Unrest at Hyundai Plant in Chennai

01 December, 2009, 10:10 IST by Satish Kalepu

Hyundai Motors has been facing labour problems since a long time in South India. Now a fresh blow comes as workers go the third strike in last nine months. Workers are now demanding government intervention to solve their problems stating that they would go on tool-down agitation if their demands were not looked after.

"We have given a notice...If we don't get any positive action from Hyundai management or from the labour department, we will fix the date for going ahead with a strike after December 5," CITU state general secretary A Soundararajan said.

Hyundai Motors India Limited has been facing labour problems since a long time and government had assured proper steps to resolve the issues. Hyundai had also decided to move its production facility partially outside India looking at the grim situation and constant problems at its Indian production facility.

The company had signed an MoU in July with the workers to re-instate 80 dismissed workers. Now the workers allege that only 20 have been re-instated so far. Hyundai has asked the labour department to look into the matter as well. The union also asserts that not only remaining 60 employees should be reinstated but its 1200 workers should be ‘recognized’ as well.
