaller carbon footprint and also wish to have a luxury liner on wheels with a great mileage, the Camry should do just fine.
