American carmaker Chevrolet, owned by General Motors, was ordered to pay its French dealers nearly eight million Euros (USD 8.5 million) in compensation by a Paris court for the "brutal" withdrawal of its brand from Europe. Seventeen dealers had sued the company, part of the US General Motors giant, for not respecting a notice period it was obliged to give them after GM announced in December 2013 that it was withdrawing Chevrolet from sale in 2015 due to poor sales. Chevrolet ordered to pay 8 Mn Euros by Paris court as compensation to French dealers They had claimed damages of 33 million euros, after alleging that Chevrolet France had put pressure on dealerships who did not accept their initial offer of compensation by withdrawing marketing material and delaying delivery so they were left with no cars to sell.

General Motors India Private Limited has been conducting its business in Indian market in partnership with SAIC. In this partnership, 93 per cent stake is handled by General Motors while the rest 7 percent goes to SAIC. Currently, General Motors is marketing and distributing its products in Indian market under the badge of Chevrolet. The company started its operations in Indian market in year 1928 by assembling Chevrolet trucks, buses, and cars. Later in 1954, these assembling operations took a set back and were closed down. Post this, General Motors entered in a partnership with Hindustan Motors and began developing Vauxhall cars, Bed for trucks, Allision Transmissions, and off-road equipment.

In 1994, General Motors India entered in a joint venture with Hindustan Motors for manufacturing and selling Opel vehicles. By end of this decade, GM was able to purchase all stakes in Hindustan Motors and continued with Opel cars production till 2003 at its Halol facility. It was after this when company started with production of Chevrolet vehicles. GMIPL has now opened its technical center in Bangalore, Karnataka where all its vehicle engineering, research & development activities takes place. In2006, the American manufacturer began working over its second vehicle manufacturing place in Talegaon where only Chevrolet vehicles are manufactured.

Executive Management

General Motors recently appointed Arvind Saxena as its new President & Managing Director for its Indian operations.  Arvind was previously responsible for taking care of Volkswagen Sales Group India, now handles GM’s Indian operations. He replaced Lowell Paddock in the company, who is now Vece President of Planning & Programme Management for General Motors International Operations.

Indian Operations

General Motors was one of the first foreign auto maker to open an assembly unit in India. The company commenced its operations in 1928 along wth National Series AB Touring. Chevrolet Sales India Privaet Limited began its vehicle production operations in Indian at its Halol and Talegaon Dabhade facility located in Gujarat and Maharashtra, respectively. Chevrolet’s headquarters are located in Gurgaon and Halol while its technical center is established in Bangalore. The two production units located in Gujarat and Maharashtra carry a potential to produce 3, 85, 000 units of vehicles annually.

Product & Services

General Motors India Private Limited holds a huge dealership network distributed across the nation. At present, the company holds around 270 Service Outlets and 248 Sales Points. These outlets and points cover all kind of tier 1 and tier 2 cities in almost all states. The dealerships are known for offering 3S facilities that include sales, services, and spare parts. General Motors is also known for providing services and parts to third party vehicle manufacturers under another brand name -AC Delco.

Environmental Initiatives

General Motors India is yet to introduce CNG, hybrid, and electric Chevrolet cars in the country. However, keeping in view the changing dynamics of market, the American carmaker is working over improving efficiency and reducing emissions from its power mills.

Founder And First Car

Ousted GM founder William C. Durant and Louis Chevrolet laid foundations of Chevrolet Motors on 8th November, 1911. It was later acquired by General Motors in 1917. It was Etienne Planche who designed its costliest car Series C Classis Six who was a close friend of Louis Chevrolet. The first C prototype was developed even before Chevrolet was incorporated as a brand.

With the advent of time, China grew up to be its third largest market in the world and the company then decided to extend its foot prints in other Asian markets. In India, Chevrolet entered in year 2003 with its latest model Optra. Later, the brand moved on with introduction of Tavera MOV which went on to register huge response from Indian car buyers.

USP

Chevrolet cars are mainly known for offering higher fuel efficiency at pocket friendly prices. The two most popular Chevrolet cars in India are its twin hatchbacks - Beat and Sail. Cruze and Captive, on the flip side, are popular among premium car buyers. Its main USP lies in its prices which are kept on a competitive note due to local manufacturing. The maintenance cost of these cars is also low due tolocal availability of its parts. Though almost all the Chevrolet cars are known for offering high mileage, the most fuel efficient Chevrolet Cars are - Beat, Sail and Sail Hatchback.

Resale Value

Chevrolet cars enjoy a decent resale value in Indian used car market. Its lower maintenance cost, local availability of local parts, and higher fuel efficacy are some of the common reasons for its popularity. With respect to its product lineup, it is Cruze and Beat that enjoy highest level of admiration.

Competition

Despite all its USPs, Chevrolet is still struggling to enhance its market share in India. to achieve this target, it plans to launch a completely new range of models in near future. Its closest competitors are Fiat, Nissan, Renault, and Ford.

The Chevrolet Beat, launched in 2009, received its first facelift in 2014 with minor exterior and interior changes. The Beat is one of the most popular Chevrolet cars in India, which is known as the Spark in international markets. The new model looks similar to its predecessor, though, it gets dual port chrome grille, modified bumpers, new headlamps, fog lamps with chrome lined contrasting black surround and few more changes. The interior, too, doesn’t receive any significant updates, except for dashboard with silver inserts, steering mounted audio controls and manually adjustable air conditioning.

First launched in 2008, the Chevrolet Captiva SUV has always been appreciated for its practicality and engine performance. Launched in 2013, the Chevrolet Sail sedan replaced the ageing Aveo in India. The saloon received positive feedback initially, but its sale started dropping due to rising competition in the segment. With an aim to boost its sales, General Motors introduced the facelift model in 2014 with minor exterior and interior updates. However, there were no changes made to both the engines - 84.8bhp, 1.2-litre petrol and 76.9bhp, 1.3-litre diesel.

The Chevrolet Sail hatchback, launched in 2010, received its first minor facelift in 2014. The updated model received some exterior and interior changes, but still looks very similar to the old model. On the exterior, the hatchback features new headlamps, chromed fog lamps, new alloys design, blacked out B-pillar, new tail lamp and modified boot lip with a chromed strip. The interior, too, received minor changes.
