Indian subsidiary of German auto maker Volkswagen AG is ready to commence production of the Polo in India. It will be the hatchback model of VW Polo that goes into production from December 12 2009 at its Chakan plant near Pune. This first local car from VW will be displayed at the Delhi Auto Expo 2010 later in January. It will be available in the showrooms by March 2010. Initially Volkswagen will launch the hatchback model but later a sedan model will also hit the Indian roads.

The fifth generation Volkswagen Polo is one of the best selling cars around the world. “The Polo’s selection as Car of the Year 2010 by 59 jurors from 23 European countries is the crowning achievement of an extraordinary year for the new Polo,” Kurt Rippholz, head of communication, Volkswagen group, said in a telephonic chat from Germany. Polo beat Toyota iQ, Opel Astra, Skoda Yeti and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. He was also upbeat about the Indian car market as he expects nearly 1.3 million cars to be sold next year.

Volkswagen will launch Beetle today in India. It had already begun booking for the car earlier and has already received 160 bookings for its premium small car model in India.
