Toyota Planning Prius Recall, India Launch Remains Unaffected
Toyota problems are very much evident now. The company is now planning to recall 3000 models of its hybrid car Prius that seem to experience braking problems. The company has been reeling under safety woes that have turned from a snowball into an avalanche. Prius is one of the most favorite cars of Hollywood and environmentalists alike.
"The company has notified its dealers in Japan that it would recall all the (new model Prius) vehicles sold in the country," a mass-circulation newspaper said, without giving a source. "The company will also repair the software free of charge in the United States and other countries in a similar manner," said The Yomiuri Shimbun, Japanese newspaper. The repairs will include upgrading the anti-lock braking system software problem that seem to have caused the trouble. Toyota will recall early this week at least 311,000 units of its 2010 Prius gas-electric hybrid to fix its braking system, a person familiar with the matter added The Sunday, an American publication.
The manufacturing units in the US have once again started manufacturing eight Toyota models that were involved in safety recall. The work was halted for about a week but the US and Canadian plants resumed production this week.
On the other hand, Toyota Kirloskar Motors stated that the company remains undeterred to bring Toyota Prius to Indian shores. Its original plans to launch the car in Indian market remain intact. "Our plans remain absolutely unchanged. Bookings had started by January and the vehicles will be delivered by March-end or April beginning," said an official of Toyota Kirloskar Motors (TKM) -- the Indian joint venture between Toyota Motor Corporation and the Kirloskar Group.
TKM has already received 54 booking for the car from Indian customers.
