Toyota Kirloskar Motors stated that it will commence production of its small car Etios in December this year. Toyota’s second plant is already under construction and it will be ready to begin production by the end of this year. The second plant will have annual production capacity of 70,000 units annually which will further increase to 2,00,000 units in different phases.
Toyota Etios will be built on an all-new platform from Toyota and will be available as hatchback and sedan model styles in the country. The car will be priced around Rs. 5 lakh and will compete with models like Maruti Swift.
"I visited many Indian cities and homes to learn the market and to hear from the consumer directly. Over four years, more than 2,000 engineers have been involved in the development of the Etios, and each has devoted his or her best effort with no compromises. I am convinced in my heart that the Etios offers joy of ownership and quality of life to consumers in India," said Yoshinori Noritake, Toyota Etios Chief Engineer.
The small car model will be available with two engine options - 1.2L and a 1.5L DOHC gasoline engines. Currently Toyota does not have any plans to introduce to introduce diesel option but may do so at a later stage looking at the market response to the model.
Toyota said it will also sell the Etios in Russia and South America. Sales are targeted at 70,000 units for India in the first year.
